There is no universal top ten for motorcycle modifications: the right choices depend on your bike, how you ride, and local requirements. Tires, suspension, brakes, luggage, exhaust and lighting can all affect how a motorcycle performs or is equipped, so treat each as a conditional option—not an automatic improvement. Rider protective gear belongs on the same practical checklist, even though it is not a bike modification.
How to choose a motorcycle modification
Start with a need—such as carrying luggage or addressing a handling concern—then confirm compatibility with your motorcycle’s make, model and year. Consider installation, maintenance, load limits and any effect on required equipment. The National Agenda for Motorcycle Safety, published in 2000, says suspension, tire and brake upgrades can be beneficial, while other modifications can be detrimental. 10 options to consider
1. Tires matched to your bike and riding
Tires are a foundational choice because size and type need to suit the motorcycle and intended use. No specific tire model is established here as best for an unspecified bike. NHTSA recommends checking pressure and tread depth before every ride; a tire change does not remove the need for those checks. The National Agenda describes tire upgrades as potentially beneficial, not universally so. See NHTSA motorcycle safety guidance.
2. Suspension suited to rider and load
Suspension changes may be relevant to handling or carrying additional weight, but compatibility and calibration depend on the motorcycle and rider. For cargo, NHTSA advises that suspension and tire pressure may need adjustment to account for the extra load. Follow the motorcycle maker’s instructions rather than assuming an aftermarket component is an improvement.

3. Brake components selected for compatibility
The National Agenda identifies brake-component upgrades as another change that can be beneficial. That does not establish that an aftermarket part will shorten stopping distance or improve safety on every motorcycle. Confirm fitment and installation requirements, and keep checking the hand and foot brakes before riding.
4. A rack or luggage system—with load planning
Luggage can make it easier to carry gear, but added weight and poor balance can affect the motorcycle. Secure cargo, distribute it evenly, and observe the bike’s load limits. NHTSA notes that extra cargo may call for suspension and tire-pressure adjustments; rear luggage can also encourage overloading.

5. Exhaust changes, approached cautiously
Exhaust modifications are not an automatic performance or safety upgrade. The National Agenda reports that street motorcycles with modified exhaust systems were over-represented in crashes in the historical Hurt Report. That association does not prove that every modified exhaust causes a crash, and it does not establish a particular system’s performance, noise level or legality. Check the rules that apply where you ride before changing the exhaust.
6. Lighting that preserves required equipment
Improving visibility may be a goal, but an accessory must not make required lighting or other safety equipment inoperative. A 2010 NHTSA interpretation discusses red, amber and white colors for original required lighting and federal requirements for equipment installation; it is not a complete guide to state or local law. Check current rules in your jurisdiction and confirm that the particular accessory is compatible. NHTSA’s motorcycle guidance also includes checking headlights and signal indicators before riding.

7. A properly fitting, compliant helmet
A helmet is rider equipment rather than a motorcycle modification, but it is a core part of preparing for the road. NHTSA advises choosing a helmet with the DOT symbol that meets FMVSS 218 and fits snugly. Do not alter the interior: changes can compromise the helmet’s integrity. 8. Gloves
NHTSA includes gloves in its recommended protective gear. Choose gear intended for motorcycle riding and suitable to your needs; the available guidance does not establish a particular glove model or feature as best.

9. Protective clothing
NHTSA recommends protective clothing as part of motorcycle riding gear. This is a safety-equipment choice, not a bike mod, and the cited guidance does not rank specific garments or brands.
10. Footwear that covers the ankles
NHTSA also recommends footwear covering the ankles. Treat it as part of the rider’s protective equipment rather than an accessory to the motorcycle.

Check the bike before every ride
NHTSA’s practical pre-ride checklist is direct: “Before every ride, check your motorcycle’s tire pressure and tread depth, hand and foot brakes, headlights and signal indicators, and fluid levels.” Use the motorcycle maker’s service and fitment instructions alongside that checklist; a modification does not replace routine inspection.

- When carrying cargo, secure and balance it, stay within the motorcycle’s limits, and account for its effect on suspension and tire pressure.
What depends on your motorcycle and location
Exact tire sizes, suspension settings, component fitment and legal requirements cannot be specified without the motorcycle’s make, model, year and the rider’s jurisdiction. The lighting interpretation cited above is from 2010 and addresses federal requirements, not every current local rule. Verify fitment with the motorcycle maker’s documentation and check applicable rules before installing changes that affect required equipment.
