Reuters reported on April 6, 2025, citing Nikkei, that Toyota aimed to develop about 15 in-house EV models by 2027 and produce about one million vehicles a year by then. Reuters said Toyota declined to comment and had not announced the information. The reported million is an annual production figure—not a sales target or cumulative total.
What Toyota reportedly plans—and what it has confirmed
The figures trace to a Nikkei report relayed by Reuters. The report described an ambition for about 15 in-house EV models, some including Lexus, and annual production of about one million vehicles by 2027. Toyota did not confirm the plan to Reuters. A separate figure in Toyota’s public battery announcement was a 2026 lineup standard of 1.5 million units. Reuters also described Toyota’s earlier 1.5 million annual EV sales figure for 2026 and 3.5 million for 2030 as benchmarks for shareholders, rather than targets. What Toyota’s battery roadmap says
Toyota’s 2023 roadmap set out several development tracks, each with planned timing and company-stated goals. They are not guarantees that a technology will reach production on schedule or deliver the stated results in customer vehicles.

These are Toyota’s development aims, not independently verified range, cost or charging results. In particular, the 1,000 km projection includes efficiency measures such as aerodynamics and weight reduction; it is not an independently established real-world driving range. Regional announcements show different parts of the roadmap
Europe: six new BEVs planned for announcement
Toyota Europe said in 2025 that it intended to reveal six new BEV models by the end of 2026, expanding across core SUV segments. Its announcement identified the bZ4X, Urban Cruiser and C-HR+. The six-model ambition is specific to Europe and should not be added to U.S. lineup counts as if both described one global range. United States: the 2027 bZ and its stated range estimates
In an August 4, 2026 announcement, Toyota described the 2027 bZ as one of three BEV models in its U.S. electrified lineup at that time, alongside 15 hybrids and two plug-in hybrids. The 2027 bZ was listed in XLE and Limited grades with front- or all-wheel drive. Toyota’s manufacturer-estimated range figures included 314 miles for the XLE FWD Plus with a 74.7-kWh battery and 236 miles for the XLE FWD with a 57.7-kWh battery. The 2027 bZ has a North American Charging System (NACS) port and supports Level 1 and Level 2 charging. Toyota says it includes a dual-voltage charging cable and an adapter kit for SAE J1772 and CCS stations. A separate charger is therefore not automatically necessary for every buyer; check the vehicle’s included equipment, charging connector and household electrical setup before purchasing charging hardware. China’s Lexus venture is separate from the global production report
Toyota announced a new Shanghai venture in February 2025 to develop and produce Lexus BEVs. The Associated Press reported that production was planned to begin in 2027, with initial capacity of about 100,000 vehicles a year. That is a separate China investment announcement; it does not confirm the Nikkei-reported figure of about one million vehicles in annual production across Toyota’s broader plans. How to read the 2027 headline
- About 15 models: a reported in-house EV development ambition, including some Lexus models—not a confirmed, published global model list.
- About one million: reported annual production by 2027, not annual sales or cumulative output; Toyota did not confirm the information to Reuters.
- Other Toyota figures: the 2026 lineup standard, shareholder benchmarks, Europe’s six-model ambition, the U.S. bZ lineup and the Shanghai venture refer to distinct measures, regions or announcements.
- Battery figures: range, cost and charging numbers are company development goals whose outcomes should not be assumed from the planned dates alone.
