“All in one” describes Toyota’s multi-pathway Hilux range, not a single pickup combining diesel, battery-electric and hydrogen systems. Toyota’s announced lineup separates those choices by variant and market: a 2.8-litre 48V diesel mild hybrid and a battery-electric Hilux are covered in Toyota Europe’s 2026 overview, while a hydrogen fuel-cell Hilux (FCEV) is planned for Europe and Oceania from 2028. Eastern European markets are also listed for conventional diesel and petrol engines.
What Toyota is actually offering
Toyota says the Hilux has passed 27 million cumulative sales, a manufacturer-reported figure in its 2026 model introduction. The new strategy is to keep different propulsion technologies in the same model family rather than force every buyer into one system.

Is the new Hilux electric?
Yes, Toyota has announced a battery-electric Hilux. The European version uses a 59.2 kWh battery, front and rear eAxles and permanent all-wheel drive. Toyota Europe quotes up to 257 km of WLTP combined range and up to 380 km on the WLTP city cycle.

Those are not interchangeable figures. The city-cycle result represents a less demanding test phase; combined WLTP is the relevant headline figure for mixed driving. Toyota’s first Thai prototype announcement instead described the same-size 59.2 kWh battery and a development target of 300 km or more in NEDC mode. NEDC and WLTP results should not be compared as if they were the same test.

Electric Hilux charging
- AC: Toyota Europe says 10–100% takes around 6.5 hours at up to 10 kW, using a suitable domestic or public wallbox.
- DC: Toyota quotes about 30 minutes for 10–80% at a 125 kW or higher charger, subject to temperature, battery state, charger capability and other conditions.
Installation and connector requirements depend on the national model and electrical supply, so a wallbox should be specified with a Toyota dealer or qualified installer for the exact vehicle.
Electric payload, towing and off-road figures
Toyota Europe lists 710–715 kg of BEV payload and towing of up to 1,600 kg. It reports 212 mm ground clearance and 700 mm wading capability for the BEV. Those figures make it a useful electric work and recreational pickup, but its rated towing capacity is materially below the diesel mild hybrid’s 3,500 kg maximum.

What the 48V diesel mild hybrid does differently
The 48V system combines a 2.8-litre diesel engine, an electric motor-generator, a 48V lithium-ion battery beneath the rear seats and a DC-DC converter. It is a mild hybrid, not a plug-in hybrid: the battery is charged by the vehicle’s system rather than by an external charging session.
For the European 48V model, Toyota reports 9.7–10.0 l/100 km fuel consumption and 254–262 g/km CO2 on the WLTP combined cycle. Toyota also lists 204 DIN hp (150 kW), 500 Nm, payload above 1,000 kg and up to 3,500 kg braked towing.

The diesel’s greater payload and towing ratings suit heavier trailers, construction equipment and sustained remote work. Toyota Europe gives it 309 mm ground clearance and 700 mm wading capability. Fuel availability and the ability to refuel quickly remain practical advantages where charging infrastructure is sparse.

Is Toyota making a hydrogen Hilux?
Yes, but it is a future program rather than a current retail specification. Toyota plans to introduce a Hilux FCEV in Europe and Oceania from 2028. Toyota Australia vice president Sean Hanley said that including an FCEV “reinforces this multi-pathway approach” and reflects Toyota’s commitment to hydrogen fuel-cell electric technology.

The announcements do not give a final sale month, driving range, hydrogen-tank capacity, power output, price, production volume or infrastructure requirements. The 2028 plan therefore confirms Toyota’s direction, not a hydrogen Hilux that buyers can order today.

- Hydrogen: Europe and Oceania are planned from 2028; this is not evidence of current retail availability.
Which Hilux variant fits your work?
Choose the 48V diesel when towing and payload come first
The diesel mild hybrid is the stronger match for loads above one tonne, trailers up to 3,500 kg and routes where public high-power charging is limited.

Choose the BEV for shorter, predictable-duty cycles
The electric Hilux makes most sense when a 257 km WLTP combined maximum covers the daily route and overnight or depot charging is available. Its lower payload and towing ratings need to be checked against the trailer and cargo actually used.
Wait for verified FCEV details if hydrogen is the priority
The FCEV is a 2028-oriented option. Until Toyota publishes production specifications and local refuelling information, it cannot be evaluated like the diesel and BEV variants.
What is still unknown
- National prices, trim levels, equipment and confirmed delivery dates.
- Final FCEV range, storage, output, payload, towing, price and production volume.
- Real-world range under towing, cold weather, payload and off-road conditions; the cited material contains no independent comparative road test.
Check the relevant national Toyota newsroom and dealer before relying on availability, pricing or order timing, because the rollout is market-specific.
