Toyota unveiled the GR GT on December 5, 2025, as an under-development prototype and a new flagship in the footsteps of the Toyota 2000GT and Lexus LFA. That is a story of inherited ambition and car-making craft—not a confirmed claim that the GR GT is a direct successor or shares either car’s platform. Toyota’s announced target is to launch the GR GT and its race-car counterpart around 2027; the date is not a confirmed on-sale schedule.
Is the GR GT a successor to the 2000GT or Lexus LFA?
Not in the literal model-line sense established by Toyota’s announcement. Toyota positions the GR GT and GR GT3 as flagships “in the footsteps of the Toyota 2000GT of yesteryear and the Lexus LFA,” connecting them through a stated effort to preserve and pass on car-making skills. The company has not described the GR GT as a direct successor, nor do the cited materials establish shared platforms or other technical lineage.
The connection is instead one of heritage and development culture. Toyota says experienced LFA developers passed skills and techniques to younger team members. Its premiere presentation also invokes test driver Hiromu Naruse’s experience, linking the 2000GT and LFA with the next generation of drivers and development work.
The historical timeline helps explain the names Toyota chose: the company’s chart lists the first-generation 2000GT from May 1967 through October 1970, and the Lexus LFA beginning in October 2009. Those dates are historical reference points, not proof of an uninterrupted product line.

What powertrain and engineering approach did Toyota announce?
The road-going GR GT is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive hybrid. Toyota announced a newly developed 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 paired with a single electric motor, with power sent through a rear transaxle and a newly developed eight-speed automatic transmission.
Toyota’s three stated engineering aims are a low center of gravity, low weight with high rigidity, and aerodynamic performance. The announced prototype configuration includes a two-seat cabin, an all-aluminum body frame, carbon-ceramic brakes, and 20-inch tires: 265/35ZR20 at the front and 325/30ZR20 at the rear.

What are the GR GT’s announced performance targets?
These are Toyota’s December 5, 2025 prototype development targets and in-house measurements—not final production specifications or independently tested results. Toyota said details could change without notice.
| Item | Toyota’s prototype target or stated configuration |
|---|---|
| System output | 650 PS or greater |
| System torque | 850 Nm or greater |
| Vehicle weight | 1,750 kg or lower |
| Top speed | 320 km/h or greater |
| Dimensions | 4,820 mm long, 2,000 mm wide, 1,195 mm high |
| Wheelbase | 2,725 mm |
| Weight distribution | 45:55 front to rear |

Because the car was still under development when Toyota released those figures, they should be read as goals rather than promises about a production car’s final output, weight, speed, or dimensions.

How does the GR GT3 differ from the road car?
The GR GT3 is a separate, competition-oriented car based on the GR GT and built to FIA GT3 specifications. Toyota describes it as a car for customers who want to race and win. Its announcement identifies the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 family, but does not establish that the GR GT3 uses the road car’s hybrid system; the road-car powertrain details should not be applied to the racer without confirmation.
Toyota characterized the road GR GT as “a road-legal race car.” Operating Officer and Chief Branding Officer Simon Humphries described its intended dual character at the premiere: “This is a circuit-ready, everyday driver—wild on a track day, easy to drive around town.” These are Toyota’s descriptions of the project, not independent assessments of a finished production car.
