Toyota’s ENGINE ReBORN program is developing compact combustion engines to work with electrified powertrains. Toyota’s announcement includes 1.5-liter naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines and a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. In a Toyota hybrid, an engine can also drive a generator that supplies electricity to the traction motor or charges the battery—but Toyota has not established that the new engines are standalone generators or named them for a production vehicle.
What Toyota announced with ENGINE ReBORN
Toyota’s Integrated Report 2025 describes ENGINE ReBORN as engine development conceived for electrified vehicles. The concepts comprise three configurations:
- 1.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-four
- 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four
- 2.0-liter turbocharged engine
Toyota says the naturally aspirated 1.5-liter reduces volume and height by 10% compared with its current 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine. That is Toyota’s reported comparison, not an independently measured result. The compact packaging is intended to make the engines easier to integrate into electrified vehicles.
The announcement is about engines within a broader powertrain, not a separate engine-generator product. Toyota says the engine and electric motor can be managed together, so the engine does not have to cover every driving condition by itself. The company also describes using motor signals to estimate combustion status and adjust fuel injection and motor assistance. Those are stated development aims; Toyota has not published independent fuel-economy, emissions, or performance results for these engine concepts.

How a Toyota hybrid engine can generate electricity
In Toyota’s explanation of its hybrid system, the engine’s power can be split: some turns the wheels, while some drives an electric generator. The generator’s electricity can power the traction motor or charge the battery. The traction motor can also help propel the car, so saying that an engine “generates electricity” describes one possible role in a hybrid powertrain—not that the engine alone supplies all propulsion or electrical power.
Toyota’s hybrid-system overview explains this arrangement. It should not be taken as evidence that the ENGINE ReBORN concepts have already been fitted to a production hybrid.

How the announced engines compare
| Concept | Displacement | Aspiration | Published performance result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5-liter naturally aspirated | 1.5 L | Naturally aspirated | Not stated for ENGINE ReBORN in Toyota’s Integrated Report 2025 |
| 1.5-liter turbocharged | 1.5 L | Turbocharged | Not stated for ENGINE ReBORN in Toyota’s Integrated Report 2025 |
| 2.0-liter turbocharged | 2.0 L | Turbocharged | Not stated for ENGINE ReBORN in Toyota’s Integrated Report 2025 |
The listed configurations are development concepts, not confirmed production versions available to compare in vehicles. Toyota’s report does not provide comparable output, fuel-consumption, or emissions figures for them.
A current Toyota hybrid is an illustration, not an application of these engines
Toyota’s 2026 RAV4 Hybrid announcement describes a production system with a 2.5-liter inline-four engine, two motor-generators, and a traction battery. It offers a current example of an engine working with motor-generators, but it is not identified as using any ENGINE ReBORN engine.

When will the new engines reach production?
A production date and named vehicle application have not been established in the cited material. Associated Press coverage of Toyota’s May 2024 presentation reported that the company had not disclosed when the engines would reach market. Toyota chief executive Koji Sato described the engine as “optimized for the electrification era,” but that description is not a launch announcement.
Until Toyota names a production model or gives an availability date, the appropriate description is a development program for engines intended to work with electrified vehicles—not a confirmed engine option in a Toyota currently for sale.
