Yes: Toyota is building a V8-powered GR Supra race car for Australia’s Repco Supercars Championship, with its entry announced for the 2026 season. That is a purpose-built competition car, not a V8 version of the GR Supra road car. Its entry sets up a championship challenge; it does not, by itself, establish that the Supra has beaten its rivals.
What Toyota announced
Toyota Australia announced that the GR Supra would join the Repco Supercars Championship from 2026, with Walkinshaw Andretti United initially named as its homologation partner. Toyota identified the 2UR-GSE all-aluminium, quad-cam V8 as the project’s baseline engine in its entry announcement.
That announcement-stage description is not the final detailed race specification. On 1 September 2025, Supercars reported a developed 5.2-litre competition version of the 2UR-GSE. The update is a reminder to distinguish the engine named at launch from the later specification reported for racing.
How the race engine differs from the initial description
Supercars reported the competition engine with a 94 × 94 mm bore and stroke, hydraulic variable valve timing and a bespoke inlet manifold. Those are technical details of the race program; they do not mean the championship car is mechanically identical to a showroom Supra.

The 5.2-litre specification and its dimensions were reported by Supercars in its engine specification update. Toyota’s original announcement called the 2UR-GSE the baseline engine, while the later Supercars report described the developed race version.
What “challenge the best supercars” means here
In this context, the challenge is a championship campaign against the other entries in Supercars—not a demonstrated head-to-head win over road-going supercars. A purpose-built race car and a production road car compete under different rules and conditions, so a direct performance comparison would need a defined test or race result.

The available program information establishes Toyota’s planned championship entry and the engine development, not a victory, lap-time advantage or overall ranking against the field. The meaningful measures will be the car’s performance under the series’ rules and its results once it races.

Toyota’s GR Supra Supercar was unveiled ahead of the 2026 championship. A later Supercars program report listed five Supras: two for Walkinshaw TWG Racing and three for Brad Jones Racing. Walkinshaw Andretti United was the initially named homologation partner; the later team allocation describes the program’s entries, rather than changing the original announcement into a road-car partnership.
