Yes—Toyota is still pursuing hydrogen, but its strategy is broader than selling fuel-cell passenger cars. The company is developing fuel-cell systems for commercial trucks and other applications, stationary power generators, and the production, transport, storage, and refueling infrastructure needed to use hydrogen. Its latest North American plans focus on Class 8 trucks and commercial fueling, while its next-generation system is not scheduled for market introduction before 2027 at the earliest.
What Toyota means by a hydrogen future
Toyota presents hydrogen as one part of its multi-pathway approach to carbon neutrality, rather than a single replacement for every powertrain. Its global overview describes work across hydrogen production, transport, storage, and use, with fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) and stationary fuel-cell generators among the applications. The vehicle work includes passenger cars as well as commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses. Toyota’s hydrogen overview describes this as a broad ecosystem, not just a vehicle program.
This is Toyota’s stated strategy, not evidence that hydrogen is the best choice in every market or duty cycle. The announcements discussed here do not compare lifecycle emissions or total ownership costs with battery-electric or diesel alternatives across regions and uses.
What Toyota’s third-generation fuel-cell system is designed to do
Toyota announced its third-generation fuel-cell system on February 14, 2025. It says the system is designed with commercial-sector needs in mind, while also being suitable for passenger vehicles and general-purpose applications such as stationary generators, rail, and ships. Toyota said market introduction was planned after 2026 at the earliest in markets mainly including Japan, Europe, North America, and China. That is a future plan, not confirmation of a 2026 launch. Toyota’s announcement of the third-generation system does not specify a quantified cost reduction.

#1 Best Overall
- The Hydrogen fuel trolley uses zinc particles and food grade citric acid to synthesize hydrogen, and then uses the produced hydrogen and air to generate electricity to drive the trolley.
- During the experiment, please use 80℃ hot water for Combination reaction (if the water temperature is low, the amount of hydrogen and air pressure from the Combination reaction are insufficient, the fuel cell cannot be used for power generation), and then take off the plug of the vent pipe at the lower part of the fuel cell, release the gas in the rubber hose immediately, and then plug it back immediately, so that only pure hydrogen and air are in the fuel cell, so that the fuel cell can generate hydrogen air power.
- Durability: Toyota says the new system offers up to twice the durability of its prior generation.
- Fuel efficiency and range: Toyota reports 1.2 times the fuel efficiency of the prior generation and says that enables 20% more cruising range.
- Cost: Toyota says it expects significant cost reductions, but did not publish a specific amount in the announcement.
These are Toyota’s comparisons with its previous fuel-cell system. They are not comparative claims against battery-electric vehicles or diesel engines.
North America: trucks, fuel supply, and stationary power
In a May 5, 2026 update, Toyota Motor North America described a set of commercial plans and existing certifications. The dates below are schedules Toyota stated in that announcement; they should not be read as proof that deployments or stations are already operating.

- 1.This hydrogen fuel cell car model adopts hydrogen-oxygen power generation principle, creating clean energy driving effect to intuitively demonstrate new energy and fuel cell working mechanism.
- 2.It produces hydrogen through the reaction of zinc particles and citric acid, converting chemical energy into electric power to drive the car, helping learners understand energy conversion knowledge visually.
- 3.Designed with complete experimental accessories including hydrogen cylinder, fuel celland spare plug for convenient assembly and smooth science experiment operation.
- 4.Requires 80℃ hot water for stable chemical reaction to ensure sufficient hydrogen output; simple vent exhaust operation helps maintain pure gas for normal power generation performance.
- 5.Ideal STEM teaching instrument for classroom education, home science projects and tech learning.
Class 8 truck deployments
Toyota said it planned to put fuel-cell Class 8 trucks into its commercial logistics fleets by early 2027. It also announced a collaboration with Hyroad that Toyota expected to become one of the largest U.S. commercial hydrogen-truck deployments, starting in 2026. Toyota did not report that these planned deployments had already begun in the announcement. Toyota Motor North America’s May 2026 update sets out the plans.
Fuel supply and refueling
Toyota announced a definitive agreement with Air Liquide to supply hydrogen fuel at Toyota’s North American Parts Center California campus. The company said fueling was expected to begin later in 2026 using a mobile heavy-duty station, followed by a permanent station intended to serve fuel-cell vehicles of different makes and sizes. The release describes the sequence as a plan, not an operating-station status report.

Stationary generators and other Gen 3 applications
Toyota reported that its stationary fuel-cell generators had received ANSI/CSA FC 1 and FC 6 certification. It identifies potential uses including hospitals, data centers, remote facilities, and disaster response. The same announcement says Toyota is continuing to develop Gen 3 variants for passenger vehicles, medium-duty construction equipment, stationary power, and heavy-duty Class 8 trucks.
What the reported figures show—and what they do not
Toyota has reported activity across passenger cars, commercial systems, and stationary power, but the figures cover different periods, geographies, and measures. They are not directly additive or comparable as a single fleet count.

Where the Mirai fits
The Mirai remains the passenger-car example within a much wider corporate program. Toyota’s approximately 28,000 cumulative Mirai sales figure offers context for the scale of its consumer-facing fuel-cell effort, while the company’s system-supply figures and commercial announcements point to other intended uses. Those measures do not establish how competitive hydrogen passenger cars are on cost, emissions, or convenience in a particular location.
What Toyota’s announcements leave unanswered
Toyota’s releases explain what the company is pursuing and describe selected deployments, certifications, and performance claims. They do not resolve the comparisons a buyer, fleet operator, or policymaker would need to choose a powertrain. In particular, the cited material does not establish:
Best Value
- Horizon puts renewable energy technology into the hands of our future scientists
- Solar Hydrogen Education Kit generates clean energy using the sun
- Renewable hydrogen is created using only solar energy and water
- Combining cutting-edge science, education and fun for all!
- Includes fuel cell, small electric motor, propeller blade, experiment manual and assembly guide
- Lifecycle emissions for hydrogen production and use compared with electricity or diesel in each region.
- Total ownership and operating costs for different vehicle types and duty cycles.
- How available and reliable hydrogen refueling will be beyond the announced sites and deployments.
- A quantified cost reduction for the third-generation system.
Those answers depend on location, hydrogen supply, infrastructure, and application. Toyota’s public position is that fuel cells belong in a portfolio of carbon-neutrality options; its announcements do not demonstrate that hydrogen is the right option for every car, truck, or power application.
