Toyota’s liquid-hydrogen-powered TR LH2 Racing Prototype made its public demonstration debut at Circuit de la Sarthe on June 11, 2026. It was not Toyota’s entry in the Le Mans 24 Hours: that was the separate TR010 HYBRID Hypercar. Toyota says the prototype shares the TR010’s chassis, but the two cars had different roles at Le Mans.
Did Toyota race a liquid-hydrogen car at Le Mans?
No. The TR LH2 Racing Prototype completed a demonstration lap; Toyota entered the TR010 HYBRID in the 94th Le Mans 24 Hours, held June 13–14, 2026. Toyota Europe’s June 11 release described the prototype as “based on the same chassis as the TR010 HYBRID Hypercar which will compete in the Le Mans 24 Hours on 13-14 June.” Sharing a chassis did not make the TR LH2 a race entry.

Toyota Canada had announced planned demonstration laps for June 11 and 13. Toyota’s June 11 report confirms that the car lapped the circuit that day with three-time Le Mans winner Kazuki Nakajima driving; it does not establish that the prototype completed a race or ran against the Hypercar field. Circuit de la Sarthe is listed by Toyota Canada as 13.626 km long.
What is the TR LH2 Racing Prototype?
It is a motorsport hydrogen-development vehicle with a hydrogen-fuelled combustion engine. Toyota presented its Le Mans appearance as a demonstration of that technology, not as a competitive result. Hydrogen combustion is distinct from a hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain: Toyota separately mentioned fuel-cell buses and a truck in its race-week activities, but described the TR LH2’s engine as hydrogen-fuelled.

- Real rubber tires
- Made of quality die-cast metal
- Includes a 2. 75" Brian O'Conner die-cast figure
The prototype was also shown in the Hydrogen Village, an exhibition of hydrogen technology at the event. Toyota’s announcements establish its demonstration and development role, but do not provide a lap-time comparison, endurance result, hydrogen-consumption figure, or independently measured performance statistic for the TR LH2.
How the TR LH2 differs from Toyota’s Le Mans race car
| Vehicle | Role at the 2026 Le Mans 24 Hours | Powertrain or fuel detail stated by Toyota |
|---|---|---|
| TR LH2 Racing Prototype | Hydrogen-development vehicle; made a demonstration lap, not a race entry | Liquid-hydrogen-fuelled combustion engine |
| TR010 HYBRID Hypercar | Toyota’s Hypercar entry in the 24-hour race | Hybrid, as identified in Toyota’s vehicle name; further details are not stated in the cited demonstration announcements |
Toyota describes the two cars as sharing a chassis. The cited event announcements do not establish that they share a powertrain, nor do they provide a direct performance comparison.

Toyota’s hydrogen racing-development timeline
The TR LH2 follows several distinct Toyota hydrogen vehicles and concepts. Toyota traces its motorsport engine work to the ORC ROOKIE GR Corolla H2 Concept, which used gaseous hydrogen in Japanese Super Taikyu from 2021. Toyota says a liquid-hydrogen-powered car followed from 2023, and that the GR Corolla H2 completed a Le Mans demonstration lap that year. Toyota also presented the GR H2 Racing Concept as a preview of a possible future hydrogen category.

In 2025, Toyota unveiled a separate vehicle, the liquid-hydrogen-powered GR LH2 Racing Concept, at Le Mans. The TR LH2 Racing Prototype’s 2026 demonstration is the next step Toyota identifies in this development sequence. These are different named vehicles and milestones: a concept unveiling is not the same as a race entry or a demonstration lap.

What Toyota’s announcement does—and does not—show
The June 2026 Toyota releases document the prototype’s public appearance, chassis relationship, demonstration, and place in Toyota’s development programme. They do not establish that liquid hydrogen made the car faster, more durable, more efficient, or lower-emitting than a comparable race car. Toyota’s releases also provide no lifecycle-emissions comparison. The event announcement’s roughly 300,000 expected fans was a pre-event estimate from Toyota (GB), not a final attendance count.
