Toyota’s liquid-hydrogen-powered GR Corolla completed 483 laps at the 2026 Fuji 24 Hours, but its new superconducting pump did not yet meet the durability demands of a full endurance race. The test paired a hydrogen-combustion engine with a pump mounted inside a larger tank and, for the first time, Toyota’s Direct Automatic Transmission (DAT). The result was a development milestone—not a production-car announcement or proof the technology is ready for road use.
What Toyota brought to the 2026 Fuji 24 Hours
The entry was the #32 TGRR GR Corolla H2 Concept, competing in the ENEOS Super Taikyu Series’ Fuji 24 Hours. It burns hydrogen in an internal-combustion engine; it is not a hydrogen fuel-cell electric car. Toyota’s June 5, 2026 entry announcement described the car’s updated tank and pump arrangement and its first pairing of a hydrogen engine with DAT.

The changes addressed two practical constraints: how much liquid hydrogen the car could carry, and how to package the equipment without compromising the race car’s layout. Toyota said the pump motor had been moved inside the tank, freeing space for more capacity and lowering the car’s center of gravity.

What changed in the tank and pump
For 2026, Toyota replaced the conventional electric motor driving the liquid-hydrogen pump with a superconducting motor. Liquid hydrogen’s temperature—about −253°C, according to Toyota—provides the cryogenic environment for the superconducting system. The pump’s location inside the tank was part of the packaging change, not a claim that the fuel itself eliminates the engineering challenges of pumping it.

Toyota’s pre-race announcement said the tank’s maximum capacity had grown to 300 liters, up from 220 liters at the end of the 2025 season. That is a tank-capacity figure, not a measured range or a guarantee of a particular number of laps. Toyota project general manager Naoaki Ito said the configuration carried enough liquid hydrogen for a theoretical 40 laps, while cautioning that this did not mean the car could reliably run 40 laps like a gasoline-powered car.
| Configuration or figure | What Toyota reported | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 season finale | 220-liter tank; pump motor outside/on top of the tank | Prior-year packaging and capacity, as described in Toyota’s 2026 coverage. |
| 2026 pre-race configuration | Maximum tank capacity of 300 liters; pump motor moved inside the tank | Pre-race specification, not a measured usable range. |
| 2026 race result | 483 laps, reported by Toyota as a record for this Fuji effort | A race-distance result, not a direct measurement of the pump’s durability or fuel range. |
The 2025-to-2026 comparison and race result are reported by Toyota Times’ July 28, 2026 account; Toyota’s original pre-race specification is in its June announcement.
Did the new pump work?
It worked as a development system, but Toyota’s post-race account identifies durability and fuel-management problems that prevented the larger tank from delivering more range. The pump gears could not withstand the required 24-hour duty cycle. Because the pump was built inside the tank and highly loaded parts could not simply be swapped, the team spent about four hours changing the tank assembly.

Toyota also reported increased hydrogen boil-off. Fuel warming and sloshing, alongside pump vibration and load, contributed to the challenge: carrying more liquid hydrogen did not translate into increased range. The distinction matters in endurance racing, where capacity only helps if the fuel can be stored and delivered reliably over a long stint.
These shortcomings do not erase the 483-lap result. Toyota Times called it a record for the hydrogen-engine Corolla’s sixth year at Fuji. But the lap count is evidence of the car’s race effort, not proof that the pump achieved its intended durability or that the capacity increase produced longer stints.
Why Toyota added DAT—and what the race says about the technology
Toyota paired its hydrogen engine with its Direct Automatic Transmission for the first time in this car. The combination adds a transmission-development dimension to the test, alongside the more visible work on the cryogenic pump and tank. Toyota’s entry announcement establishes the new pairing but does not quantify any performance or driver-workload benefit, so the race result should not be read as a measured comparison of DAT against another transmission.

The central engineering trade-off was between packaging and endurance reliability. Moving the motor inside the tank helped make room for additional capacity and supported a lower center of gravity, but it also made a pump-related repair a tank-assembly job. More capacity was useful only if Toyota could limit boil-off and keep the pump operating under vibration and load.

In its July 28, 2026 technical follow-up, Toyota said it was developing a linear-drive superconducting pump with support from Japan’s Railway Technical Research Institute. The account describes ongoing development; it gives no production timetable.
The collaboration reflects the specialized challenge of putting superconducting equipment into a race car. Kyoto University professor Taketsune Nakamura, who collaborated on pump development, said, “The idea of using a superconducting pump in a race car almost defies logic.” The project is an effort to test and improve the system in competition, not an announcement that a road-going hydrogen Corolla is on sale or scheduled.

How this fits Toyota’s earlier liquid-hydrogen work
Toyota’s earlier figures are useful context, but they describe a different year and must not be mistaken for 2026 results. In a May 24, 2024 technical announcement, Toyota gave a 220-liter tank and 15 kilograms of hydrogen as targets for that year’s Fuji race, with about 30 Fuji laps as the target. Those historical targets are not a specification or range result for the 2026 car.
Across the two years, the meaningful comparison is not simply 220 versus 300 liters. The newer layout increased maximum tank capacity, while the race exposed the separate problems of pump durability and hydrogen boil-off. Neither the tank volume nor the 483-lap total, by itself, establishes road-car efficiency or readiness.
