The script appeared on company communications in 1903; an oval was used by British agents in 1907; Ford paired the script and oval in 1911; and the oval became a vehicle radiator badge on the 1927 Model A. After a gap in vehicle-badge use, Ford says the blue-and-silver oval has identified all its vehicles since 1976.
What was Ford’s first logo?
Ford’s early identity began with lettering, not the familiar blue oval. The company says Ford script appeared on its communications at the start of 1903. Its first production car, the Model A, had a separate logo featuring an Art Nouveau border. Ford Mexico describes that first mark as an ornamental design incorporating the company name and “Detroit, Michigan,” and attributes it to C. Harold Willis.

In 1906, Ford adopted a more recognizable script, with long tails on the “F” and “D.” Ford called this treatment “script with wings.” Ford Mexico also describes a move to the simpler Ford script. The script trademark was registered at the United States Patent Office in 1909, according to Ford.
When did Ford get the Blue Oval?
There are several relevant dates, depending on what “introduce” means. Ford’s account distinguishes the first oval use, the combination of script and oval, the oval’s first appearance as a vehicle badge, and its later use across the vehicle range.

| Year | What changed | Context |
|---|---|---|
| 1907 | First Ford oval use | British agents Perry, Thornton and Schreiber used an oval to promote Ford as a “hallmark for reliability and economy.” |
| 1911 | Script combined with an oval | Ford dates the combination into a definitive logo to this year. Script lettering continued on vehicles and company communications into the late 1920s. |
| 1927 | Oval used as a vehicle radiator badge | The new Model A was the first Ford vehicle to carry the oval as a radiator badge. |
| 1976 | Blue-and-silver oval adopted for broad vehicle identification | Ford says the oval has identified all Ford vehicles since this year. |
These are different milestones, not competing answers: 1907 is the first oval use in Ford’s account, 1911 is the script-and-oval logo, 1927 is its first use as a Ford vehicle radiator badge, and 1976 marks its use as an identification badge on all Ford vehicles.
Why did Ford use a winged triangle?
In 1912, Ford briefly set the oval aside for a winged-triangle design. It was meant to suggest speed, lightness, grace and stability, and appeared in orange or dark blue with the words “The Universal Car.” Ford says it was swiftly discontinued after Henry Ford disliked it. The detour was short-lived; it did not replace the script as a lasting company identity.

How did the oval become a Ford vehicle badge?
The 1927 Model A radiator badge
The new Model A in 1927 was the first Ford vehicle to wear the oval as a radiator badge. Ford describes the badge background as deep royal blue and says the oval appeared on many cars until the end of the 1950s.

The Blue Oval did not remain on Ford grilles continuously after 1927. Ford says it disappeared from vehicle bonnets and grilles from the late 1950s until the mid-1970s, while the word “Ford” appeared on vehicles instead. The oval continued to be used on company communications during that interval.

Its return across Ford vehicles
Ford dates the return of the blue-and-silver oval as an identification badge on all Ford vehicles to 1976. This broad use is distinct from its earlier, more limited appearance on the Model A and other cars.

The script has remained central, while color and finish have varied. Ford Mexico describes chrome-like lines around the oval in the 1970s and a blue gradient in 2003. Its page also reports a 2018 modernization with solid colors and a more dynamic appearance. That 2018 date is Ford Mexico’s account; Ford Middle East’s history emphasizes the 1976 blue-and-silver vehicle badge and does not provide the same later treatment timeline.
