That is useful evidence for those two three-row SUVs—not proof that every Toyota beats every Chevrolet.
What the Toyota-versus-Chevrolet question really requires

- Practical fit: check seating, cargo dimensions, payload, towing, ground clearance and access for your actual trips.

If one of those factors is non-negotiable—for example, a specific towing rating or a third-row that fits adults—it should eliminate unsuitable vehicles before brand preference enters the decision.

It does not tell you whether its price, third-row comfort, cargo arrangement, towing setup or local ownership cost is better for your household.
What the scores can and cannot answer
- The overall score is a combined model assessment in that guide; it is not a brand score.
- The road-test result describes the tested vehicle’s driving performance as represented by the guide, not every engine, trim or drivetrain.
- The reliability marker is a prediction for that model, not a guarantee for an individual vehicle or a statement about every Toyota or Chevrolet.
- The 22-mpg and 20-mpg figures are model-level overall fuel-economy figures. Your result can vary with drivetrain, tires, weather, traffic, load and driving style.
Is Toyota more reliable than Chevrolet?
There is no complete matched-model reliability study in the available evidence that supports a blanket answer. The strongest current evidence names particular models, not all vehicles wearing one badge.
J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study names the Toyota Corolla, Camry, Tacoma, Sienna and 4Runner among model-level award recipients. It also names the Chevrolet Equinox and Tahoe. Those seven names show that both manufacturers have models recognized in that study. - Check whether a dependability result applies to that exact configuration or only to a model line.
- Look for recurring problem patterns, recalls and service campaigns rather than relying on a single award headline.
- Compare warranty terms separately. A warranty limits some financial exposure; it does not prove that failures will be rare.
- Ask a local dealer or independent repair shop about parts availability, common service needs and technician familiarity with the specific powertrain.
A yellow or green marker, or a study award, is a useful input to a decision. It should not override a vehicle that fails your space, safety or capability requirements.

How to compare Toyota and Chevrolet prices fairly
Manufacturer pages display starting MSRPs and estimated fuel economy for individual 2026 Toyota models, but those figures vary by vehicle and configuration. A base price is not a transaction quote, and a Toyota listing does not provide a matched Chevrolet price table. Chevrolet pricing must be checked for the exact competing vehicle, trim and equipment.
Build an apples-to-apples price sheet

- Is the quoted estimate for front-wheel drive, all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive?

- Will you carry passengers, tow or drive at highway speeds often enough to change real-world consumption?
- How much does fuel cost where you live, and how many miles do you drive annually?

To estimate annual fuel expense, divide your expected annual miles by the vehicle’s applicable miles-per-gallon figure, then multiply by your local fuel price. Use that estimate for both vehicles under the same assumptions; do not compare one vehicle’s official estimate with another vehicle’s owner-reported best case.
Safety: verify the exact vehicle and year
Brand reputation cannot substitute for a vehicle-specific safety result. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) evaluates crashworthiness and crash avoidance and mitigation. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) 5-Star program covers frontal and side crashworthiness and rollover resistance. These programs answer related but different questions, so their ratings should not be collapsed into one informal brand score.

A practical safety check
- Write down the exact model year, body style, trim and drivetrain.
- Search that configuration in both the IIHS vehicle ratings and NHTSA Car Safety Ratings systems.
- Read individual test categories, not only an overall award. Check headlights, pedestrian protection, child-seat fit information and driver-assistance performance where reported.
- Confirm whether a rating applies to all trims or only vehicles built after a design or equipment change.
- Check open recalls by vehicle identification number before purchase and again after delivery.
A newer model can have different crash structures or standard driver assistance from its predecessor. A high rating for one Toyota SUV says nothing conclusive about a Chevrolet pickup, just as a strong Chevrolet result cannot be transferred to every Toyota car.

The available evidence does not establish a comprehensive Toyota-versus-Chevrolet comparison for seating, cargo dimensions, towing, payload or ground clearance. Those specifications must be collected for the actual two vehicles and the exact configurations you are considering.

Reading a safety headline without checking the year
Crash tests and standard equipment can change after a redesign. Confirm the exact model year and configuration in IIHS and NHTSA records.
Ignoring the third row or cargo reality
Seat a real passenger, install your child seats and load the objects you carry. A favorable brochure dimension cannot replace that check.
Confusing warranty with dependability
A warranty describes what the manufacturer may cover under its terms. It does not predict how often a vehicle will need repair or how inconvenient a failure will be.
