“First generation” and “second generation” are convenient shorthand for these two runs, not formal generation labels established by the cited Toyota pages. The timeline here is US-focused; it should not be read as a complete global production chronology.
What distinguishes the two Venza runs?
Original run: 2009–2015
The original Venza ended with the 2015 model year in the timeline supported by the cited Toyota material. Toyota’s 2015 overview presented it as a crossover blending car design with SUV versatility. For that model year, Toyota listed a 2.7-liter four-cylinder and a 3.5-liter V6, with engine and drivetrain availability depending on grade.
These 2015 details describe that model year, not every Venza from 2009 to 2015. Toyota’s 2015 overview says the LE was four-cylinder only, the XLE was available with either engine, and the Limited was V6/AWD only. Returned run: launched for 2021
Toyota marketed the comeback as an all-new 2021 Venza. In a Toyota podcast discussion on May 20, 2021, Vehicle Marketing and Communications representative Sam Goot described the new model as “only available in hybrid.” That statement establishes Toyota’s description at the time of launch, not the powertrain or availability of every later model year. Why there is a gap in the model years
The documented runs are separated: the original Venza appears through 2015 in Toyota’s model-year material, while the name returns on an all-new 2021 model. The sources establish that gap between model-year runs but do not verify the exact discontinuation announcement or a complete annual production chronology. They also do not establish the returned run’s final year, so a later year should not be presented as confirmed from these sources.

What to check when comparing or buying a used Venza
Compare the specific model year, not just the nameplate
A 2015 Venza’s engine and grade combinations cannot be assumed for every earlier year, and the 2021 return is a different model run. Check the exact year’s equipment and powertrain details when comparing vehicles rather than treating the 2015 overview as a specification sheet for the entire original run.
Check recall status by VIN
Toyota’s October 6, 2021 remedy notice covers certain 2009–2015 Venzas under Safety Recall 21TA01, also identified as NHTSA 21V-257. Toyota said a driver-side front-door sensor wire could fracture over time; if it did, a warning lamp could illuminate and the sensor could become inoperable, potentially preventing driver-side side and curtain airbags from deploying in certain crashes. Toyota’s remedy was a dealer inspection and, if necessary, replacement of the wire harness with an improved one at no charge.
