For drivers who can afford it, the 61 kWh front-wheel-drive model offers the strongest balance of range and price; the 61 kWh all-wheel-drive car adds traction and faster acceleration while giving up some range. Toyota’s charging, towing and battery-care figures are useful on paper, although independent real-world range, boot-space and charging tests are not established here.
What is the Toyota Urban Cruiser?
The Urban Cruiser is Toyota’s battery-electric compact SUV. Toyota offers two battery capacities—49 kWh and 61 kWh—with front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) depending on version. The official combined WLTP ranges are up to 344 km for the 49 kWh FWD, 426 km for the 61 kWh FWD and 395 km for the 61 kWh AWD.

Those WLTP numbers are laboratory comparison figures. Weather, speed, heating or air-conditioning use, payload, traffic and wheel specification can all change the distance you achieve between charges, so they should not be treated as guaranteed everyday range.

The Icon makes the Urban Cruiser one of Toyota’s lower-entry electric cars in the UK. The £3,500 step to Design is significant, but it is the point at which the 61 kWh battery and higher output become the key value proposition in Toyota’s pricing story. Excel costs another £2,250, so its extra equipment and drivetrain specification need to match your use rather than simply your desire for the top badge. Exact battery, motor and equipment combinations should be checked on the order sheet because trim names alone do not describe every configuration.

Battery, range and performance
49 kWh FWD
The 49 kWh front-drive version is the price-led choice. Its official range is up to 344 km, and Toyota UK quotes 0–62 mph in 9.6 seconds. It suits shorter commutes and regular access to home or workplace charging, but frequent motorway journeys will require more planning than in the larger-battery cars.
61 kWh FWD
The 61 kWh FWD is the range leader at up to 426 km WLTP. Toyota quotes 0–62 mph in 8.7 seconds, making it quicker than the 49 kWh model while retaining the most efficient drivetrain in the line-up. This is the most convincing option for mixed urban, regional and occasional longer-distance driving if all-wheel drive is not essential.

61 kWh AWD
The 61 kWh AWD combines the larger battery with four-wheel traction. Its official range falls to 395 km, reflecting the additional drivetrain hardware, but it should be the logical choice for drivers who regularly face slippery roads, steep access routes or unpaved surfaces. It also trades the FWD model’s range advantage for extra traction and stronger acceleration; confirm the exact performance figure for the chosen UK specification.

Toyota describes the Urban Cruiser as a mains-charged battery-electric vehicle and quotes approximately 45 minutes for a 10–80% DC fast charge. That is a manufacturer estimate, not an independent test result. Actual time can vary with charger output, battery temperature, the car’s state of charge and charger availability.

- Home charging is generally the simplest and most predictable routine if you have off-street parking and a suitable tariff.
- Public fast charging matters more for the 49 kWh car because its shorter WLTP range can mean more stops on long trips.
- Check the public networks on routes you use, their reliability and pricing, rather than judging ownership solely by the quoted 10–80% time.
- Compare the cost of installing a home charger, electricity tariffs and public-session fees before choosing a battery.
Space and everyday practicality
Toyota says its “clever design and intelligent packaging of the EV powertrain components” maximises cabin and load-compartment space. That packaging should help the Urban Cruiser make efficient use of its compact footprint, and Toyota states that every version can tow a braked load of up to 750 kg.
There is no independently measured boot volume or rear-seat assessment in the available specifications. If you regularly carry adults in the back, a pushchair, bulky sports equipment or towing gear, inspect the car in person and test the loading opening before placing an order. The 750 kg limit is a braked-trailer maximum; check the vehicle’s exact plate and national towing rules for your configuration.

Equipment and choosing a trim
Choose Icon when entry price matters most
Icon is the sensible starting point for buyers whose priority is a Toyota EV at the lowest listed price and whose daily driving is predictable. The 49 kWh battery’s range is the main limitation, so the saving only works if charging is convenient and long trips are occasional.
Choose Design for the strongest all-round value
Design’s £3,500 premium is easiest to justify when it buys the 61 kWh battery and its higher output. The extra range reduces charging stops and gives more flexibility for winter or motorway use. It is the version to investigate first for most private buyers, subject to the final equipment list and finance terms.
Choose Excel for specific equipment or traction needs
Excel adds £2,250 over Design. Pay that difference when its additional equipment or the available AWD specification solves a real need—such as improved traction—not merely because it is the most expensive trim. Confirm whether the quoted vehicle is FWD or AWD, since AWD carries a lower official range than 61 kWh FWD.
Battery warranty and long-term confidence
Toyota states that its battery-care guarantee covers retention of at least 70% of original capacity for up to 10 years or 1,000,000 km, subject to an annual EV Health Check and applicable local terms. This is a capacity-retention condition, not a promise that the car will deliver its original range in every situation. Keep the required checks documented and read the UK warranty wording before purchase.
