Some Toyota Tundras with the twin-turbo V6 have been recalled because machining debris left in certain engines can damage a crankshaft main bearing. The possible results include engine knocking, rough running, failure to start or stalling. A model year or symptom alone does not confirm that a truck is covered: recall eligibility is specific to the vehicle and campaign, so check its VIN and contact a Toyota dealer about recall work or symptoms.
What is the Tundra V6 engine problem?
Toyota and NHTSA describe a manufacturing-debris issue in certain V35A engines. During a specific production period, debris of a particular size and amount might not have been cleared from the engine during manufacturing. If debris adheres to the crankshaft main bearings, continued engine operation under higher loads over time may lead to bearing failure. The bearings allow the crankshaft to rotate while the engine runs. NHTSA’s 2025 report describes the mechanism and affected engine configuration.
The filings do not say that every V35A engine or every Tundra from a listed year has the defect. Toyota said it could not estimate what percentage of the vehicles in the 2025 campaign actually contain it.
What symptoms should owners watch for?
Toyota and NHTSA list these possible outcomes:
- Engine knocking
- Rough running
- Failure to start
- Engine stall
A stall while driving can cause loss of motive power and increase crash risk, particularly at higher speeds. These symptoms do not prove a truck is part of a recall, and the reports do not identify a single sound or symptom that establishes eligibility. If the truck has symptoms, contact a Toyota dealer; do not rely on symptom matching in place of a VIN check.

Which Tundras are included in the recalls?
Toyota has reported multiple campaigns with different populations and remedy statuses. The figures below are estimates of potentially covered vehicles—not counts of confirmed engine failures. A truck’s model year alone is not enough to determine coverage.
| Campaign and report date | Reported scope and geography | Remedy status in the cited notice |
|---|---|---|
| 24V381 / Toyota 24TA07, May 30, 2024 | Toyota estimated approximately 98,600 certain 2022–2023 model-year Tundras in the United States, produced from early November 2021 through mid-February 2023. Toyota’s filing. | Free replacement of the engine assembly. Toyota’s dealer planning document says the assembly replacement includes the turbos, intercooler and fuel system. Dealer planning material. |
| 25V767, November 2025 | NHTSA’s report identifies 113,079 potentially involved U.S. Tundras: certain 2022–2024 vehicles with a particular V35A configuration, produced November 22, 2021 through February 14, 2024. The report distinguishes production periods and engine configurations, including engines made with improved manufacturing processes and others with an improved main bearing. NHTSA Part 573 report. | The cited report describes the campaign population and defect; it does not establish that every listed vehicle has the defect. Toyota said it could not estimate the fraction that actually contained it. |
| 26V320, May 20, 2026 | NHTSA identifies certain 2024 Tundras with a V35A engine and estimates 43,566 potentially affected U.S. vehicles. The filing says the campaign expands 24V381 and 25V767. NHTSA campaign filing. | As of Toyota’s May 20, 2026 report, the remedy was under development; repairs were planned to be free when available. |
| Toyota Canada announcement, May 20, 2026 | Toyota Canada estimated approximately 3,734 certain 2024 non-hybrid Tundras in Canada. The notice says remaining debris could damage the No. 1 main bearing despite added debris-removal controls, and that later-produced engines had an improved No. 1 main bearing. Toyota Canada announcement. | Toyota Canada said remedy preparations for the 2026 and November 2025 recalls were ongoing at announcement. |
Campaign populations can overlap or differ because of engine configuration, production period and geography. The U.S. and Canadian counts and procedures are not interchangeable. The numbers above describe campaign estimates, not confirmed failures.

Will Toyota replace the Tundra engine?
For certain 2022–2023 trucks in campaign 24V381
Toyota’s remedy notice calls for replacement of the engine assembly at no cost to the customer for vehicles covered by that campaign. The dealer planning material describes an assembly that includes the turbos, intercooler and fuel system. Coverage still depends on the specific vehicle’s VIN.
For the later campaigns
The May 20, 2026 NHTSA filing for 26V320 states, “The remedy is currently under development.” Toyota Canada’s announcement that day also said it was preparing remedies for the newer campaigns. Those notices do not establish that all vehicles in the later campaigns already have a final remedy or will receive the same engine-assembly replacement documented for 24V381. Check current campaign status for the individual truck with Toyota or NHTSA.

How to check a Tundra recall by VIN
- Find the vehicle identification number (VIN) and enter it in NHTSA’s recall lookup or Toyota’s recall lookup at Toyota.com/recall.
- Use the VIN result to see whether that specific vehicle needs recall repair. NHTSA explains that searches by year, make and model show general information, while VIN or license-plate searches report whether a specific vehicle needs recall repair. NHTSA recall lookup guidance.
- Contact a Toyota dealer if the lookup shows an open campaign, if the truck has engine symptoms, or if you need clarification about a campaign or repair. Ask about the vehicle’s VIN-specific status and any available remedy.
Do not treat a year/model result, a symptom, or a campaign population estimate as confirmation that a particular truck is included.

The documented issue is manufacturing debris inside certain engines, and the official notices describe manufacturer or dealer campaign action. An aftermarket bearing, engine additive, generic diagnostic tool or owner-performed repair is not an established remedy for this recall. For a covered truck, use the manufacturer’s campaign process and ask a Toyota dealer about the correct next step.
