In the documented 1983 Chevrolet truck system, the rear differential acts freely in normal traction and locks automatically when wheel-speed and vehicle-speed conditions trigger its governor-and-clutch mechanism. For any particular vehicle, the owner’s and service manuals for its model year and axle determine the details.
What does the G80 code mean?
G80 is a GM RPO code associated with locking differential equipment. GM describes its purpose generally as helping both wheels on an axle turn together for added traction in certain off-road conditions. The code alone is not enough to identify every internal design or tell you how a particular vehicle operates. GM directs owners to the vehicle’s own manual for application-specific details: GM locking-differential support.
How does a G80 locking differential work?
The documented 1983 Chevrolet truck mechanism
In GM’s 1983 Chevrolet truck information kit, the G80 rear axle operates as a free differential under good traction. When one rear wheel slips enough to meet that system’s activation conditions, a governor triggers a cam mechanism that applies a multiple-disc clutch. The clutch then becomes self-energizing, increasing the locking action. When traction becomes approximately equal at both wheels, the lock disengages automatically. GM summarized its normal-traction behavior this way: “Under good tractive conditions, the unit operates as a completely free, standard differential.”
For that specific 1983 truck documentation, the stated trigger is approximately 100 rpm of wheel-to-wheel speed difference while vehicle speed is under 20 mph; the governor system is prevented from applying the locking clutch above approximately 20 mph. These are figures for the cited application, not universal G80 thresholds.

What later GM documentation shows
GM’s 2026 Sierra HD body builder/service manual describes the optional G80 as combining limited-slip characteristics with the ability for the axle shafts to lock together under uneven traction. It lists clutch disc sets, a locking differential governor, a latching bracket, and a cam plate assembly. This confirms that clutch- and governor-related parts exist in that application, but does not establish that every G80-equipped vehicle uses identical internals or operating logic.
Does a G80 lock both rear wheels?
In the described locking condition, the axle can couple its axle shafts so the wheels turn together and deliver traction when one side has less grip. In ordinary traction, the 1983 system remains a free differential; it does not stay locked continuously. Exact behavior—including engagement and release conditions—depends on the specific vehicle and axle.

Why you should not transfer one vehicle’s instructions to another
GM documentation illustrates why the RPO code is not a substitute for a vehicle manual. The 1983 truck’s automatic governor-triggered clutch is distinct from the driver-operated locking-axle procedure documented in the 2018 Colorado Owner’s Manual. That Colorado procedure sets a 40 km/h (25 mph) engagement threshold and says the axle disengages above that speed except when Off-Road Mode applies. Those controls and thresholds are Colorado-specific; they should not be treated as instructions for an older automatic G80.
The Colorado manual also warns against engaging its locking axle while stuck with tires spinning because drivetrain damage can result, and says not to drive on pavement with that axle locked: 2018 Chevrolet Colorado Owner’s Manual. Those cautions apply to the Colorado system described in that manual, not automatically to every G80 application.

What parts fit my G80 rear end?
GM’s 2026 Sierra HD service documentation establishes that G80-related service parts can include clutch discs, a governor, a latching bracket, and a cam plate assembly. It does not establish that those components—or a complete rebuild kit—fit every GM axle carrying the G80 code. Before buying “GM G80 locking differential rebuild parts,” identify the vehicle’s model year and exact axle assembly, then confirm fitment against vehicle-specific service information and a parts lookup. The G80 code by itself is not a sufficient compatibility check.
What about lubricant and service?
Do not infer a lubricant specification, limited-slip additive requirement, service interval, or rebuild procedure from the G80 code alone. GM’s historical service information includes application-specific lubricant cautions, so broad advice can be wrong for a different axle. Use the owner’s or service manual for the exact vehicle and axle for lubricant and maintenance requirements.

How to compare a G80 with another traction option
Compare the actual systems on the vehicle, rather than relying on labels alone. Useful differences to verify in the relevant manuals include:
- Whether engagement is automatic or driver-selected.
- Whether operation is mechanical, using clutch and governor components, or electronically controlled.
- The wheel-speed and vehicle-speed conditions for engagement and release.
- How the system behaves during normal cornering and on high-traction surfaces.
- Vehicle-specific maintenance and lubricant instructions.
- Exact axle assembly and replacement-part compatibility.
GM’s general support page explains the traction purpose of locking differentials; the vehicle documentation supplies the operating details that determine whether two systems are truly comparable.
