A class action that included some Toyota Tacoma owners accused Toyota of a hands-free phone-system echo: during a call, the other person allegedly heard their own words repeated. The case, Kesselman v. Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., et al., is no longer pending. The court-authorized settlement site reports that final judgment was entered on March 24, 2026, and that no appeals were filed. The settlement did not decide whether Toyota was at fault.
What Tacoma owners alleged
The plaintiffs alleged that when a Toyota driver used the vehicle’s hands-free phone system to make or receive a call, the person on the other end could hear an echo of their own speech. They principally claimed Toyota failed to disclose the alleged issue in violation of consumer-protection laws. Toyota denied the claims and denied wrongdoing; the court-authorized settlement FAQ states, “The Court has not decided who is right.” That is the FAQ’s wording, not a finding by the judge.
The operative Fifth Amended Class Action Complaint, filed January 6, 2025, listed 13 causes of action. It included Tacoma plaintiffs and alleged that certain Tacoma model years used hands-free hardware and software shared with earlier model years, without modifications to correct the claimed echo. Those statements are allegations in the complaint, not verified technical findings.
Which Tacoma owners are included
The Tacoma model years listed in the settlement are 2014 through 2019. A model-year match alone is not enough: the class definition also requires that a person or legal entity owned, leased, or purchased a covered vehicle as of August 18, 2025, and that the vehicle was associated with one of the specified states.

The settlement also covers specified years of other Toyota models, but the Tacoma coverage is not nationwide. The class is mandatory under Rule 23(b)(2), so members could not opt out. The deadline to object was January 14, 2026, and has passed. The official settlement FAQ provides the full class definition; it cannot determine an individual reader’s legal rights or eligibility.
What the settlement provides—and what it does not
The settlement provides injunctive relief through an outreach program intended to explain the alleged echo issue and how to adjust phone and vehicle volume settings. The court-authorized settlement materials describe these measures:

- a phone information line and targeted social-media information; and
- a dealer technical tip.
The described relief does not include a cash payment to class members. Members release claims for injunctive relief concerning the lawsuit’s issues, while the settlement FAQ says monetary or statutory damages, personal-injury claims, and wrongful-death claims are not released. That distinction does not determine whether any particular person has a separate claim; readers with case-specific questions should consult the official settlement materials or a lawyer.
The settlement FAQ says both sides agreed to settle to avoid the cost and risk of further litigation, including a possible trial. Settlement is not an admission of liability by Toyota or a judicial decision that Toyota violated the law.

Where the case stands now
According to the settlement site, final judgment was entered March 24, 2026, and no appeals were filed. The case is therefore presented as settled and final, not as an active lawsuit in which Tacoma owners are currently taking Toyota to court. The settlement FAQ reports that the court approved counsel’s requested $2,850,000 in attorney fees, $273,373.96 in costs and expenses, and up to $95,000 in service awards for class representatives, paid by Toyota defendants. Those are fees, costs, and representative awards—not a cash distribution to class members.
