Dated company announcements show BYD and GWM expanding their physical presence, while reporting from Camaçari offers a striking example of how that change can appear on the ground. The numbers below describe milestones announced in 2025, not verified dealer totals for 2026.
Why dealer visits matter in Brazil’s changing car market
A growing dealer network is one practical measure of an automaker’s commitment to a market: it can make cars easier to see, buy and service. But a network count needs a definition. A full dealership, a mall store, an appointed outlet and a service facility are not interchangeable, and a company’s announcement is evidence of what it reported at that time—not an independent measure of customer experience or dealer quality.
The expansion was taking place amid a growing market for electrified vehicles. The Associated Press, citing the Brazilian Association of Electric Vehicles (ABVE), reported that Brazil sold more than 170,000 electric vehicles in 2024, an 85% increase from 2023 and about 7% of new-car sales. That figure includes hybrids as well as fully electric vehicles; it should not be read as a count of battery-electric cars alone. AP’s April 2025 report provides that market context.
What the announced dealer networks show

The figures are not a like-for-like snapshot: GWM’s number combines full dealerships and mall stores at the end of 2024, while BYD’s May figure counts open dealerships and its October announcement marks a later milestone. Neither establishes either company’s current 2026 total.

GWM: a mix of full dealerships and mall stores
GWM said it ended 2024 with 100 sales points: 79 full dealerships and 21 mall stores. The company also reported selling more than 29,000 vehicles in Brazil in 2024, up more than 154% from 2023. Both are company-reported figures. GWM’s 6 January 2025 announcement gives the network breakdown and sales context.
BYD: expansion across state capitals
On 20 May 2025, BYD said it had 180 open dealerships and that every Brazilian state capital had at least one. The company’s announced goal at the time—272 open and appointed dealerships by the end of 2025—combined operating locations with locations appointed to the network, so it was not equivalent to a count of open stores. BYD’s May announcement quotes senior vice president Alexandre Baldy saying the plan was to be where its customers are.

BYD announced its 200th dealership on 23 October 2025 and set a further goal of 250 stores in the following months. The announcement does not verify that the 250-store target was subsequently met. The October milestone announcement is a dated company update, not a live network count.
A local illustration: BYD beside Ford in Camaçari
AP described a BYD reseller sharing a building with a Ford dealership in Camaçari, a city associated with Ford’s former factory. The arrangement is a vivid illustration of how a new brand can enter an established automotive landscape, but it is one reported example—not evidence that BYD generally shares premises with legacy brands. The AP account also reflects its reporting period in March and April 2025; it should not be treated as an update on the factory project’s status in 2026.

The same report placed the commercial transition alongside questions about China’s presence in Brazil. Adalberto Maluf, then Brazil’s national secretary of Urban Environment and Environmental Quality, told AP that Brazilians generally had no strong geopolitical objection to China. That is his assessment, not a measured public-opinion result. Labor concerns reported around the factory project, including a union leader’s warning about Chinese workers on the production line, concern factory labor relations—not the staffing of car dealerships.
What a showroom count cannot tell you
More locations can improve access to a brand, but the announced totals do not reveal how useful each outlet is to a buyer. A mall store may offer a place to see a vehicle without providing the same sales or service functions as a full dealership. The cited network announcements also do not provide a common, current comparison of geographic coverage beyond BYD’s statement about state capitals, service capacity, model availability, financing, or the customer experience.

- Operating status: Is the outlet open, or is it only appointed or planned?
- After-sales access: Where are maintenance and repairs handled, and how far might a customer need to travel?
- Purchase and delivery: Can a buyer order remotely, and what delivery arrangements are offered?
- Local choice: Which models are available to see, test-drive or obtain in that particular city?
Sales and delivery beyond the showroom
GWM described its Brazilian offering as extending beyond physical sales points. In its January 2025 announcement, the company said GWM Delivery could deliver to any address in Brazil’s 5,570 municipalities, described online purchasing through Mercado Livre, and reported remote workshop services. Those are company descriptions of its offering, not independent assessments of availability or service quality in every location. The announcement provides the company’s account of its network and services.
For a prospective buyer, these options make it important to ask not just where a brand has a sales presence, but how a purchase and later service would work in the buyer’s own city. A store locator can help identify an outlet, but its listing alone does not establish which services that site provides.

How to check a dealer claim before relying on it
- Start with the date. Treat the 2024 and 2025 milestones as historical snapshots rather than current totals.
- Check the definition. Distinguish open dealerships from mall stores, appointed locations and service facilities.
- Verify the specific outlet. Use the automaker’s official locator or contact the location to confirm that it is open and what it can do.
- Confirm service and delivery separately. Ask whether the outlet handles maintenance, what online ordering covers and how delivery works for the intended address.
