For a first Indy 500, decide first whether you want a reserved grandstand seat or the flexibility of general admission, then plan your route and check race-year rules before you leave. The 2027 Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for Sunday, May 30, but gate hours, parking, shuttles and other practical details can change; use Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s official pages for the current event plan.
When is the 2027 Indy 500?
Indianapolis Motor Speedway lists the 2027 Indianapolis 500 for Sunday, May 30. Practice, qualifying, Carb Day and Legends Day are separate Month of May events, not part of the race-day ticket by default. Check the official 2027 calendar as the event approaches for dates and updates. The calendar says 2027 tickets are expected to go on sale in fall 2026; for current purchase status, use the ticket FAQ.
Which ticket should a first-time visitor buy?
| Ticket type | What it includes on race day | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Reserved seat | Admission to the grounds, viewing mounds and a designated grandstand seat. | People who want a specific seat and a predictable grandstand vantage point. |
| General admission | Admission to the grounds and viewing mounds; no designated grandstand seat. | People comfortable choosing among permitted grounds and mound viewing areas. |
Children 15 and under are admitted free to general admission when accompanied by an adult with a paid general-admission ticket. Everyone entering reserved seating needs a seat ticket, regardless of age. Confirm the terms for the event year when purchasing through the IMS ticket FAQ.
How should you choose a seat?
Seat comfort depends on the stand and section, not just the ticket category. Check the official seating map and section information before buying, especially if shade, a seat back, stairs or a particular access route matters.

- Portions of higher-row Penthouse and Box locations are covered.
- H, J, G and all Vista areas are uncovered and have no seat backs.
- Tower Terrace benches have backs.
- Stands are reached by stairs, ramps or elevators in certain locations.
IMS provides accessible seating, parking and facilities. Contact the ticket office with access questions and confirm arrangements for the specific event. Section and accessibility details are available through the official ticket FAQ.
How early should you arrive?
Arrive with enough time for your chosen route, parking or drop-off, walking to the entrance and security screening at pedestrian gates. IMS recommends arriving early. Do not assume a previous year’s opening time applies: the 2026 notice said gates opened at 6 a.m., but that is not confirmation of 2027 hours. Check the current Plan Ahead page before setting out.

Where should you park, and what are the alternatives?
Choose transport before race day and follow the instructions for the specific lot or service. Parking passes identify the lot, and entry and exit directions can differ by lot. Inventory, pricing, road closures and release procedures are time-sensitive, so check the official parking page and directions attached to your pass shortly before travel.
| Option | What to know |
|---|---|
| Onsite parking | Use the assigned lot’s current directions; availability and operational details can change. |
| Shuttle | IMS lists shuttles from the airport and downtown. Check the current schedule, pickup location and fare on the transportation page. |
| Rideshare or taxi | The current IMS page lists race-day drop-off at 10th and Polco. Verify the location and instructions for the event year. |
| Bicycle | The Bike to the 500 commute is an option. Bicycle parking is listed outside Gates 1, 6 and 9; bicycles cannot be taken through the gates. |
Plan for a slow trip out after the race and follow law-enforcement directions. In 2026, IMS said vehicles could be held until pedestrian traffic cleared and drivers could be directed toward the nearest interstate according to their parking quadrant; those are dated procedures, not a confirmed 2027 plan. Current travel details are on the IMS transportation page and parking page.
What should you bring to the Indy 500?
Pack for a long day, but check the rules just before departure. IMS’s published gate regulations allow a hard- or soft-sided cooler no larger than 18 × 15 × 15 inches, food and drinks such as water and soft drinks in non-glass containers, binoculars, scanners, headsets, bags subject to search, and folding or lawn chairs where permitted. The stated cooler maximum comes from IMS’s current gate regulations, accessed October 4, 2026; event rules can change.
- Bring water and snacks in permitted containers. IMS encourages fans to bring refreshments in a cooler.
- Pack only a cooler within IMS’s stated maximum dimensions.
- Review chair and lawn-chair restrictions for the area where you plan to watch.
- Expect bag searches at the gate.
Glass containers, oversized bags, selfie sticks, drones, weapons and coolers above the size limit are prohibited under the published rules. IMS says there are no provisions to check prohibited items at the gates, so leave them behind. Read the latest gate regulations before packing.

How do payments, water and cooling work?
IMS described the 2026 event as cashless, accepting phone tap-to-pay, credit and debit cards; it also listed a cash-to-card machine at Pagoda Plaza. The same 2026 notice listed cooling buses, misting stations and six water-bottle filling stations. These are race-year details, not guaranteed 2027 services or locations. Check the applicable Plan Ahead page for current payment and heat-relief information.
