There is no single Toyota Tacoma MPG number. Fuel economy depends on model year and the exact engine, hybrid system, drivetrain, transmission, cab, bed and trim. For a current reference point, a Cars.com test of a 2026 Tacoma Limited 4×4 Double Cab i-FORCE MAX hybrid calculated 20.7 mpg over 525 mostly highway miles, versus that truck’s EPA-estimated 23 mpg combined. That is a useful real-world example, not a promise for every Tacoma owner.
What MPG does the Toyota Tacoma get?
Start with the rating for the exact truck, then treat it as a comparison estimate rather than a guaranteed result. Toyota’s November 13, 2025 announcement for the 2026 Tacoma gives the standard i-FORCE engine an up to 26 mpg highway rating. The available i-FORCE MAX hybrid is listed at 23 mpg combined. Highway and combined figures describe different test measures, so they should not be compared as though they were the same number.

For a specific 2026 configuration, Cars.com lists the Tacoma Limited 4×4 Double Cab with the 2.4-liter turbocharged i-FORCE MAX hybrid, eight-speed automatic transmission and full-time four-wheel drive at 22 mpg city, 24 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined. Those figures belong to that configuration, not to every Tacoma trim or drivetrain.

A secondary presentation of EPA and Department of Energy data lists 23 mpg as the best combined rating among 2026 gasoline Tacomas and 23 mpg as the best 2026 hybrid rating. It also lists a 24-mpg best hybrid figure for 2024. These are best-rated configurations; an individual vehicle’s official EPA listing and window sticker are the appropriate references.

What a real-world 2026 Tacoma test recorded
Cars.com drove a 2026 Tacoma Limited 4×4 Double Cab i-FORCE MAX on a round trip between Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Chicago. The route was mostly highway with minimal suburban driving. The driver stayed within 5 mph of posted limits, used properly inflated tires, kept the windows closed, ran the climate control automatically with the air conditioning on, and used cruise control on some highway sections.
Overall result
Across 525 miles, the truck used 25.391 gallons. Dividing miles by gallons produced 20.7 mpg. The vehicle’s trip computer displayed 21.6 mpg for the same trip. The difference demonstrates why a fill-up calculation is valuable, but it does not establish that every Tacoma computer has the same error or offset.
Outbound result
The outbound leg covered 274 miles and used 13.614 gallons. The calculated result was 20.1 mpg, while the trip computer showed 19.3 mpg. Both measurements describe that leg under those conditions; neither is a fleet-wide owner average.

The 20.7-mpg result came in below the truck’s 23-mpg combined EPA estimate despite mostly highway travel. That is normal for an estimate designed for standardized comparison. The test included one vehicle, one route, one season and one driving pattern. The available evidence does not provide a representative distribution of MPG results from Tacoma owners, so forum anecdotes or a single road test should not be converted into an “average Tacoma MPG.”

Why your Tacoma’s number may differ
EPA ratings are produced under defined procedures so vehicles can be compared consistently. The agency says test data comes from work at its National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory and from manufacturer-submitted data. EPA revised the city and highway test methods in 2006, with the updated methods applying to 2008 model-year vehicles. The label is an estimate, not a guarantee for a particular route.
Your result can change when the vehicle, route or operating conditions change. Model year, engine, hybrid status, two- or four-wheel drive, transmission, cab and bed configuration, trim, tires, accessories, payload and towing status all matter when comparing two Tacomas. Speed, temperature, terrain and traffic also vary from trip to trip. The available Tacoma-specific sources do not quantify a fixed MPG penalty or gain for any one of those factors, so a precise “minus X mpg” rule would be unsupported.
How to compare two Tacoma MPG claims fairly
Many apparently conflicting numbers are actually ratings for different trucks or different measurement types. Use this checklist before deciding that one Tacoma is more efficient than another:
- Identify the vehicle: record model year, trim, engine, hybrid or gas powertrain, drivetrain, transmission, cab and bed.
- Keep rating types separate: compare city with city, highway with highway and combined with combined.
- Separate ratings from observations: an EPA estimate and a road-test result are not interchangeable.
- Check the measurement: note miles driven and gallons added, not only the dashboard display.
- Describe the route: include city, suburban and highway mix, terrain, weather and speed when those details are known.
- Record load and equipment: list towing, cargo, larger tires, roof or bed accessories and other modifications when relevant.

- Fill the tank to the same practical stopping point and record the odometer or trip miles.
- At the next fill, record the miles driven since the previous fill and the gallons added.
- Divide miles by gallons. For example, 525 miles divided by 25.391 gallons equals 20.7 mpg when rounded to one decimal place.
- Repeat over several tanks and separate highway, mixed and towing use in your notes.
- Compare the resulting number with the EPA city, highway or combined rating that matches your driving, while keeping the vehicle configuration identical.
Resetting a trip computer can help monitor a route, but do not treat its display as a laboratory measurement. In the Cars.com test, the computer read 21.6 mpg while the miles-and-gallons calculation read 20.7 mpg. A paper fuel-economy logbook can help you capture fill-up miles and gallons; it tracks consumption but does not improve it.
What fuel should a 2026 Tacoma use?
Toyota’s 2026 Tacoma owner’s manual specifies unleaded gasoline rated 87 octane (RON 91) or higher. The manual warns that lower octane can cause knocking and recommends detergent additives to help avoid engine deposits. It does not establish that buying higher-octane fuel improves MPG, so premium gasoline should not be presented as an efficiency upgrade based on this guidance.
Use the fuel grade specified for your truck and keep records if you are troubleshooting a change in consumption. If an engine knocks on the specified fuel, have the vehicle inspected rather than assuming a premium fill will solve the underlying problem.

Not every unusual MPG number is a driving problem. A Toyota owner notification hosted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2018 addressed certain 2017 Tacoma TRD Pro vehicles with the manual transmission. Their window stickers contained incorrect highway-MPG and carbon-dioxide values because of a clerical error; the notice said the city and combined estimates were correct.

This is a narrow, dated correction, not evidence of a current Tacoma-wide labeling issue. If a number on your sticker looks inconsistent with the exact vehicle, verify the VIN-specific information and the EPA record rather than relying on a generic search result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the EPA label can—and cannot—tell you
The label’s purpose is comparability. EPA testing uses standardized cycles and reported manufacturer data, and the agency can update a label when relevant evidence indicates that a published figure is too high. The number is therefore useful for comparing similar vehicles under the same system, but it cannot predict every owner’s fuel bill.
For a meaningful expectation, combine the exact window-sticker rating with your own records. A driver who spends nearly every mile on a level highway should compare with the highway figure; a driver mixing short trips, traffic and back roads may find the combined figure more useful. Neither approach turns the estimate into a guarantee.
Common Tacoma MPG questions
Is 20.7 mpg good for a Tacoma hybrid?
It is the observed result from one 2026 Limited 4×4 Double Cab i-FORCE MAX test over 525 mostly highway miles. The same truck carried a 23-mpg combined EPA rating. Whether 20.7 mpg is satisfactory depends on your route, weather, load and driving pattern; the test cannot define a universal owner target.

Why can the trip computer and hand calculation disagree?
The computer and the fill-up method may use different fuel-volume and distance calculations. In the cited test, the display read 21.6 mpg and the calculation read 20.7 mpg. That difference is evidence to check your own records, not proof of a fixed error in every Tacoma.
Should I use premium fuel to get better mileage?
The 2026 manual calls for 87 octane (RON 91) or higher and recommends detergent additives. It does not say that higher octane increases MPG, so there is no manual-based reason to buy premium solely for fuel economy.
What is the best way to compare my Tacoma with another owner’s truck?
Match model year, engine or hybrid system, drivetrain, transmission, cab, bed and trim. Then compare city, highway and combined ratings separately and ask for actual miles, gallons, route mix, load, tires and towing details. Without those details, two MPG claims may not be comparable.
