The Supra began as a Celica-based grand tourer and became a standalone model with the A70 in 1986. The A80 sharpened its sports-car character, while the fifth-generation GR Supra returned as a two-seat coupe. The key differences are lineage, body layout and market-specific powertrains—not a single worldwide specification ladder.
How the five Supra generations compare
This overview combines Toyota UK’s historical account with Toyota Motor Corporation’s Japanese heritage specifications and its 2019 GR Supra launch figures. Engine outputs below are not directly comparable across generations: markets, grades and rating conventions differ.
| Generation | Period and identity | Representative powertrain and output | Other documented details |
|---|---|---|---|
| A40 | Introduced in 1978 as Celica Supra; Celica XX in Japan | Toyota UK describes a six-cylinder range, but specific engine grades and outputs are not stated in its history. | Celica-derived grand tourer; not sold in the UK, according to Toyota UK. |
| A60 | Launched in Japan in July 1981; sold as Celica Supra in export markets | Toyota UK identifies the 2.8-litre 5M-GE twin-cam as a flagship engine; an output figure is not stated there. | Celica-based; independent rear suspension and retractable headlights. |
| A70 | Standalone Supra from February 1986 | Toyota’s Japanese heritage record lists 2.0-litre 1G-GE and 1G-GTE grades and the 3.0-litre 7M-GTEU at 230 PS at 5,600 rpm. | Four-wheel double-wishbone suspension; Toyota UK describes four straight-six choices from 2.0 to 3.0 litres, depending on market. |
| A80 | Fourth generation, introduced in 1993 | Toyota’s Japanese heritage record lists the naturally aspirated 3.0-litre 2JZ-GE at 225 PS and twin-turbo 3.0-litre 2JZ-GTE at 280 PS. | Redesigned 2+2 hatchback coupe; six-speed manual available on the Japanese RZ grade. |
| Fifth generation / GR Supra | Unveiled in 2019 as a two-seat sports coupe | Toyota’s 2019 launch specification lists a 2.998-litre turbo inline-six at 340 PS and 1.998-litre turbo inline-four grades at 258 PS and 197 PS. | Front-engine, rear-wheel drive; all grades in the cited launch table have an eight-speed automatic. |
The A70 and A80 engine grades and figures in Toyota’s heritage records are Japanese specifications. The GR Supra figures are from Toyota’s 2019 launch material, not a statement of 2026 availability or specification in every country. Toyota UK’s history describes the A60 5M-GE as a flagship but does not give an output figure. Torque figures are not stated in these cited records.
What changed from one generation to the next?
A40: a Celica-based grand tourer
Toyota UK describes the original Supra as a grand-tourer-oriented Celica derivative for Japanese and North American markets. Replacing the Celica’s four-cylinder engine range with a six-cylinder and adding a more luxurious character set it apart, but it was not yet the independent sports coupe associated with later Supras.

A60: more emphasis on sporting character
The A60 retained its Celica platform while Toyota gave it a stronger sporting emphasis. Its long wheelbase and stretched nose made room for the straight-six. The Japanese launch and European arrival were not simultaneous: Toyota UK dates the European arrival to August 1982, after the July 1981 Japanese launch.
A70: the Supra becomes independent
The defining change was separation from the Celica line: from February 1986, the Supra name stood on its own in Japan as well as overseas. Toyota UK’s account describes a market-dependent range of four straight-six choices, while Toyota’s heritage record gives representative Japanese grades. Neither set of details should be treated as a universal global lineup.

A80: a lighter 2+2 with two distinct 2JZ choices
Toyota UK says the A80 was 100 kg lighter than its predecessor and offered naturally aspirated or twin-turbo JZ power. The familiar 2JZ designation covers both types, not just the twin-turbo model. Toyota’s Japanese heritage page lists 280 PS for the 2JZ-GTE under Japan’s voluntary power limit; that figure is not a universal export-market rating. Other markets published different outputs and offered different grades.
GR Supra: a two-seat return
The fifth generation changed the cabin layout from the A80’s 2+2 to two seats. Toyota’s 2019 launch specification also paired the inline-six option with two inline-four grades, all turbocharged. Those are launch-era figures and configurations; current equipment and availability need to be checked against the relevant regional model-year specification.

How to read the specification differences fairly
- Match the market and model year. Toyota’s Japanese heritage pages document Japanese grades; Toyota UK’s history describes UK-market chronology and choices; the GR Supra numbers above come from a 2019 launch release.
- Keep output units and rating regimes attached. The cited heritage figures use PS. Do not treat them as a universal ranking against another market’s output figure without matching the rating method and grade.
- Distinguish a range from a representative grade. The A70’s Japanese 1G and 7M entries are examples in Toyota’s heritage record, not a list of every engine sold worldwide.
- Compare configuration as well as power. The line moves from Celica-derived GTs to a standalone coupe, then to the A80 2+2 and the GR Supra two-seater. That change matters as much as the engine badge when deciding which generation suits a buyer or enthusiast.
UK sales and production history
Toyota UK’s generation-specific sales figures are UK totals, not global production counts:
| Generation | Toyota UK sales period | UK sales |
|---|---|---|
| A40 | Not sold in the UK | Not applicable |
| A60 | 1982–1985 | 4,132 |
| A70 | 1986–1993 | 11,551 |
| A80 | 1993–1996 | 623 |
Toyota UK reports 593,337 vehicles produced across the two Celica Supra generations and the standalone Supra generations from April 1978 to July 2002. That is an aggregate for the line, not a per-generation breakdown.

End dates depend on which market and milestone is meant. Toyota UK says A80 sales ended in the UK in 1996, North American sales ended by the close of 1998, and Japanese production continued until July 2002. Toyota’s Japanese heritage page records the domestic final generation’s release in May 1993 and production ending in August 2002. These are different market records, not one worldwide end date.
Motorsport and classic ownership
The A80 competed at Le Mans and in Japan’s GT500 series. Toyota’s heritage page says its motorsport activity continued until 2005; that competition date does not mean A80 production lasted until 2005.

For A70 and A80 owners, Toyota has documented a GR Heritage Parts Project. That establishes a Toyota heritage-parts effort, not current inventory, fitment for every grade, or availability through a particular retailer. For any restoration or replacement part, confirm the generation code, model year and market before relying on a fitment listing.
