The Toyota Tacoma H2-Overlander Concept is a one-off SEMA prototype that pairs a Mirai-derived hydrogen fuel-cell system with battery-electric drive and equipment intended for overlanding. Toyota says it can provide off-grid power and recover water for washing or showering—but it is not a production Tacoma or independently tested rescue vehicle.
How does Toyota’s hydrogen Tacoma work?
In Toyota’s November 3, 2025 announcement, the Tacoma H2-Overlander Concept uses a second-generation Toyota Mirai fuel-cell stack and three hydrogen tanks integrated into the frame rails. Toyota lists their combined capacity as 6 kg. The fuel cell works with a 24.9-kWh lithium-ion battery and two electric motors: a 225-kW front motor and a 188-kW eAxle. Toyota reports 547 horsepower for the pair.
Toyota describes the truck as four-wheel drive, with a front limited-slip differential and a rear electronic locking differential. These are manufacturer-reported concept specifications, not independently verified performance figures. Toyota has not published range, hydrogen consumption, refueling time, or measured off-road results for this vehicle. Toyota USA Newsroom’s announcement is the source for the configuration and specifications.
Can the Tacoma H2-Overlander charge another EV?
Toyota specifies a 15-kW power takeoff and two NEMA 14-50 outlets. The company says the outlets can support demanding off-grid loads or charge two EVs at once, making vehicle-based power a central feature of the concept.

Toyota does not provide an operating test, power-duration figure, or field-rescue result. The announcement therefore establishes the stated outlet capability, not how long the truck could sustain a particular load or how it would perform in a real rescue operation.
Can you drink the water from a hydrogen fuel-cell truck?
No. Toyota says the concept’s patent-pending system captures and filters water from the fuel-cell exhaust, producing water it describes as essentially distilled and suitable for washing and showering. Toyota explicitly says it is not recommended for drinking. The announcement does not provide water-system certification or test results, so the water should not be treated as potable.

What off-road and overlanding equipment does the concept have?
Toyota lists a TRD billet long-travel kit and FOX 2.5 Performance Elite Series shocks adapted from Toyota Tundra suspension development, plus a Tundra front-brake upgrade. Its custom cooling system draws on Tacoma TRD Pro and Lexus RZ components.
The show vehicle also has custom 17×8.5-inch wheels with 35×12.5R17 off-road tires, heavy-duty front and rear bumpers, recovery points, a winch, dual swingouts, tiedowns, recovery-board storage, and specialized DOT-compliant lighting. Toyota does not name the tire maker or model. The size describes this concept’s custom setup; it does not establish fitment for any production Tacoma.

Is the Tacoma H2-Overlander a production truck you can buy?
No production version or retail package is established by Toyota’s announcement. Toyota calls it a “special project prototype vehicle,” developed by TRD engineering teams in California and North Carolina with Toyota Motor North America R&D support. The company said it would be displayed at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas from November 4–7, 2025.
Toyota’s announcement says the vehicle was modified with parts and/or accessories unavailable from Toyota. Its disclaimer warns that modifications may void warranty, negatively affect performance and safety, and may not be street legal. The concept’s equipment is not a production-Tacoma compatibility guide.

What the concept demonstrates—and what remains unknown
The H2-Overlander brings together hydrogen-electric propulsion, off-grid electrical output, water recovery, and custom overlanding hardware in one prototype. Toyota presents it as an experiment in integrating these technologies, not evidence that the configuration is ready for commercial use or has proved its value in rescue work.
Craig Cauthen, manager of TRD’s Emerging Technologies Group, said the team wanted to retain TRD’s off-road heritage and desert-racing theme while incorporating new powertrain technologies. Toyota Marketing group vice president Mike Tripp described the vehicle as part of Toyota’s “multi-pathway approach to carbon neutrality.” Those are Toyota representatives’ descriptions of the project and strategy, not independent findings about emissions or real-world outcomes.

The announcement does not establish production plans, hydrogen-station access, lifecycle emissions, actual range, fuel use, water-system certification, or measured rescue performance. Those questions cannot be answered from the concept specifications alone.
