Toyota, Subaru and Mazda announced separate engine-development efforts on May 28, 2024, aiming for more compact combustion engines designed to work with electrified drivetrains and, in future, alternative carbon-neutral fuels. The announcement describes development goals and technical exhibits—not a retail launch or approval to use alternative fuels in cars already on the road.
What the automakers announced
The three companies said they would develop engines tailored to electrification and carbon neutrality. Their shared direction is to make engines more compact and better integrated with motors, batteries and other electric-drive components, while retaining each manufacturer’s distinct engine identity. They did not announce one joint engine program or a common drivetrain specification. Toyota’s May 28, 2024 announcement describes the effort and its aims.
Toyota said smaller engines could enable lower hoods and create more room for design and aerodynamic improvements, while contributing to better fuel efficiency. The release gives no numerical size, efficiency or performance target, so these are intended benefits rather than measured results.
How the three engine approaches differ
| Automaker | Architecture identified | What the announcement establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Subaru | Horizontally opposed engine | Subaru said it would enhance this engine type with the aim of using carbon-neutral fuels in the future. |
| Toyota | Inline-four engine | Toyota showed its engine as part of its compact-engine development effort. |
| Mazda | Rotary engine | Mazda said its rotary engine was then used for generators and described continued development for the electrification era. |
The manufacturers presented different architectures, not comparable performance data. Their release says the engines are intended to integrate with electrified components, but does not provide a shared system specification that would allow a like-for-like comparison or support ranking one approach over another. The joint announcement identifies the engine types and the companies’ stated aims.

Which alternative fuels are mentioned?
The announcement names e-fuel (synthetic fuel), biofuels and liquid hydrogen. It uses “carbon-neutral fuel” for fuels intended to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions across their lifecycle, from manufacture through use. Toyota’s examples include e-fuel made from hydrogen and CO2 and biofuels derived from biomass. This is the companies’ framing; it is not an independent lifecycle assessment or a guarantee that every production pathway has the same emissions profile. Toyota’s release and Subaru’s release give the fuel list and definition.
The listed fuels are an ambition for engine development, not a fuel-by-fuel compatibility chart. The announcement does not say which specific future engine or vehicle will use each fuel.

Can current Toyota, Subaru or Mazda cars use these fuels?
The 2024 announcement does not establish that current Toyota, Subaru or Mazda vehicles can use e-fuel, biofuel or liquid hydrogen. It provides no general compatibility list, consumer refueling instructions or production launch date. Do not infer approval for a particular vehicle from the development announcement; use only fuels specified for that vehicle by its manufacturer.
What the Expo 2025 demonstration did—and did not—show
A later, specific demonstration provides a limited example of synthetic fuel use. Toyota, Mazda, Subaru, Suzuki and Daihatsu took part in a vehicle plan for Expo 2025, with synthetic fuel supplied by ENEOS. Toyota said the fuel was made at a plant completed in September 2024 and that participating automakers had confirmed it in advance for operation similar to gasoline in the particular vehicles used for the plan. The event ran from April 13 to October 13, 2025, so this was a completed demonstration, not a current public refueling service. Toyota’s April 11, 2025 announcement describes its scope.

The official announcements reviewed do not provide numerical targets for the new engines’ performance, efficiency or emissions, a consumer launch date, or a general list of compatible vehicles. Toyota’s exhibit labels for engine displacement are not performance targets. Until a manufacturer publishes details for a specific production engine and vehicle, the practical takeaway is that these are development commitments—not a new fuel choice for owners today.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- EXPOSED DOHC V8 ARCHITECTURE: This model presents a V8 layout with two angled cylinder banks, four exposed overhead camshafts, dual timing-chain drives, a central intake section, and outward-facing exhaust headers.
