There is no evidence-backed universal ranking of Toyota engines: the best choice depends on whether you value performance, work-ready torque, enthusiast character, durability evidence, or modern efficiency. This editorial ranking compares notable Toyota engines on those axes, while keeping output figures tied to the specific variant and market documented by Toyota.
How this ranking works
This is a reasoned editorial shortlist, not a measured contest or a ranking by failure rate. A sports engine, a pickup engine, and a hybrid powertrain solve different problems. Toyota Netherlands likewise highlights differing priorities such as efficiency, reliability, and performance, while Olathe Toyota Parts Center explicitly calls its own “10 Best” list subjective.
The entries below are grouped by what makes each engine notable rather than forced into a single numeric order. Power figures vary by version, application, year, and market; the cited figures are the ones specified in Toyota Netherlands’ 2025 overview.
Performance and enthusiast character
2JZ-GTE and 2JZ-GE: the straight-six performance benchmark
The 2JZ family is the strongest choice here for a combination of performance potential and engineering legacy. Toyota Netherlands describes the 3.0-liter naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE at 220 PS in standard form, and the Netherlands-market Supra Turbo’s 2JZ-GTE at 330 PS. Those are distinct variants and applications, not a single output range for every 2JZ.

Toyota’s chronology records development of the JZ family in 1990, sequential turbochargers on the 2JZ-GTE in 1991, and VVT-i on the 2JZ-GE in 1995. The family’s place near the top of an enthusiast ranking rests on this documented engineering and performance story, not on a comparative reliability statistic. Toyota Netherlands’ engine overview and Toyota’s engine-development chronology provide the specific figures and milestones.
3S-GTE: turbocharged power with rally credentials
The 3S-GTE earns its place through its connection to Celica GT-Four rally history and the technology Toyota associates with it: twin-entry turbocharging, oil-cooled pistons, and an intercooler. Toyota Netherlands gives 245 PS for the road-going Celica GT-Four example described in its article. Toyota’s chronology records twin-entry turbocharger adoption in 1994.
It is a particularly compelling pick if rally heritage and period turbo engineering matter more to you than a modern efficiency figure. The output belongs to the cited road-car example, not every 3S-GTE application. Toyota Netherlands and Toyota’s chronology document those details.

2ZZ-GE: high-revving four-cylinder character
The 1.8-liter 2ZZ-GE is notable for VVTL-i, Toyota’s variable valve timing and lift system, and the two-stage, high-revving character described by Toyota Netherlands. That article lists the European Celica T Sport at 192 PS and a Corolla T Sport with a mechanical supercharger at 225 PS; the supercharged Corolla figure should not be read as the output of an unmodified 2ZZ-GE in every application. Toyota’s chronology records VVTL-i adoption in 1999.

Its reputation is about character and engineering, not proof of a universal reliability advantage. Toyota Netherlands’ overview lists the European applications and outputs.
4A-GE: a compact classic with broad model history
Toyota Netherlands says the 4A-GE appeared across multiple models from 1980 to 2002 and associates it with the AE86. The 1.6-liter version described there has 16 valves, twin overhead camshafts, and 130 PS in standard trim. Its appeal is a blend of compact-engine design and strong enthusiast identity rather than a claim to lead the list in outright power.

The 130 PS figure applies to the standard-trim version Toyota describes; it should not be generalized to every 4A-GE variant. Toyota Netherlands provides the model history and specification.
Work-ready utility and refinement
22R and 22R-E: low-speed pulling for truck use
The 22R and fuel-injected 22R-E are 2.4-liter four-cylinders associated with Hilux applications. Toyota Netherlands emphasizes their low-rpm pulling strength in work use rather than high-revving power, making them natural picks for utility in this ranking.
Toyota describes the engines as robust and long-lived, but that is not a measured lifespan guarantee. Autoblog identifies plastic timing-chain guides as a weakness for the 22R-E, a practical reminder that condition and maintenance matter when evaluating an older example. Neither source provides an engine-by-engine failure-rate dataset that would prove the 22R-E is more or less reliable than the other engines here. See Toyota Netherlands’ description and Autoblog’s discussion of the timing-chain-guide caveat.

1UZ-FE: smooth V8 power, with repair access to consider
Toyota’s chronology records development of the 1UZ-FE in 1989 and notes hydraulic-fan adoption. Autoblog discusses its use in the first Lexus LS and characterizes it as refined, while also warning that component placement can make some repair work labor-intensive. That distinction matters: refinement is an ownership quality, while repair access can affect the effort involved in maintenance or service.
The available sources do not establish a controlled lifespan statistic for this engine. Autoblog’s headline figure of 500,000 miles is not supported in the article material by a comparable dataset, so it should not be treated as a demonstrated typical lifespan. Toyota’s chronology and Autoblog’s discussion cover the points above.

Can one Toyota engine be called the most reliable?
Not from the evidence available here. The sources reviewed do not provide comparable engine-by-engine failure rates or a named statistical study that would support a definitive reliability ranking. Toyota’s description of the 22R family as robust and Autoblog’s timing-guide caveat for the 22R-E are useful, attributed observations—not a statistical comparison. Reliability for a particular used engine also cannot be inferred from its name alone without accounting for the specific version, service history, condition, and application.
For a buyer choosing between used vehicles, prioritize the exact engine code and vehicle history, then have the individual vehicle inspected. The sources here do not establish a universal mileage lifespan for any engine in this ranking.
