Toyota Stout Compact Pickup Truck: Everything We Know So Far

Toyota is developing a smaller North American pickup, but the Stout name, release date, price, design, and specifications remain unconfirmed. Here is how the rumored truck differs from the Peruvian Hilux Stout and EPU concept.

As of August 9, 2026, Toyota has confirmed that it is developing a smaller pickup for North America—but it has not confirmed the name “Stout,” a release date, pricing, or production specifications. The project is often described online as a Ford Maverick rival, while unofficial renderings frequently present it as a future 2026 or 2027 Toyota Stout. Those details go beyond what Toyota has announced.

There is also a real Toyota Hilux Stout sold in Peru, but that commercial-oriented diesel truck is a different vehicle from the unannounced North American compact pickup.

What Toyota has actually confirmed

On May 22, 2025, Cooper Ericksen, Toyota Motor North America’s senior vice president for product and mobility planning, told MotorTrend that Toyota had decided to develop a smaller pickup truck. He characterized the project as a question of “when,” not “if.”

That is meaningful confirmation of a product program, but it is not confirmation of a production vehicle called the Stout. Toyota has not released an official model page, prototype, final design, or detailed specification sheet for the North American truck.

Toyota’s research reportedly identified potential U.S. demand of approximately 100,000 to 150,000 compact trucks per year. This is an internal market estimate, not a guaranteed sales target or production volume.

Will it really be called the Toyota Stout?

That remains unknown. Toyota has not announced “Stout” as the name of its upcoming U.S. compact pickup.

The name is used in speculation because Toyota has a historical connection to the Stout name and currently sells a Hilux Stout in Peru. That connection makes the name plausible, but it does not make it official. Toyota could choose a completely different name for the North American truck.

For now, “Toyota Stout” is best treated as an unofficial working label used by media outlets, rendering artists, and automotive forums.

What platform could underpin the truck?

Toyota has indicated that the North American compact pickup is expected to use unibody construction and a version of the company’s TNGA architecture. That would distinguish it from the Tacoma and Tundra, which use body-on-frame truck platforms.

A unibody design would make the new vehicle more closely related to a crossover than to a traditional heavy-duty pickup. That approach could improve ride comfort, packaging, efficiency, and manufacturing costs, while still providing an open cargo bed.

In a May 13, 2026 report, Car and Driver said Toyota North America CEO Ted Ogawa described a RAV4-based pickup as an opportunity and acknowledged dealer interest in such a vehicle. This supports the possibility of a RAV4-related foundation, but Toyota has not confirmed that the production truck will use the RAV4 platform.

The current RAV4 uses Toyota’s TNGA-K architecture and is available with hybrid and plug-in-hybrid powertrains. Those systems are possible clues, not confirmed specifications for the pickup.

Hybrid powertrain is likely, but details are missing

Toyota has said the compact truck could use one of its hybrid powertrains. It has not identified the engine, battery pack, electric motors, transmission, output, or fuel-economy rating.

Several configurations remain possible, including a conventional hybrid similar in concept to the RAV4 Hybrid or a plug-in-hybrid system. There is no official confirmation of either option, and Toyota has not said whether the truck will be front-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, or four-wheel drive.

Specification Verified status

Plug-in hybrid Not confirmed

Could the Stout compete with the Ford Maverick?

That is the likely market position, although Toyota has not formally identified a competitor. A compact unibody pickup with an available hybrid system would naturally sit against vehicles such as the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz rather than the larger Tacoma.

The potential appeal would be different from that of a traditional midsize truck. Buyers could get an efficient daily driver with an open bed, easier parking, and a lower step-in height, while giving up some of the Tacoma’s towing, payload, off-road, and rugged-use capability.

It is too early to compare bed dimensions, payload, towing capacity, interior space, or pricing because Toyota has published none of those figures.

The real Toyota Hilux Stout sold in Peru

Toyota Peru sells a production vehicle called the Hilux Stout. It is not merely a concept, but it should not be confused with the rumored North American compact pickup.

The Peruvian model is a commercial-oriented member of the Hilux-family product range. Toyota Peru lists it with a 2.4-liter 2GD turbo-diesel intercooler engine producing 148 horsepower and 35 kg-m of torque. It has a 3,085-mm wheelbase and can be configured for work applications including a chassis, cargo bed, food-truck body, or refrigerated body.

Toyota Peru also identifies the vehicle as compatible with the country’s A1 driving-license classification.

Power 148 hp
Torque 35 kg-m

Primary role Commercial and work use
U.S. availability Not announced

The Peruvian Hilux Stout is associated with Toyota’s global IMV 0/Hilux Champ family and uses a diesel commercial-vehicle configuration. The North American project described by Toyota executives is expected to use a unibody, TNGA-related approach and could use hybrid power. Toyota has not announced plans to import the Peruvian truck to the United States.

What about the Toyota EPU concept?

The EPU is another vehicle frequently mislabeled as the future Stout. Toyota unveiled the EPU concept on October 26, 2023, but did not call it the Stout or confirm it for production.

Toyota described the EPU as a mid-size battery-electric pickup concept with monocoque construction, five-passenger seating, and a double-cab body. Its published dimensions were:

  • Length: 5,070 mm
  • Width: 1,910 mm
  • Height: 1,710 mm
  • Wheelbase: 3,350 mm

The EPU may demonstrate Toyota’s thinking about electric pickup design, but there is no verified connection between that concept and the planned North American compact truck. Calling the EPU the confirmed production Stout is unsupported.

Release date and expected model year

Toyota had not set a final timetable in the 2025 confirmation. Ericksen said the company would not show a prototype or concept during 2025 and suggested that 2026 could also be too soon.

As a result, claims that a “2026 Toyota Stout” has already been released—or that a “2027 Stout” has been confirmed—are not supported by Toyota’s announcements. The company’s current U.S. 2026 lineup lists the Tacoma and Tundra but does not list a Stout.

Until Toyota announces a reveal, production plan, or on-sale date, any model-year prediction should be considered speculation.

Price, trims, dimensions, and capacity

Toyota has not announced a U.S. starting price. Online claims of a $10,000 Toyota Stout generally mix speculation about low-cost global commercial trucks such as the Hilux Champ/IMV 0 with the separate North American development program. A $10,000 U.S. compact pickup is not a confirmed Toyota plan.

What to watch for next

  1. An official name: Toyota must confirm whether the Stout name will be used at all.
  2. A concept or prototype: An official reveal would establish the design direction and approximate size.
  3. Platform confirmation: Toyota may clarify whether the truck is RAV4-related or uses another TNGA-based architecture.
  4. Powertrain details: The company will eventually need to identify hybrid, plug-in-hybrid, gasoline, or electric options.
  5. U.S. production and pricing: These details will determine whether the vehicle can compete directly with the Maverick and Santa Cruz.

Common claims checked

Claim What the evidence shows

“Online renderings show the final truck.” No official production exterior or interior has been released.

FAQ

Is Toyota making a compact pickup truck for the U.S.?

Yes. Toyota has confirmed that it decided to develop a smaller North American pickup. It has not announced the model’s final name, design, specifications, price, or release date.

Will the new Toyota compact pickup be called Stout?

Toyota has not confirmed that name. “Stout” is an unofficial label frequently used because Toyota previously sold a Stout truck and currently sells a Hilux Stout in Peru.

Is the Toyota Hilux Stout coming to the United States?

Toyota has not announced U.S. availability for the Peruvian Hilux Stout. That diesel commercial truck is separate from the planned North American unibody pickup.

Is the Toyota EPU the new Stout?

No confirmed connection exists. The EPU is a mid-size battery-electric pickup concept unveiled in 2023, and Toyota has not said it will become the Stout or any U.S. production truck.

The Bottom Line

Toyota is developing a smaller pickup for North America, and a unibody TNGA-based design with hybrid capability appears possible. But the company has not confirmed the Stout name, a RAV4 platform, a 2026 or 2027 launch, U.S. pricing, or any performance figures. The Peruvian Hilux Stout and the EPU concept are real Toyota products, but neither is proof of what the future American truck will be.
