Choose the 2026 Honda Odyssey if you value a stronger published horsepower figure, highly movable second-row seats, and substantially more maximum cargo volume. Both seat up to eight, but they serve different kinds of family use.
The Sienna is hybrid-only and Toyota lists 245 total system horsepower with manufacturer-estimated combined fuel economy of 36 mpg for front-wheel drive (FWD) and 35 mpg for all-wheel drive (AWD). Honda lists a 280-hp V-6, a 10-speed automatic, and 19 city/28 highway mpg for the Odyssey. The right purchase depends on your annual mileage, weather, seating routine, cargo configuration, and the equipment included in the exact trims you compare.

2026 Sienna vs. Odyssey at a glance
| Decision | 2026 Toyota Sienna | 2026 Honda Odyssey | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Powertrain | Hybrid system; 245 total system hp | 280-hp V-6 with 10-speed automatic | Honda publishes more horsepower, but a test drive with your family and typical load is the only way to judge responsiveness. |
| Published fuel economy | Manufacturer-estimated 36 mpg combined FWD; 35 mpg combined AWD | 19 city/28 highway mpg on Honda’s model page | The Sienna has the clear published efficiency advantage. Use current labels and your local fuel price for a household estimate. |
| Drivetrain | FWD and AWD versions are listed | Honda’s trim information identifies Snow mode; no AWD version is listed there | Sienna is the sourced choice if minivan AWD is essential. |
| Seating | Up to eight occupants | Up to eight occupants | Bring your actual child seats and check access to both rear rows. |
| Maximum cargo capacity | 101.0 cu. ft. | 155.8 cu. ft. | These figures come from Honda’s manufacturer comparison; usable space depends on seat position and configuration. |
| Starting MSRP | $40,120 for LE FWD, Toyota newsroom listing | $42,795 for EX-L, Honda model-page listing | These are different trims and are not like-for-like prices. |
For the cargo figures, Honda’s 2026 Odyssey versus 2026 Toyota Sienna comparison is the source. Honda also calls the Odyssey its “champion of minivans” in that document; that is Honda’s marketing opinion, not an independent test result.
Powertrains: hybrid efficiency versus V-6 output
Sienna: one hybrid powertrain across the lineup
Toyota’s 2026 Sienna specification page describes a hybrid-only lineup. Toyota’s newsroom reports 245 total system horsepower for the hybrid system. There is no conventional gasoline-only Sienna configuration in the published 2026 material, so shoppers who specifically want a non-hybrid engine should look elsewhere.

Toyota lists both FWD and AWD versions. AWD adds a useful choice for buyers who regularly encounter snow, steep driveways, or unpaved access roads, although it does not replace winter tires, adequate tread, or prudent driving.
See Toyota’s trim and equipment details on the official 2026 Sienna Full Specs page. Toyota notes that equipment and availability can vary by region.
Odyssey: naturally aspirated V-6 and 10-speed automatic
Honda’s 2026 Odyssey page lists a 280-hp V-6 paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. That is a higher published horsepower figure than the Sienna’s 245-system-hp rating, but horsepower numbers alone do not establish acceleration with eight occupants, a roof box, or a loaded trailer. Drive both vans in the conditions that matter to you, including highway merging and moderate grades.
Honda lists Snow mode in its equipment information. The sourced 2026 trim listing does not show an AWD option, so confirm drivetrain availability on the exact vehicle and window sticker in your area before assuming it meets a winter-driving requirement.
Fuel economy and the cost question
What the published numbers say
Toyota reports manufacturer-estimated fuel economy of 36 mpg combined for FWD Sienna models and 35 mpg combined for AWD models. Those are Toyota estimates; verify the official EPA label for the specific vehicle before treating them as certified ratings.
Honda’s 2026 Odyssey page lists 19 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. The page’s displayed search result does not establish a combined figure, so use the live Honda page and the vehicle’s window sticker for the exact certification and combined rating.

Calculate your own annual fuel spending
A useful comparison requires your mileage and local gasoline price rather than a generic payback claim. For each van, divide annual miles by the applicable combined mpg, then multiply by your local price per gallon. Use the Sienna’s FWD or AWD estimate that matches the vehicle you would actually buy, and use the Odyssey’s official label for its combined figure.
- Record your realistic annual miles, including school runs, commuting, vacations, and weekend driving.
- Get the current gasoline price you normally pay.
- Apply the official combined rating for each exact trim and drivetrain.
- Compare the resulting annual fuel totals with the actual written purchase quotes, including destination, dealer charges, accessories, financing, and incentives.
Do not promise a fuel-savings payback period without those inputs. Driving style, temperatures, payload, tire pressure, traffic, and fuel prices can materially change the result.
AWD, snow and everyday traction
The Sienna is the straightforward choice for shoppers who require a minivan offered with AWD. Toyota publishes both FWD and AWD versions and shows a one-mpg difference in its combined estimates: 36 mpg for FWD and 35 mpg for AWD.
The Odyssey information reviewed here identifies Snow mode but does not list an AWD variant. If your household regularly travels mountain passes or roads that remain unplowed, ask the dealer to confirm the drivetrain on the exact Odyssey stock number rather than relying on a general model description.
AWD helps distribute power; it does not shorten braking distances on ice. Select winter-rated tires when conditions warrant, maintain them properly, and leave room for changing weather.

Honda’s comparison lists seating for up to eight in both vehicles, and Honda’s Odyssey page also states seating for eight. The number of usable positions depends on the selected trim and second-row arrangement. Before signing, install every child seat you use, check tether access, and have the people who normally sit in the third row try entering and exiting.

Odyssey Magic Slide second-row seats
Honda describes its Magic Slide second-row seats as moving to improve third-row access. Honda also says the seats can fold flat for removal. That can be valuable when adults regularly enter the third row or when you alternate between passengers and bulky cargo. Confirm the exact configuration by trim and practice the removal process at the dealership; a feature is only useful if your household can operate it comfortably and store the removed seat safely.
Sienna second-row arrangements
Toyota offers different second-row arrangements depending on trim. Check the chosen Sienna’s specification sheet for the number of seats, the type of second-row seat, and how far it moves or folds. Test the configuration you will use most often rather than judging the entire Sienna range from a different trim.
Cargo space: maximum numbers versus usable space
Honda’s manufacturer comparison lists maximum cargo capacity of 155.8 cubic feet for the Odyssey and 101.0 cubic feet for the Sienna. These are Honda-provided comparison figures, not an independent measurement, and the maximum assumes particular seat positions. Honda presents the result as an Odyssey advantage; treat that conclusion as the manufacturer’s claim.

For a real-world decision, bring the stroller, sports equipment, cooler, musical instruments, or mobility aids you carry. Try the setup with the third row in its normal passenger position, with one side folded, and with the second row configured for your family. Measure whether the liftgate opening and floor height work for your heaviest items; a larger maximum volume does not guarantee easier loading.
Pricing: compare equipment, not just the headline MSRP
Sienna starting price
Toyota’s newsroom lists a 2026 Sienna LE FWD starting MSRP of $40,120. The figure excludes dealer processing and handling and is a starting list price, not a guaranteed transaction price. It does not represent every trim, an AWD model, or a vehicle with options.

Because the Sienna figure is for an LE FWD and the Odyssey figure is for an EX-L, the two numbers do not compare equivalent equipment. Build a shortlist of features you actually need—such as AWD, a rear entertainment system, or a particular seat layout—then price similarly equipped vehicles.
Use out-the-door quotes
Ask each dealer for an itemized, date-stamped quote showing selling price, destination, dealer fees, accessories, taxes, registration, financing assumptions, and incentives. Compare the total amount financed or paid, not only the advertised MSRP. Incentives and inventory change, and no independent transaction-price dataset establishes a typical discount for either model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Entertainment and convenience equipment
Equipment is trim-dependent, so model-level claims can mislead. Honda’s manufacturer comparison states that a rear entertainment system is an extra-cost option on Sienna XLE and higher trims, while the Odyssey lists rear entertainment as standard on Touring and Elite. Confirm whether the actual vehicle has the screen, headphones, controls, and connectivity your passengers expect.
Honda lists CabinWatch and CabinTalk as standard on Touring and Elite. CabinWatch provides a view of the rear seating area, while CabinTalk is intended to let the driver address rear passengers through the vehicle’s audio system. Verify operation and availability on the trim you are considering.
Compare USB ports, charging locations, phone integration, climate controls, and storage in person. A family may value easy-to-reach second-row controls more than a higher count of headline features.

Safety equipment and what is not established
Manufacturer-described systems
Toyota says every 2026 Sienna includes Toyota Safety Sense 2.0. Honda describes Honda Sensing, including Collision Mitigation Braking System, Road Departure Mitigation, adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, and lane-keeping assist.
These are manufacturers’ descriptions of equipment and intended system functions. Availability, calibration, and operation can vary by trim and conditions, and no driver-assistance system removes the need for attentive driving.
Crash-test ratings
Comparable 2026 IIHS or NHTSA crash-test results for both vans were not established in the available official material. Do not declare one a safety winner on the basis of feature names alone. Check the official IIHS and NHTSA databases for the exact model year and configuration before purchase, because ratings and test coverage can change as agencies publish results.

A practical test-drive and buying checklist
- Confirm the identity. Write down model year, trim, drivetrain, seating configuration, and vehicle identification number. Make sure the window sticker matches the online listing.
- Bring your child seats. Install rear-facing and forward-facing seats in the positions you normally use. Check buckle access, tether routing, front-seat legroom, and third-row entry.
- Load your gear. Bring a stroller, sports bag, cooler, or other bulky item. Test the liftgate, floor height, seat folding, and visibility with the third row occupied.
- Drive under load. If possible, test highway merging, a hill, low-speed maneuvering, and parking. Note noise, pedal response, braking feel, turning radius, and sight lines rather than relying on horsepower figures.
- Test the climate and electronics. Have each passenger try the controls and charging points. Check rear entertainment, CabinWatch, CabinTalk, and phone pairing when those features are included.
- Evaluate winter needs. Confirm whether the Sienna is FWD or AWD, what tires are installed, and whether the Odyssey’s equipment meets your local requirements. Snow mode is not equivalent to AWD.
- Get comparable quotes. Request itemized out-the-door pricing for similarly equipped vans, including destination, dealer charges, accessories, taxes, registration, financing, and current incentives.
- Verify ownership details. Confirm maintenance intervals, warranty terms, accessory fitment, and insurance costs with your providers. Do not assume one model is cheaper to insure without vehicle-specific quotes.
Accessories and fitment details
Family use often means mud, spilled drinks, and repeated loading. Toyota’s 2026 brochure says its floor liner is designed specifically for that model year. Check the exact Sienna trim and drivetrain before ordering because a liner that fits one configuration may not fit another. The brochure is available as the 2026 Sienna Brochure.
Honda lists Odyssey all-season floor mats and a molded vinyl trifold cargo mat intended to protect the cargo area. Confirm model-year fitment, seat configuration, and whether the mat can remain folded when the third row is in use. Accessories are separate purchases and should appear as line items in the quote.
Which minivan should you buy?
Choose the Sienna when these priorities dominate
- You drive enough annual miles for fuel consumption to be a major household cost.
- You want a hybrid-only powertrain and the published 36-mpg FWD or 35-mpg AWD estimate is attractive.
- You need the option of minivan AWD.
- Your preferred Sienna trim provides the seating and entertainment equipment you actually use.
Choose the Odyssey when these priorities dominate
- You prefer its 280-hp V-6 and 10-speed automatic after a loaded test drive.
- Magic Slide second-row movement or removable seats make third-row access and cargo changes easier for your family.
- You regularly use a passenger-and-cargo layout where the Odyssey’s Honda-listed 155.8-cu.-ft. maximum is useful.
- The EX-L or a higher trim includes the convenience and entertainment equipment you want at a better written local quote.
Neither vehicle is the universal winner. Price the same equipment, test the actual seat and cargo setup, and base fuel expectations on official labels and your own mileage. The Sienna is the more compelling efficiency-and-AWD choice; the Odyssey is the more compelling seat-flexibility-and-maximum-cargo choice.
