What the Toyota Sienna Pop Top is—and is not
Unicamp USA developed the Sienna roof with Caleche Customs after the companies worked together on a pop-top for the Kia Carnival. New Atlas reported the Sienna version on January 10, 2024, saying customer interest helped prompt the project. The conversion raises a second-story sleeping space above the cabin, allowing the Sienna to remain a passenger van for everyday use.
That distinction matters when comparing it with a camper conversion that rearranges or removes interior seating to make room for beds, storage, or other amenities. The Sienna Pop Top’s reported appeal is the extra sleeping area without giving up the factory passenger cabin; the available launch report does not establish a complete in-vehicle camper package for the Sienna. Does the pop-top keep the Sienna’s seats?
Yes. The launch report said the conversion retained the Sienna’s seven- or eight-seat cabin, depending on the vehicle configuration. That makes it a different proposition from an interior camper build that trades passenger seats for a permanent bed or living area. The report does not specify whether every seating configuration has identical fitment or installation requirements, so confirm compatibility for the exact van before arranging a conversion.

How the roof and upstairs bed were reported to work
The launch coverage described an electrically operated roof controlled with the Sienna’s original key fob. The reinforced thermoset-plastic roof opens to expose a tented upper sleeping space with a double bed. New Atlas reported a bed capacity of about 500 lb (226 kg); this is a published product figure, not an independently verified load test.
- Opening and closing: Electric operation, including electric closing, was reported.
- Manual backup: The report said the roof could be operated manually if the electrical system failed.
- Contact sensing: Sensors were said to stop roof operation if they detected contact with an external object.
These are features as reported at launch, not independently tested findings. A prospective buyer should ask the installer how the safety sensors, manual backup, and operating procedure apply to the specific vehicle and what maintenance or service is required.

What model years fit?
In January 2024, the companies said the roof was available for fourth-generation Toyota Siennas from model year 2021 onward. The report also said work was underway on a retrofit for older models. That described development at the time; it does not confirm that an older-model retrofit is now available, or that current fitment remains unchanged. Verify the exact model year and configuration directly with the seller or installer before making plans.
What did it cost in the 2024 launch report?
New Atlas reported a US$16,000 price for the electric roof package with the bed and tent, with installation at Caleche Customs’ Henderson, Nevada headquarters. It said the companies were pursuing additional installation locations. The article also estimated that a new 2024 Sienna plus the roof package would cost more than US$55,000, based on vehicle prices reported at that time.

Those are historical launch figures, not current quotes. Current package pricing, ordering arrangements, installation locations, taxes, and any additional charges are not established by that report. Ask for an up-to-date written quote and confirm what the package and installation include before comparing it with other conversion options.
Is it a full camper conversion?
No—not based on the product description in the launch coverage. The reported Unicamp Sienna offering adds an upper sleeping area; it was not presented as a complete interior camper layout with a kitchen, storage system, or other built-in living amenities. New Atlas noted that buyers seeking more of a mini-camper could look at third-party Sienna camper kits and conversions, but did not identify or verify any particular kit.

What kind of Sienna buyer might consider it?
The design fits a buyer who wants to carry the usual passenger load and gain a place to sleep on occasional trips, rather than permanently converting the cabin into a camper. It may be less suitable for someone who needs cooking, substantial storage, or an interior living setup, since those were not part of the Sienna product described in the launch report.
The same 2024 article described the Sienna as a hybrid minivan with optional all-wheel drive, reporting 245 hp from its 2.5-liter hybrid system and EPA estimates of 36 mpg combined or 35 mpg with AWD. These are publication-era vehicle figures, not current buying guidance; check current official Toyota specifications and fuel-economy information for the specific model year. The report positioned AWD as useful for varied road conditions, while distinguishing the Sienna from more serious off-road vehicles.
