Not based on the ratings alone. 89H and 91H share the same H speed symbol, but 91H has a higher load index. Whether a 91H tire can replace or be mixed with an 89H tire depends on your vehicle’s specified tire size, ratings, axle setup and drivetrain. Check the tire placard and owner’s manual before fitting or mixing them.
What 89H and 91H mean
The number is the tire’s load index; the letter is its speed symbol. Michelin lists load index 89 as a maximum rated load of 580 kg per tire and 91 as 615 kg per tire. Both carry an H speed symbol, which Michelin describes as a maximum speed rating of 210 km/h under specified conditions. That rating is not a guarantee that driving at that speed is safe in all conditions. Michelin’s guide to tire load and speed ratings
| Marking | Load index | Rated load per tire | Speed symbol |
|---|---|---|---|
| 89H | 89 | 580 kg | H |
| 91H | 91 | 615 kg | H |
These figures are Michelin’s published rating values; the page does not state a publication year. A higher load index does not by itself establish that the tire is suitable for your vehicle.
Can you replace an 89H with a 91H?
Possibly, but only if the complete tire specification and your vehicle’s requirements allow it. Michelin recommends replacement tires that match the vehicle manufacturer’s specified dimensions and load rating, and says required load and speed ratings should be met or exceeded. Compare the full tire size and construction—not just “89H” or “91H”—with the placard and owner’s manual. Michelin’s replacement guidance

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you mix 89H and 91H tires on the same car?
Michelin advises against mixing tires with different ratings and recommends consistent specifications. Its published guidance does not support treating 89H and 91H as automatically interchangeable just because they share the H symbol. If you are considering different ratings, get vehicle-specific guidance before installation.

Michelin’s placement instructions are not identical across its cited guidance: the Canada FAQ says tires matching in size, type and speed rating should be on the same axle, while its U.S. guidance says lower-speed-rated tires should go on the front axle when speed ratings differ. Neither placement statement should be treated as a universal rule. Follow your vehicle maker’s instructions and confirm the right arrangement for your vehicle. If you are replacing only two tires
Michelin USA says that, when replacing only two tires, the new tires should match the existing tires in size and type and be installed on the rear axle. Check your vehicle’s instructions as well, especially for AWD or 4WD, where the owner’s manual may specify additional requirements.
