Toyota lists 437 hp and 583 lb-ft from the Sequoia’s i-FORCE MAX twin-turbo V6 hybrid and up to 9,500 lb of towing on its current product page. Ford’s 2026 U.S. technical sheet lists 9,300 lb for Expedition Tremor, 10.6 inches of ground clearance and substantially more published cargo volume. Neither maximum towing nor a trim badge tells you how much expedition equipment the finished vehicle can safely carry, so the final decision should be based on the exact vehicle’s payload label, tire fitment, seat layout and route.
The short answer for overlanders
Choose the Sequoia TRD Pro if your trips emphasize rough tracks, ledges, loose surfaces and a factory suspension package designed for off-road control. Toyota describes the trim with 2.5-inch FOX internal-bypass coil-overs, rear remote-reservoir shocks, a selectable locking rear differential, Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control and Downhill Assist Control. Its i-FORCE MAX hybrid produces 437 hp and 583 lb-ft, which gives the Sequoia a strong power reserve for climbing and highway travel with a loaded vehicle.

Choose the Expedition Tremor if your overland layout needs the largest possible cargo envelope, three usable rows or a published clearance and geometry specification. Ford’s 2026 Tremor equipment list includes standard Intelligent 4WD with Terrain Management, a 3.73 electronic-locking differential, Trail Control and 33-inch all-terrain tires. Ford’s U.S. technical sheet lists 10.6 inches of ground clearance, a 28.2-degree approach angle, 24.3-degree departure angle and 22.4-degree breakover angle.

These are manufacturer equipment and specification claims, not independent trail-performance tests. The right vehicle depends on how many people and how much water, food, recovery equipment and shelter you carry, whether you tow, and how often your route demands body clearance rather than interior volume.

What the two off-road trims actually include
Sequoia TRD Pro: suspension and selectable control
Toyota’s 2026 Sequoia product page identifies the TRD Pro’s i-FORCE MAX powertrain output and model information. Toyota’s TRD Pro information describes 2.5-inch FOX internal-bypass coil-overs at the front and rear remote-reservoir shocks. Those components are intended to control wheel movement and heat during demanding off-road use, but the specification alone does not prove a particular ride quality or trail speed.
The same Toyota model information lists a selectable locking rear differential, Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control and Downhill Assist Control for TRD Pro. A locking differential can help both rear wheels receive usable torque when one has limited traction; the electronic modes can reduce the amount of throttle and brake modulation the driver must manage on uneven ground. Treat these systems as aids, not substitutes for line choice, tire pressure management and recovery planning.
Expedition Tremor: a complete factory package
Ford Canada’s 2026 Expedition Tremor page lists standard Intelligent 4WD with Terrain Management, a 3.73 electronic-locking differential, Trail Control and 33-inch all-terrain tires. The package gives the large Expedition a factory-oriented route into loose surfaces and moderate technical terrain without requiring an immediate suspension or tire conversion.
Ford’s information is regional: the equipment page is Canadian, while the detailed dimensions and towing data below come from Ford’s U.S. 2026 technical document. Availability, standard equipment and certification can differ by country, so a buyer outside those markets should verify the local build sheet.
Power and towing: useful, but not a payload answer
Sequoia’s hybrid output
Toyota lists the 2026 Sequoia i-FORCE MAX twin-turbo V6 hybrid at 437 hp and 583 lb-ft. The product page gives a maximum towing headline of up to 9,500 lb. Toyota’s July 22, 2025 model-year release reports up to 9,520 lb, a small source-to-source difference that should not be silently rounded into one universal rating. Use the exact vehicle’s certification and hitch information when matching a trailer; the trim, axle ratio, wheels, tires, passengers and installed accessories all affect the permitted load.

Expedition Tremor’s towing figure
Ford’s 2026 U.S. technical sheet lists 9,300 lb maximum towing for Expedition Tremor. Ford states that towing depends on configuration, cargo, accessories and passengers. A trailer’s tongue weight becomes part of the SUV’s payload, so a high tow rating does not mean you can fill the cabin and roof with expedition equipment at the same time.

For either SUV, calculate the complete travel load before choosing a trailer: occupants, coolers, water, fuel containers, recovery boards, tools, spare parts, rooftop equipment and tongue weight all consume available payload. If your itinerary is trailer-free, towing capacity should have little influence on the decision.
Clearance and obstacle geometry
What Ford publishes for Tremor
Ford’s 2026 Expedition technical specifications list, in the Tremor 4×4 column, 10.6 inches of ground clearance, a 28.2-degree approach angle, a 24.3-degree departure angle and a 22.4-degree breakover angle. These numbers describe the specified configuration and are most useful when comparing the same tire size, wheel package and loading condition.
Why the Sequoia number needs caution
Toyota’s 2026 comparison tool returns 8.6 inches for a Sequoia configuration. The retrieved tool result does not identify that measurement as TRD Pro-specific, so it should not be presented as a matched comparison with Tremor’s 10.6 inches. Suspension compression, tire diameter, skid plates, fuel load and cargo can change the lowest point in real use.
Before buying, inspect the exact vehicle from the side and underneath. Identify the differential housing, running boards, hitch receiver, exhaust and any factory protection as potential contact points. A larger published approach angle helps only if the front bumper and tire reach the obstacle first; a roof load does not improve breakover clearance and raises the center of gravity.

Read the exact tire-and-loading label
Open the driver’s door and photograph the tire-and-loading information on the SUV you are considering. Use its stated occupants-and-cargo limit as the starting point, then subtract:
- Every passenger, including children and the driver.
- Water, food, cooking fuel and coolers.
- Recovery boards, winch equipment, compressor, tools and spare parts.
- Roof racks, awnings, tents, drawers, refrigerators and auxiliary batteries.
- The trailer’s loaded tongue weight if you tow.
Weigh the completed vehicle with the people and supplies aboard, ideally by axle. A suspension upgrade can improve control or clearance, but it does not automatically increase the legal payload or the rating of the tires, wheels, axles and brakes.
Cargo layout: measure the camp you actually carry
Ford publishes the largest cargo figures in the supplied specifications: 108.5 cu. ft. behind row one, 69.9 behind row two and 22.9 behind row three for the 2026 Tremor. That gives a family the option of keeping a row available while reserving a defined volume for equipment, although the third-row figure is a small space for bulky cases.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Toyota lists 86.9 cu. ft. maximum cargo space with the rear seats folded for Sequoia. This is not the same measurement description as Ford’s three-position figures, so the numbers should not be treated as a laboratory-equivalent contest. Compare the floor length, opening height and width with your actual cases, sleeping platform and cooler.
A practical packing test
- Measure the longest rigid item you will carry, such as a recovery board, folding table or storage box.
- Measure the width between the wheel wells and the height to the closed liftgate.
- Decide whether all passengers need their seats in place during travel; a vehicle that is spacious with row three folded may be less useful when that row is occupied.
- Place the heaviest items low and between the axles. Keep recovery equipment accessible without unloading the entire vehicle.
- Leave a protected area for wet or dirty gear so sleeping equipment and food remain clean.
Use the cargo volume figures as a screening tool, then perform this physical fit test at a dealer. Overlanding storage systems can consume more usable room than their catalog dimensions suggest once hinges, tie-downs and access paths are included.
Tires: do not transfer a specification from another Toyota
Ford specifies 33-inch all-terrain tires for Expedition Tremor. That is a direct Tremor specification in Ford’s Canadian model information.

Toyota’s TRD Pro Series page lists 33-inch Toyo all-terrain tires for the 4Runner TRD Pro, not for the Sequoia TRD Pro. The retrieved Sequoia information describes its wheels and suspension but does not state a Sequoia TRD Pro tire size. Do not order 33-inch tires for a Sequoia based on the 4Runner listing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteVerify fitment before changing tires
- Read the tire size, load index and speed rating on the Sequoia’s door placard and original sidewall.
- Confirm wheel width, offset, brake clearance and spare-tire dimensions with current fitment documentation.
- Check that the replacement tire’s load capacity supports the vehicle’s axle ratings when fully loaded.
- Test full steering lock and suspension compression for rubbing before a remote trip.
- Carry a repair plan: compressor, plug kit appropriate to the tire, pressure gauge and a spare that matches the loaded vehicle’s needs.
Larger or more aggressive tires may add clearance and traction but can change gearing, steering feel, braking performance, noise, fuel use and the space available for a full-size spare. A tire that fits the wheel opening unloaded may contact suspension or bodywork when the vehicle is flexed and carrying camp gear.

A buyer’s inspection and build sequence
1. Lock the exact configuration
Write down model year, trim, drivetrain, wheel and tire package, seating layout and factory options. Do not combine a Sequoia TRD Pro suspension claim with a tire size listed for another Toyota model, and do not assume Canadian Tremor equipment is identical to a U.S. vehicle.
2. Photograph the labels and paperwork
Record the tire-and-loading label, certification label, axle information, hitch label and owner’s manual towing tables. Keep the window sticker so later accessory decisions can be checked against the delivered vehicle rather than a generic brochure.
3. Mock up the load
Use filled water containers, food bins, recovery gear and the intended roof equipment to create a realistic load. Weigh individual components before installation; a drawer system, roof tent or auxiliary battery can consume payload faster than expected.

What the published sources do—and do not—prove
Toyota’s current product page is a 2026 source for Sequoia output and its rounded towing headline. Toyota’s July 2025 newsroom release is also a 2026 source and gives the slightly different 9,520-lb maximum. The safest practice is to quote the source-specific value and then verify the rating for the vehicle identification number or window sticker.
Toyota’s detailed comparison article at Toyota’s 2024 Sequoia-versus-Expedition page is for model year 2024. Its 2024 power, fuel-economy, dimension and drivetrain figures should not be carried into a 2026 buying decision. It describes a 4WD Sequoia using part-time 4WD with a two-speed transfer case, but current model-year documentation should be consulted before relying on operating details.
Toyota’s full-size SUV page at Toyota Full-size SUVs and the July 2025 release at Toyota USA Newsroom are useful for current model-year context. Ford’s technical sheet is a U.S. document, while the Tremor equipment page is Canadian. A buyer in another country should confirm local certification, standard equipment, tire sizes and towing limits with that market’s manufacturer documentation.
Final verdict
The Sequoia TRD Pro is the better factory starting point for an overlander who values Toyota’s stated off-road control hardware and the 437-hp, 583-lb-ft i-FORCE MAX hybrid, and who can keep the build’s weight and storage demands under control. The Expedition Tremor is the better fit for a family-oriented or equipment-heavy plan that benefits from published 10.6-inch clearance, 33-inch all-terrain tires and the larger measured cargo envelope.
Make the final choice only after checking the exact vehicle’s payload label, tire and spare specifications, seat position and local-market equipment. Build the load, weigh it, and compare the route’s real obstacles with the vehicle’s geometry. That process is more reliable than choosing by the highest tow number or by assuming a tire or clearance figure from a different trim.
