For the 2025 model year, the Toyota Sequoia has the higher advertised maximum tow rating: up to 9,520 pounds, compared with the Chevrolet Tahoe’s 8,400 pounds in its highest-rated configuration. That is a comparison of maximums, not a promise that every Sequoia can tow more than every Tahoe—or that either SUV can tow that much once loaded with passengers, cargo and options.
For a 2026 purchase, the available official information here does not establish a complete, like-for-like towing comparison across both models’ configurations. Use the exact model-year towing guide, vehicle labels and owner’s manual before choosing based on a specific trailer.

2025 tow ratings: the Sequoia has the higher maximum
Toyota lists a maximum towing capacity of 9,520 pounds for the 2025 Sequoia. GM’s 2025 Tahoe specifications list maximum trailering ratings from 8,000 to 8,400 pounds, depending on engine and drivetrain. On those model-year maximums, the Sequoia leads by 1,120 pounds over the Tahoe’s top listed figure.
That headline comparison has limits: the Tahoe’s rating changes by configuration, and the 9,520-pound Sequoia figure is its maximum, not a rating that should be assumed for every trim. Compare the exact year and build rather than treating either maximum as universal. Toyota’s 2025 announcement gives the Sequoia figure in its 2025 Sequoia release; GM’s configuration-specific figures appear in its 2025 Tahoe and Suburban announcement.

2025 Chevrolet Tahoe ratings by engine and drivetrain
GM separates standard trailering ratings from maximum trailering ratings. All figures below are pounds and apply to the 2025 configurations listed in GM’s specifications; they are not 2026 ratings.
| Engine and drivetrain | Standard trailering | Maximum trailering | Maximum payload |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5.3L, 2WD | 7,900 | 8,400 | 1,834 |
| 5.3L, 4WD | 7,700 | 8,200 | 1,746 |
| 6.2L, 2WD | 7,700 | 8,200 | 1,671 |
| 6.2L, 4WD | 7,600 | 8,100 | 1,616 |
| 3.0L diesel, 2WD | 8,200 | 8,200 | 1,717 |
| 3.0L diesel, 4WD | 8,000 | 8,000 | 1,625 |
The table shows why the engine and drivetrain matter: a Tahoe’s listed maximum varies by as much as 400 pounds across these builds, and its payload varies too. GM cautions that passengers, cargo, options and accessories can reduce how much the vehicle can tow.

What the available 2026 information does—and does not—show
Do not carry the 2025 Tahoe figures forward as though they were confirmed 2026 ratings. Toyota’s 2026 comparison page lists a Sequoia payload of 1,730 pounds and a Tahoe payload of 1,927 pounds in the comparison, but those are comparison values, not guaranteed payloads for every build. The page does not provide a complete configuration-by-configuration towing comparison that settles the 2026 maximum-rating winner. Chevrolet’s current Tahoe-versus-Sequoia comparison likewise does not establish the complete 2026 towing table needed for that conclusion.

Why payload can become the limit before towing capacity
Tow rating is only one constraint. Payload is the weight the SUV can carry, including occupants, cargo, installed options and accessories, and the trailer’s tongue weight pressing down on the hitch. As a result, a vehicle can be under its advertised trailer-weight maximum yet exceed its payload limit when it is carrying a full complement of passengers or heavy cargo.
The 2026 comparison’s 1,730-pound Sequoia and 1,927-pound Tahoe payload figures are useful as a broad screening comparison, not as the allowable load for a particular SUV. Check the payload or carrying-capacity label on the exact vehicle; GM specifically directs buyers to the door-jamb label and the owner’s manual. Toyota also cautions in its brochure: “Never tow beyond a vehicle’s published towing capacities.”

How to check whether your trailer fits the SUV
- Identify the exact vehicle. Match model year, trim, engine and drivetrain. Find that configuration’s official towing information instead of relying on a model-wide maximum.
- Use the trailer’s loaded weight. Compare the trailer’s actual expected gross weight when ready to travel—not its empty or dry weight—with the SUV’s rating and the trailer’s own limits.
- Check the SUV’s available payload. Add passengers and everything carried in or on the SUV, then account for the loaded trailer’s tongue weight. Use the exact vehicle’s carrying-capacity label and owner’s manual.
- Verify the whole hitch and braking setup. Confirm the receiver and hitch ratings, trailer wiring, brake controller and trailer-brake requirements, along with any weight-distributing hitch requirement that applies to your vehicle and trailer.
- Stay within every applicable limit. The towing figure alone does not establish that the combination is within payload, hitch, axle or other limits. Follow the vehicle and trailer documentation for the specific setup.
Hitch guidance depends on market and setup
Toyota Canada’s guidance for the 2026 Sequoia says a weight-distributing hitch with sufficient capacity is necessary when gross trailer weight exceeds 5,000 pounds (2,268 kg). That is Toyota Canada guidance for its market; it should not be generalized to every Tahoe, U.S.-market vehicle or towing setup. Check the relevant local guidance and the manuals for the exact SUV, receiver and trailer. Toyota’s 2026 comparison lists a standard trailer hitch for the Sequoia, but that does not establish that every trailer setup needs a replacement receiver.
Which SUV should you choose?
If your decision is specifically about the highest published 2025 maximum, the Sequoia is the winner on paper: 9,520 pounds versus the Tahoe’s top 2025 maximum of 8,400 pounds. If you are shopping for a 2026 model, or towing a particular loaded trailer, the available figures do not justify declaring a universal winner. Compare the exact vehicles’ current tow ratings and labels, then check payload with your real passengers, cargo and tongue weight included.
