Toyota’s 30,000-square-foot Toyota Battery Center of North America opened on October 1, 2026, in Saline, Michigan. The company says engineers will use it to develop and evaluate batteries for hybrid, plug-in hybrid, hydrogen and fully electric vehicles. The $50 million figure refers to Toyota’s earlier announcement of an investment in a Michigan battery laboratory; the opening announcement identifies the facility but does not report measured gains in battery life or vehicle range.

Is the Michigan site a battery factory?
No. Toyota describes the Saline facility as a place for development and evaluation, not battery manufacturing. It is separate from Toyota’s battery manufacturing plant in North Carolina.

How much did Toyota invest?
Toyota announced a $50 million investment in a laboratory facility at its Michigan R&D headquarters in 2023, saying it would help evaluate EV batteries and support efforts to make EVs run longer and farther. Toyota’s October 1, 2026 announcement marks the opening of the named Toyota Battery Center of North America. The investment figure is not a reported operating budget or a measure of the center’s results.

Will the center make Toyota batteries last longer?
That is Toyota’s stated aim, not an established outcome. At the opening, Toyota Group Vice President of Powertrain Jordan Choby said the facility would help engineers develop longer-lasting batteries for conditions American drivers face. Toyota also said the center can help engineers detect and resolve field concerns faster. Those are expected benefits; the opening announcement gives no quantified battery-life, range or field-resolution results from the Michigan facility.
What does the center’s research access mean?
Toyota says it is opening research access with the University of Michigan Electric Vehicle Center. The company says this will let other research partners use testing and evaluation capabilities and help develop battery engineers and technicians in Michigan. The announcement does not name additional research partners.

How does the center fit Toyota’s broader targets?
Toyota’s company-wide goals provide context, but they are not results from the Saline center. Toyota lists a target for electrified vehicles to make up 70% of new Toyota and Lexus vehicle sales in the U.S. by unit in 2030. Separately, it targets at least 90% gross material recovery from recyclable battery scrap at its North Carolina battery plant through supplier shredding operations during fiscal years 2027–2031. Neither figure is a performance measure for the Michigan facility.
