Second generation: a long run from 2008 to 2022
The second generation is the longest single period in the broad timeline. It is the relevant middle ground for shoppers who want a Sequoia from before the 2023 redesign. A 2008 model and a 2022 model are both second-generation vehicles, but their age and model-year equipment differ; the generation label alone does not establish a particular vehicle’s safety features, multimedia equipment or condition.

Third generation: the 2023 redesign and hybrid powertrain
The third generation arrived for 2023 on Toyota’s TNGA-F1 body-on-frame platform. Current-market documentation describes an i-FORCE MAX system combining a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Toyota Canada lists system output of 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque for its 2025 documentation. Those figures are specific to that market and model-year source; they are not a claim about every Sequoia generation or every market.
The current Sequoia also offers three-row seating, with Toyota Canada documenting seven- or eight-passenger configurations. Its sliding and reclining third row can be adjusted to create an elevated cargo shelf. Seating layouts and grade equipment are market-specific, so confirm the configuration on the vehicle rather than assuming it from another country’s catalog.

What does the 2026 Sequoia offer?
Toyota USA’s 2026 product page lists six grades: SR5, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, Capstone and 1794 Edition. That is the U.S. lineup stated on that page; Toyota Canada’s grade names and equipment documentation are market-specific and should not be treated as an identical list.
Toyota USA lists maximum towing capacity of up to 9,500 pounds for the 2026 Sequoia. “Up to” is important: it is the published maximum, not a rating to apply automatically to every grade or individual vehicle. Check the exact vehicle’s specifications and labels before towing, and ensure the trailer and load are within the limits that apply to that configuration.

What has Toyota announced for the 2027 Sequoia?
Toyota has announced a 2027 model update with refreshed styling and a new Trailhunter package. The announcement also names Toyota Safety Sense 4.0, a standard 14-inch multimedia display, a built-in drive recorder and upgraded FOX QS3 shocks for the TRD Pro. Toyota said full details and pricing would arrive in fall 2026; the announcement does not establish those complete specifications or prices. Treat the listed items as announced changes, not as a complete 2027 equipment guide.

There is no single best Sequoia year established by the generation timeline alone. The right choice depends on whether you prioritize a newer hybrid powertrain and current technology, a particular price and vehicle condition, or the capability and equipment of a specific used example. Use generation to narrow the search, then compare the actual model year, grade and vehicle records.

- Match towing needs to the exact configuration. A published maximum is not necessarily the rating for the vehicle you are buying.
- Verify parts and accessory fitment by model year and generation. Floor liners, cargo organizers, towing equipment and other parts may not fit across generation boundaries.
Can you get a complete list of changes for every Sequoia model year?
The official Toyota chronology and archive are useful for confirming the broad generation timeline and locating historical model-year material. They do not, in the available documentation, establish a complete, consolidated account of every year’s engine, trim, safety, infotainment or equipment changes across all three generations. For a purchase decision, check the Toyota material for the exact model year and market, then confirm features and condition on the individual vehicle. This distinction matters most when comparing nearby years within the 2008–2022 generation: sharing a generation does not prove that two vehicles have identical equipment.
