The right choice combines the correct approval for your market, a secure fit for your head shape, and features suited to how you ride. SHARP’s five-star score is a useful comparison, but SHARP explicitly says fit comes first.
What makes a full-face helmet the right choice?
A full-face helmet covers the head and includes a chin bar. Major helmet standards test chin-bar mechanical strength on full-face and system helmets, but you should still check the exact approval marking and configuration on the helmet you buy. A model name alone does not prove that every size, production year or regional version has the same approval.
For buyers in the UK, SHARP says helmets sold legally must meet at least one regulatory standard. Its star rating is an additional comparative aid, not a replacement for the legal certification required in your market. Confirm the marking required where you ride before comparing models.
How SHARP ratings work
SHARP rates tested helmet models from one to five stars, with five stars the highest. SHARP says a lower-rated helmet still offers protection, while a five-star helmet offers good levels of protection around the helmet. The rating does not overcome a poor fit.

#1 Best Overall
- 2 Visors Included: Clear + Smoked and 1 Neck Scarf for Winter Use
- Streamlined Aerodynamic Design Reduces Wind Noise and Drag
- Advanced and Lightweight Durable ABS Shell

SHARP’s published method subjects each model to 30 linear and two oblique impact tests. It uses at least seven individual samples and impact speeds of 6, 7.5 and 8.5 metres per second. SHARP says its highest speed is above the UN ECE Regulation 22.06 speed it cites, describing this as an additional assessment rather than a substitute for the approval required in the buyer’s market. Read the full method at SHARP Testing.

How to compare candidates for your riding
1. Start with legal approval
- Identify the regulation or approval mark required in the country where you will ride.
- Inspect the permanent label and product documentation, not just a retailer title.
- Check that the approval applies to the helmet’s actual configuration, including any removable or alternative components.
2. Get the fit right
Measure your head according to the manufacturer’s instructions, then try the specific model on. The helmet should sit level, hold the cheeks firmly and remain stable when you move your head, without painful pressure points. Keep it on long enough to reveal discomfort. Different brands and models suit different head shapes, so a correct circumference measurement is only a starting point.
Rank #3
- High Resistance ABS Shell With Micrometrically Adjustable Strap
- Meets or Exceeds FMVSS-218 and DOT Safety Standards
- Helmet Liner / Cheek Pads are Lightweight, Soft and Easily Removable and Washable
- Sleek and Lightweight Design Reduces Wind Noise
- Modular Flip-Up Function Anti-Scratch, Anti-Fog and Wide View Clear Visor
SHARP’s guidance is unequivocal: “no matter what its safety rating might be, a helmet must fit the rider correctly.” Read its consumer guidance in the March 2025 Helmet Safety Ratings publication.
3. Match the helmet to the use
- Commuting: prioritise an easy-to-live-with visor, dependable ventilation and a fit you can tolerate for repeated short trips.
- Touring: look for stable fit over long hours, practical visor operation and ventilation that works across changing weather.
- Sport riding: prioritise stability at speed, field of view and secure visor retention, while confirming the helmet remains approved for road use.
- Adventure use: verify the exact configuration and whether the peak, visor and chin-bar arrangement match your road and off-road needs.
4. Compare features only when documented
Manufacturer specifications can establish features such as visor systems, ventilation layouts and quoted weight, but those figures are not automatically comparable across sizes or test methods. The available evidence does not establish a reliable cross-model noise, weight or price ranking, so do not choose a “winner” on those attributes without a clearly described, independent test.
Rank #4

- Secure Fit: Full-coverage chin protection enhances safety, soft cheek pads conform to facial contours for a stable fit, and the balanced weight design helps reduce neck strain during long rides
A practical buying checklist
- Write down the approval required for your riding market.
- Measure your head and identify your likely head shape from properly fitted helmets.
- Shortlist models intended for your riding type.
- Check the exact model and version in the SHARP directory where available.
- Try the helmet on for an extended fitting session; reject pressure points, looseness or movement.
- Confirm visor, ventilation and replacement-part support for the exact version.
- Recheck the approval label and configuration before paying.
What the “best” label cannot tell you
A star score describes SHARP’s comparative impact results; it does not guarantee a particular crash outcome, perfect comfort or suitability for every rider. SHARP’s underlying publication discusses research covering 253 motorcycle road accidents, but that figure is a description of the research base, not a consumer guarantee for any named helmet.
The original “10 of the best” 2024 selections, their prices and their stock cannot be established from the available official material. Treat any current list as date- and market-specific, and verify each exact model against the manufacturer and the relevant approval authority.
Best Value
- High tech, aerodynamic, sport styled Kinetic Polymer Alloy shell
- AREM rotational energy management meets ECE 22.06 standards
- Dynamic, flow-through ventilation
- Helmet shown with optional tinted shield. (Ships with clear shield only)
- DOT approved. Meets the FMVSS 218 Standard
The Bottom Line
Choose the full-face helmet that carries the approval required where you ride, fits your head securely and comfortably, and has independently documented evidence such as a current SHARP rating. A famous model or high star score cannot compensate for the wrong fit or certification.
