Toyota Motor North America said its systems were “not breached or compromised” after a threat actor claimed to have leaked files associated with Toyota. The company attributed the data to an unnamed third party it said was misrepresented as Toyota. The reported archive and its contents remain claims by the threat actor, not a verified count of exposed customer records.
What Toyota said about the incident
BleepingComputer reported on August 19, 2024, that Toyota was responding to a data exposure claim, then updated its report on August 20 with Toyota Motor North America’s clarification. Toyota initially told the publication: “We are aware of the situation. The issue is limited in scope and is not a system wide issue.” It also said it was engaging with impacted people and would provide assistance if needed. BleepingComputer’s report
In its later clarification, Toyota Motor North America said its own systems were “not breached or compromised.” It attributed the data to “a third-party entity that is misrepresented as Toyota.” The company did not name that entity. This distinction matters: the incident concerned data associated with Toyota, but the company’s reported statement denies that Toyota Motor North America’s systems were breached.
What ZeroSevenGroup claimed was leaked
The threat actor ZeroSevenGroup claimed it stole and leaked a 240 GB archive. According to BleepingComputer’s account of the group’s claims, the archive included employee and customer information, contracts, financial information, network details, and credentials. Those categories and the archive size are allegations by the threat actor; the report did not independently verify an inventory of the files or establish how many customers’ records, if any, were exposed.
