2026 Nissan Leaf Review: A Strong Budget EV, but Not the Only One

The 2026 Nissan Leaf S+ pairs a $29,990 listed starting MSRP with 303 miles of EPA-estimated range, but trim choice, charging access and the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt shape its value.

The 2026 Nissan Leaf is a compelling affordable electric car, especially in S+ form: Nissan lists it at $29,990 MSRP with up to 303 miles of EPA-estimated range. But “best budget EV” depends on which trim you buy, how you charge, and what you compare it with. The returning 2027 Chevrolet Bolt is another roughly $30,000 contender, and no single range test settles the choice for every driver.

2026 Nissan Leaf price and range by trim

Nissan’s U.S. specifications list three front-wheel-drive trims, each with a 75 kWh battery. Prices below are manufacturer suggested starting prices, before dealer-specific discounts, taxes, fees, financing, or options. Nissan’s listed range figures are EPA estimates, not guaranteed driving distances.

Trim Starting MSRP EPA-estimated range Notable listed equipment
S+ $29,990 (Nissan; 2025 pricing announcement) 303 miles Dual 12.3-inch displays
SV+ $34,230 (Nissan USA specifications page, accessed 2026) 288 miles Dual 14.3-inch displays; equipment includes differences in wheels, seating trim, and heated seating versus S+
Platinum+ $38,990 (Nissan USA specifications page, accessed 2026) 259 miles Dual 14.3-inch displays; higher-trim equipment

The S+ combines the lowest entry price with the longest listed range. Moving up the trim ladder adds equipment, but the EPA-estimated range falls. Check Nissan’s current specs and trim details against the exact vehicle and inventory listing, because equipment and packages can change.

Is the Leaf the best budget EV?

It is a strong candidate, not a universal winner. The S+’s combination of a sub-$30,000 listed starting MSRP and 303-mile EPA estimate is attractive on paper. The comparison with the Bolt is close enough that buyers should look beyond headline range: compare the actual trim and as-equipped price, included comfort and safety equipment, charging access, and the routes they drive.

An AP News comparison by Edmunds says its standardized range test returned 310 miles for the 2026 Leaf and 290 miles for the 2027 Bolt. The same comparison cites EPA estimates of 303 miles for the Leaf and 262 for the Bolt. Those are distinct measures: the first pair are Edmunds test results, not government ratings, and neither establishes what every driver will achieve. Edmunds describes the Bolt as a compelling alternative at about the same starting-price level. See the AP News/Edmunds comparison for its test context.

  • The Leaf may suit you better if the S+ price and its EPA-estimated range fit your budget and daily driving, or if Nissan’s charging setup works well for your routes.
  • Compare the Bolt closely if you are cross-shopping near the same price point; verify the specific 2027 trim, equipment, and actual price available to you rather than relying on one test result.
  • For either car, account for home charging, weekly mileage, local climate, route speeds, and the availability of compatible fast chargers where you travel.

What it is like to drive

Tom’s Guide reported driving a Platinum+ for a week. In that publication’s test, the reviewer averaged 3.6 miles per kWh over the week, recorded 5.1 miles per kWh on short city driving and 4.1 miles per kWh on highway driving, and found Eco mode underpowered. The reviewer said Sport mode improved acceleration and steering response. These are observations from one review vehicle and its routes and conditions, not a forecast for every trim, driver, or season. Read Tom’s Guide’s week-long Leaf review for its account.

Tom’s Guide put its reviewed Platinum+ configuration at $41,930, above Nissan’s $38,990 Platinum+ starting MSRP. A configured vehicle’s price can reflect options and other charges; dealer pricing and taxes also vary. Use the actual buyer’s order or window sticker for a like-for-like comparison rather than treating a review-vehicle price as the trim’s base MSRP.

Charging: two ports, two different jobs

The Leaf’s driver-side J1772 port is for AC Level 1 and Level 2 charging. The passenger-side NACS port is for DC fast charging, including compatible Tesla Superchargers. The NACS port is not the routine AC charging inlet. Nissan says a portable J1772 charging cable is included and supports 120-volt and 240-volt charging.

That included cable means a separate home charger is optional. A J1772 Level 2 home charging station can be a more convenient, faster routine option for owners who can install one; confirm connector compatibility and have electrical requirements assessed before installation. Nissan describes DC fast charging up to 150 kW and estimates about 30 minutes from 20% to 80% in its brochure; its trim specifications list 35 minutes. These are Nissan figures, not guaranteed stop times: battery temperature, charger capability, state of charge, and other conditions affect actual charging.

Nissan also says Genuine Nissan Accessory CCS adapters are available to expand DC fast-charging options. Treat this as a model-specific accessory and verify compatibility with the vehicle and charging network; the port layout or an adapter listing alone should not be taken as a promise that every station will work.

Powertrain and practical features

Nissan’s 2025 press kit describes a 214-horsepower electric motor and a liquid-cooled 75 kWh battery pack. Nissan’s brochure also describes vehicle-to-load capability of up to 1,500 watts through outlets or adapters. That capability depends on the appropriate outlet or accessory; it does not mean every external power outlet is standard equipment.

For exact equipment differences among trims, including display size, wheels, seating, and heated-seat features, consult Nissan’s live trim specifications before choosing. The specifications page is more useful than assuming that a feature shown on a higher trim is included in the S+.

Who should buy the 2026 Leaf?

Consider the S+ if range per dollar matters most

It is the lowest-priced listed trim and has the highest EPA-estimated range in the lineup. It is the clearest fit for a buyer prioritizing the entry price and range figure over higher-trim equipment.

Choose a higher trim for its equipment, not more range

The SV+ and Platinum+ cost more and have shorter EPA-estimated range than the S+. Compare their included features with what you value, and check the as-configured price. The Platinum+ test vehicle reviewed by Tom’s Guide also illustrates why a high-trim Leaf can cost substantially more than the entry price.

Compare alternatives if charging access or equipment changes the value

Before deciding between the Leaf and the Bolt, compare the precise trims on sale in your area, charging connectors and network access on your regular routes, home-charging feasibility, and the price after required fees. Incentives and utility programs are location- and date-specific; confirm eligibility and current amounts for your own purchase rather than assuming a national discount.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
