Yes—Toyota returned to No. 1 in Consumer Reports’ 2026 brand reliability ranking, announced December 4, 2025. It narrowly edged Subaru, which led the prior year. That is a result for Consumer Reports’ annual owner-survey-based ranking, not proof that every Toyota is reliable or that Toyota ranks first under every reliability measure.
Is Toyota the most reliable car brand again?
In Consumer Reports’ 2026 Annual Auto Reliability Survey, Toyota took the top brand spot for the first time since 2022, narrowly ahead of Subaru, the previous year’s winner. Consumer Reports announced the result in its December 4, 2025 Annual Automotive Report Card release.
“Reclaimed” is accurate when it refers specifically to this Consumer Reports annual brand ranking: Subaru had finished first in the 2025 survey, ahead of Lexus and Toyota. But Consumer Reports said changes to that year’s survey questions and methodology meant the 2025 brand results could not be directly compared with earlier years. The sequence shows who led each report; it does not establish a precise, apples-to-apples reliability trend over time.
What does Consumer Reports’ reliability survey measure?
The brand ranking is based on average predicted reliability, calculated from Consumer Reports members’ vehicle surveys. For the 2026 ranking, a brand needed reliability data for at least two models and at least two model years among 2023, 2024, 2025, or early 2026. Consumer Reports describes its approach in its reliability ranking methodology.

The 2026 report used responses covering about 380,000 vehicles—a 27 percent increase over the prior year’s data—spanning model years 2000 through 2025, plus a few early 2026 models, according to Consumer Reports. These are substantial owner-survey data, not a census of all U.S. vehicle owners. A brand-level average also cannot predict what will happen with an individual vehicle.
Does the No. 1 ranking mean every Toyota is reliable?
No. A brand ranking summarizes predicted reliability across eligible models; it does not guarantee a trouble-free experience with every Toyota, model year, or used vehicle. For a purchase decision, check the specific model and year’s reliability history and results rather than relying on the brand position alone.

Also keep reliability separate from Consumer Reports’ Overall Score. The broader score combines predicted reliability with track-test results, owner satisfaction, safety features, and crash-test data. Toyota’s first-place reliability result by itself does not mean the brand is best overall or that every Toyota outranks competing vehicles.
How should buyers use the result?
- Identify the ranking: This result is Consumer Reports’ 2026 brand reliability survey, announced in December 2025; rankings from different publishers may measure different things.
- Look past the badge: Compare the particular model and model year you are considering, including its history and any available model-specific prediction.
- Separate reliability from overall quality: Consider driving performance, owner satisfaction, safety, and crash-test information alongside reliability.
- Treat year-to-year movement cautiously: Consumer Reports’ stated methodology changes for the 2025 survey limit direct comparisons with earlier reports, so the 2026 return to first should not be read as proof that Toyota improved by a precisely measurable amount.
What might explain the result?
Jake Fisher, Consumer Reports’ senior director of auto testing, said the organization’s surveys continue to show that slower, steadier vehicle redesigns can benefit reliability, while more aggressive changes and new technologies often bring setbacks. That is Fisher’s interpretation of the survey pattern, not a rule that guarantees the outcome for any particular redesign or vehicle.
