Before buying a used second-generation Toyota Tacoma, put the frame and underbody near the top of your inspection. Toyota documented frame-corrosion concerns for certain 2005–2010 Tacomas, not every truck in the 2005–2015 generation. Check the specific truck’s VIN for unrepaired recalls, ask for frame and maintenance records, and have the vehicle physically inspected before you buy.
Start with the frame and underbody
Toyota’s 2017 campaign documents say the company had received reports of frame corrosion on 2005–2010 Tacoma models. Toyota connected the concern with prolonged exposure to road salt and environmental conditions in specified cold-climate areas. That history makes a close inspection important, particularly for trucks used where roads are heavily salted, but it does not establish the condition of any individual Tacoma.
Toyota distinguished significant rust perforation under its program criteria from ordinary surface rust. A look at exposed, visible surfaces cannot establish the condition of the entire frame. The official campaign documents do not give consumers a visual pass/fail threshold, so do not treat a quick glance—or an applied coating—as proof that the frame is sound.
- Look over the frame and underbody for corrosion, repairs, and coatings that may obscure the underlying metal.
- Ask for records of any frame inspection, corrosion-resistant compound (CRC) application, or frame replacement.
- If the frame cannot be safely and fully assessed, make a lift inspection part of a qualified pre-purchase inspection.
Understand Toyota’s historical frame programs
Toyota’s 2017 documents described two programs for certain 2005–2010 Tacomas. Under the Warranty Enhancement Program, a frame meeting or exceeding Toyota’s stated rust-perforation standard was eligible for replacement at no charge, subject to the program’s terms. The associated Limited Service Campaign offered CRC treatment to eligible vehicles that passed inspection, with geographic, prior-repair, and time limits.

These were historical programs, not an assurance of coverage in 2026. The H0F CRC campaign document gave an expiration date of May 20, 2019; the warranty-enhancement document described coverage through the later of 12 years from the vehicle’s date of first use or January 31, 2019. If a seller says Toyota repaired or inspected the frame, ask for paperwork and confirm any vehicle-specific claim with Toyota. Prior work does not establish the frame’s present condition.
Toyota estimated that about 887,000 2005–2010 Tacomas were covered by the Warranty Enhancement Program and about 77,800 by campaign H0F. Those are program coverage counts, not counts of trucks with confirmed corrosion.

Check recalls using the truck’s VIN
Use the NHTSA recall lookup with the candidate truck’s VIN or license plate. NHTSA says those searches provide information about whether a specific vehicle needs recall repair; a year, make, and model search returns general results. Save or print the vehicle-specific result and compare it with the seller’s repair records.
A clean lookup is not a complete service history or a mechanical inspection. NHTSA says its lookup omits certain recalls that have already been repaired, recalls older than 15 years subject to its stated exception, and some other categories. It also does not establish whether non-safety service campaigns were performed or whether the truck is mechanically sound.

Ask for records and arrange an independent inspection
- Record the VIN. Confirm that the VIN on the truck matches the one in the listing and the documents you receive.
- Run the VIN-specific recall search. Use NHTSA’s lookup and retain the result for this vehicle.
- Request records. Ask for maintenance and repair history, including any Toyota frame inspection, CRC application, or frame replacement paperwork.
- Have the truck inspected in person. Ask an independent mechanic to assess the frame, underbody, and overall condition; a lift inspection is especially useful when the underside cannot otherwise be fully assessed.
- Compare the evidence across trucks. Weigh actual frame condition, documented frame work, unrepaired recall status, and the completeness of maintenance and ownership records.
What this checklist can—and cannot—tell you
The frame-campaign documents provide a specific reason to examine certain 2005–2010 Tacomas closely; they do not establish that every second-generation truck has the same history or identify a best year or trim. They also do not provide a comprehensive inspection checklist for every year, engine, and transmission in the 2005–2015 generation. Judge the individual truck on its condition, documentation, and an independent inspection rather than using the frame-campaign history as a year-by-year reliability ranking.
