The Eco Escape is not a converted Prius: it is a camper based on a third-generation Toyota Estima Hybrid, using Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive with E-Four electric all-wheel drive. New Atlas reported a starting price of £19,995—about US$25,275 at the time—in December 2024, but that is a historical price, not a verified current offer.
What is the Eco Escape?
Campervan Co’s Eco Escape turns a Japanese-market third-generation Toyota Estima Hybrid into a five-seat camper with four sleeping places. New Atlas describes the Estima as approximately 190 inches (480 cm) long. Its report identifies the powertrain as a 2.4-liter petrol engine and electric motor at the front, plus a dedicated rear-axle motor in Toyota’s E-Four arrangement.
The “Prius-powered” description refers to the Prius-related Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive system, not to a Prius donor vehicle. The report provides no Eco Escape fuel-economy figure or measured emissions result, so it does not establish how much fuel or emissions the conversion saves.
How the seating, bed and kitchen fit together
Five seats and four berths
The rear three-seat bench is mounted on rails and adjusts to form a bed. A TentBox rooftop tent is reported as standard sleeping equipment, bringing the stated sleeping capacity to four. An optional pop-up sleeper roof is also described; the report does not name the TentBox model.

A compact rear kitchen
A low-profile kitchen pod sits in the cargo area. It includes a small sink with a folding faucet, a compressor fridge, storage for an induction cooktop, an integrated water tank and a leisure-battery system. When covered, the pod is designed to leave cargo space available. A removable table and swiveling front seats help create a dining arrangement.

What did it cost, and what vehicles were described?
New Atlas reported a starting price of £19,995 (approximately US$25,275 at the time) for a 2006 example with 60,000–70,000 miles and the TentBox rooftop tent. Newer and lower-mileage vehicles were described as more expensive. The report covered Estima Hybrids from 2006 to 2013 and mileage examples of roughly 20,000–70,000 miles; the least expensive example was at the older, higher-mileage end.
These are historical inventory details, not a current price guide. The report does not verify current stock, individual vehicle condition, servicing history or present-day offers. Any buyer should assess the specific used vehicle and confirm exactly which conversion equipment is included.

What the “efficiency” claim does—and does not—show
The hybrid drivetrain and minivan format are central to the Eco Escape’s pitch: it is intended to serve as everyday transport as well as a camper. Campervan Co founder Gary Hayes told New Atlas, “We designed this hybrid camper van with everyday use in mind – we want customers using this every day for going to work or dropping the kids off at school, then kitting it out for canoeing or camping at the weekend.” That describes the builder’s intended use, not verified owner experience or a measured efficiency outcome.
New Atlas’s report does not publish fuel consumption, emissions testing or a comparison with another camper. It therefore supports describing the Eco Escape as a hybrid-based camper, but not assigning it an MPG figure or claiming a quantified fuel saving.
