Garmin announced it at a U.S. suggested retail price of $599.99 on January 6, 2025. It adds rear-vehicle detection and visual alerts, but “for any bike” needs a caveat: Garmin describes installation on any motorcycle while noting that the supplied mounts may not suit every bike without additional hardware.
What the zūmo R1 Radar does
The zūmo R1 is a rear-facing motorcycle radar system intended to help riders notice approaching vehicles and traffic in blind spots. Garmin’s announcement describes two amber side lights, an optional red rear-facing light and handlebar indicator lights. Pairing the system with Garmin’s zūmo Radar smartphone app or a compatible zūmo XT2 motorcycle navigator can add a full-screen radar view. Audio alerts are also available through the smartphone app when paired with a compatible helmet or headset. The XT2 is optional; the phone app is another display route. Garmin’s announcement and its navigator alert instructions describe the available pairing and alert options.
Price and what “$600” means
Garmin announced a U.S. suggested retail price of $599.99 on January 6, 2025. That is the launch-announcement MSRP, not a verified current retailer price; check the Garmin U.S. product page or a seller for current pricing and availability.
Detection range and operating limits
Garmin’s owner’s manual lists a maximum approaching-vehicle detection distance of 60 m (197 ft), a 170-degree horizontal beam and detection of up to eight moving vehicles. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent road-test results. The manual says detection may degrade or vehicles may go undetected when the motorcycle is traveling below 25 km/h (15 mph) or above 150 km/h (93 mph). It gives a relative-speed detection range of 0–55 km/h (0–34 mph). See Garmin’s radar detection specifications.

#1 Best Overall
- 【Advanced Motorcycle Blind Spot Detection System】Our Blind Spot Detection System employs cutting-edge 24GHz multi-antenna millimeter wave radar technology, delivering exceptional coverage and pinpoint accuracy. The system provides timely visual alerts through LED indicators, enabling riders to identify potential hazards and maintain safer journeys. Features simultaneous three-directional detection of approaching vehicles within its operational range.
- 【Motorcycle BSD Working Conditions】In order to reduce interference from cluttered signals, the alarm will only be triggered when the speed of the detected target is greater than 10km/h.
- 【Upgraded Electronic Manual】In order to implement the concept of environmental protection, we use an upgraded electronic manual. You can quickly access the manual content through the QR code included in the package. Note: In order to reduce interference from cluttered signals, the alarm will only be triggered when the speed of the detected target is greater than 10km/h.
- 【24/7 Safety Guardian with Sentry Mode】The Weuaste BSD01 system becomes particularly crucial when visibility is compromised - during rain, fog, or nighttime riding. When traditional mirrors lose effectiveness, our BSD continues delivering accurate rear traffic information regardless of weather conditions. This silent sentinel constantly monitors your surroundings, providing an extra layer of protection.
- 【Comprehensive Blind Spot Monitoring】The Weuaste BSD01 Blind Spot Detection System utilizes advanced 24G millimeter-wave radar to precisely monitor both left and right rear blind zones, with an impressive 30-meter detection range. Key features include: 1, 130° rear blind spot coverage. 2, Automatic object recognition within the 30-meter defense perimeter. 3, Dual-stage real-time warning system. Significantly enhances riding safety through proactive hazard detection.
Fitment and installation: not a universal plug-and-play add-on
The R1 must be hard-wired to the motorcycle’s electrical system; it is not a battery-powered accessory that simply clips on. Garmin recommends using an experienced electrical installer, so allow for installation time and possible labor in addition to the device price. Its mounting guidance says the sensor should face backward and sit level, with adequate clearance throughout rear-suspension travel and away from extreme heat such as the exhaust. Cable slack must accommodate steering and suspension movement, and a higher rear mounting position provides a better radar view. Garmin also cautions that its provided mounting options may not fit every vehicle and that additional hardware may be required. Review the mounting considerations for your bike before buying or arranging installation.
What it cannot replace
The R1 is an awareness aid, not a substitute for looking, judging traffic or checking mirrors and blind spots. Garmin’s manual states: “It is not a replacement for rider attentiveness, good judgement, or checking mirrors and blind spots.” Riders should also keep the system’s documented speed limits in mind rather than assuming it will detect every vehicle in every condition.

- 🏍️【See More of What’s Behind You】The 24GHz rear radar continuously watches traffic approaching from behind your motorcycle, helping cover areas that are easy to miss in the mirrors and giving you an extra source of awareness on busy roads.
- 📡【98FT Detection With 130° Coverage】Monitor rear traffic up to 98 ft away across an approximately 130° sensing area. The wide detection zone covers vehicles approaching from the left rear, right rear, and directly behind your bike.
- 🚦【Clear Left, Right, and Rear Alerts】The dual warning lights show where traffic is coming from without requiring a screen. Left-side traffic activates the left yellow light, right-side traffic activates the right yellow light, and vehicles directly behind trigger both red indicators.
- ⚡【1.9 mph Target Speed Filtering】To reduce unnecessary warnings caused by cluttered signals, the alert function activates only when the detected target is traveling faster than 1.9 mph, helping keep everyday notifications more useful and stable.
- 🛣️【Extra Awareness When Changing Lanes】Whether you are commuting, passing traffic, or riding on multi-lane highways, the system provides visual rear-traffic information that can help you check surrounding conditions before moving across lanes.
Is this the right kind of motorcycle radar?
Here, “radar” means rear-traffic and blind-spot vehicle detection. Garmin’s materials describe the zūmo R1 as helping identify surrounding vehicles; they do not describe it as a police speed-radar detector. If that is what you mean by a radar detector, this product addresses a different need.
