GAC Toyota plans extended-range versions of the Highlander and Sienna for China, according to GAC Group’s 2025 interim report. The report confirms a corporate plan—not a launch date or a detailed powertrain specification. It does not say when either vehicle will arrive or provide electric range, battery size, charging details, price, or output.
What Toyota has actually announced
GAC Group’s 2025 interim report says GAC Toyota “plans to launch the extended-range versions of Highlander and Sienna” and accelerate development of competitive plug-in hybrid models. This is evidence of a planned pair of China-market variants, not confirmation that either is on sale or has a scheduled release. The report does not identify model years or spell out what “extended-range” means for these vehicles. It also gives no vehicle-specific technical specifications.
What “extended-range” does—and does not—tell us
The report uses the term “extended-range versions,” but the cited passage does not describe the system. It does not establish the engine’s role, battery capacity, electric-only distance, charging method, power output, or whether the Highlander and Sienna will use the same hardware. Those details should not be inferred from other Toyota models or from the phrase alone.

How the China plan differs from the North American electric Highlander
Toyota Motor North America separately announced an all-electric Highlander for North America in February 2026. That battery-electric vehicle is a different regional announcement from GAC Toyota’s plan for an “extended-range” Highlander in China. Why the plan fits Toyota’s broader China strategy
Toyota has described a multi-pathway approach in China, with different electrification options intended to address regional customer needs. At Auto Shanghai 2025, it announced locally developed battery-electric models, including the bZ7. That broader strategy helps explain why a China-market extended-range plan sits alongside other powertrain types, but it does not add specifications or a schedule for the Highlander and Sienna.
