The total changes dramatically with model year, cab and drivetrain, rust, location, finish standard, and how much work you do yourself. Structural rust must be assessed before cosmetic work is priced: a localized weld-in repair can be manageable, while a frame swap can require 40 or more labor hours plus a large amount of disassembly and reassembly. The figures below are scoped estimates from commercial repair guides and a labor-time reference, not a national price list or a quote for your truck.
What a Toyota Pickup restoration estimate must include
“Restoration” can mean anything from making a solid driver reliable to returning a rare truck to show-quality condition. Those are different projects with different budgets. Before asking a shop for a number, define the truck and the finish you want.

- Identity: model year, cab style, wheelbase, 2WD or 4WD, engine and trim.
- Condition: frame, cab mounts, rocker panels, floors, bed, suspension, brakes, wiring, engine and transmission.
- Finish: safe-and-presentable, driver-quality paint, or concours-level body and paint.
- Labor split: which work you will perform, which work a specialist will perform, and whether the shop will handle disassembly and reassembly.
- Location: labor rates, shipping distances and regional parts availability.
A written estimate should state what is included and excluded. A headline total is not comparable when one quote includes stripping, welding, paint preparation, fluids, alignment and reassembly and another covers only the visible repair.
Inspect the frame before pricing cosmetics
Frame condition is the largest swing factor in an older Pickup restoration. Rust can develop inside boxed sections and remain hidden during a quick exterior inspection. A qualified structural inspection should determine whether the damage is localized and repairable or whether the frame is too compromised for a patch.

What the inspection should establish
- Where corrosion has removed section strength, not merely surface scale.
- Whether a repair section can be welded into sound surrounding metal.
- Whether cracks, bends or previous repairs affect alignment.
- Whether cab mounts and suspension mounting areas remain structurally sound.
- Whether the proposed repair complies with applicable safety and inspection requirements in your area.
An inspection hammer can help identify thin metal during a preliminary check, but it cannot establish roadworthiness or replace a professional structural assessment. Do not order a frame section or authorize paint work until the repair method is documented.
Frame repair versus a complete frame swap
Localized welding and a complete replacement are not interchangeable jobs. A localized repair preserves most of the truck but depends on finding enough sound frame around the damaged area. A swap involves separating the body and major systems, transferring components, correcting fitment and reassembling the truck.

Why a swap becomes expensive
A frame swap is labor intensive because the shop must support the body, disconnect and transfer major systems and components, inspect hardware while it is exposed, set the replacement frame correctly and put the truck back together. Corrosion discovered after disassembly can add fabrication, fasteners, brake or fuel-line work and refinishing. The cited guides estimate 40 or more hours for a full swap; another commercial reference describes 40–60 or more hours. Those figures are labor-time estimates, not a complete parts-and-labor quote.
For a 1990 2.4L RWD application, the Open Labor Project labor-time page lists a full frame swap at 40+ labor hours. It is a third-party reference for that configuration, not book time that applies to every cab, drivetrain or shop.

Body rust and cab-corner costs
Cab-corner corrosion often looks like a small hole but can continue into the rocker panel or cab mount. The repair area must be opened until solid metal is reached, then welded, sealed, prepared and painted. Ask the estimator to identify the complete affected area rather than pricing only the visible opening.
A guide covering 1994–1995 cab-corner work reports body-shop rates of $75–$150 per hour. That is a source-specific reported range, not a verified current rate in your city. A catalog can show that a year is covered without proving that every needed part is in stock. American Toyota Parts lists Toyota Pickup catalog coverage for 1984–1995 at its Pickup catalog page. Treat that as a lookup path, then verify availability, application and delivery before finalizing the budget.
The distinction is visible in a 1990 2.4L DLX frame-and-components catalog at Toyota Parts Delivered/Toyota of Nashua: several frame components are marked “Unavailable,” while another component in the same assembly category is listed. Availability can therefore differ part by part.
Record these details before ordering
- Exact model year and production configuration.
- Regular, extended or other cab style and the wheelbase.
- 2WD or 4WD and engine application.
- Left or right side, front or rear location, and whether the item is a frame rail, crossmember, mount or hardware kit.
- New, used, reproduction or fabricated-part acceptance criteria.
The 1989 frame guide specifically warns that replacement frames must match wheelbase, cab and drivetrain. A cheaper frame that does not match those dimensions can create alignment and mounting problems that erase the apparent savings.

Build the estimate in the order the work happens
Use this sequence to turn an uncertain project into a decision you can compare across shops.
- Document the truck. Photograph the frame, cab corners, floor, bed, mounts and underside. Record the VIN, configuration and current running condition.
- Obtain a structural inspection. Ask for marked photographs or a diagram showing every rusted or damaged section and whether it is repairable.
- Choose the structural path. Compare a qualified weld-in repair with a frame replacement. Require the proposed repair location, materials and corrosion treatment in writing.
- Confirm parts before committing. Check exact fitment and current stock for the frame, sections, mounts, fasteners, brake components and seals. Identify shipping, core or donor requirements.
- Separate mechanical work from body work. List engine, transmission, cooling, fuel, brakes, steering, suspension, electrical, glass, weather seals and interior as separate line items.
- Define the finish. State whether the quote includes stripping, corrosion protection, panel straightening, primer, color, clear coat, bed treatment and final assembly.
- Set an approval rule for discoveries. Agree on a call-before-proceeding threshold when disassembly reveals additional rust or broken hardware.
How to compare shop quotes
Request itemized estimates from shops that regularly perform structural welding and older-truck restorations. Compare the assumptions, not just the total.

Two estimates can legitimately differ because one assumes a localized repair and the other assumes a replacement, or because one includes a finished paint job and the other stops after welding. Ask each shop to price the same defined scope before deciding.
Common restoration cost surprises
Rust hidden inside the frame
Exterior scale can conceal loss of thickness inside boxed rails. A truck that appears to need one patch may require more sections or a different structural solution once the metal is cleaned.
Access and reassembly labor
The visible repair is only one part of the job. Removing surrounding components, preserving wiring and lines, replacing seized hardware and checking alignment can dominate labor even when the weld itself is straightforward.

Cab mounts and adjacent sheet metal
Cab-corner rust can continue into rockers or mounts. If those areas are not included in the original scope, the estimate can expand after cutting away the outer skin.
Unavailable replacement parts
Catalog coverage does not guarantee stock. A missing new part may require a used donor, additional shipping, fabrication or a revised repair method. Confirm availability before buying paint or scheduling final assembly.
Configuration mismatch
Frames and structural parts are not generic across every Pickup. Wheelbase, cab and drivetrain must match; otherwise mounting points and driveline geometry may not align.
Finish expectations
Paint cost depends on corrosion severity and the finish standard. A driver-quality result and a show-quality result require different preparation, panel correction and inspection time. Put the desired finish in the contract.

When DIY work makes financial sense
Owner labor can reduce spending on disassembly, cleaning, parts cataloging, interior removal and basic bolt-on replacement, provided you have safe lifting equipment, a documented workspace and the skills to reassemble the truck correctly. Structural welding, frame alignment and corrosion decisions carry safety consequences; have those stages evaluated by a qualified professional even if you perform surrounding work yourself.

If you dismantle the truck, label connectors and fasteners, photograph routing and keep a parts inventory. A low initial estimate can become expensive when missing hardware, damaged wiring or undocumented hose routing delays reassembly. Agree with the shop in advance on whether customer-supplied parts are accepted and who is responsible for fitment problems.
A practical decision framework
- Choose localized repair when an inspector finds limited damage surrounded by sound metal and the repair can be aligned, welded and protected properly.
- Investigate a replacement frame when corrosion is widespread or affects critical mounting areas, but verify a matching frame and obtain a labor-inclusive written scope first.
- Pause the project when the frame path is uncertain, essential parts are unavailable or the estimate excludes disassembly and reassembly. Spending on cosmetics before resolving those questions increases risk.
- Proceed with a staged restoration when the truck is structurally sound but funds are limited: complete safety-critical chassis and brake work first, then mechanical reliability, weather sealing, body repair and final finish.
What a defensible budget looks like
A defensible budget is a range tied to an inspected scope, not a single internet number. Start with the structural option, add verified parts and shipping, then add labor using the shop’s stated hours and rate. Include a written allowance for hidden corrosion only when the shop explains what discovery would trigger it.
The frame figures cited here illustrate the spread: commercial guides put 1984–1988 full-replacement labor at roughly $4,000–$7,000+, a separate 1987–1988 guide at $5,000–$10,000+, and a 1989 guide at $8,000–$15,000+. Those differences are why year, configuration, region and scope must travel with every number. They are not totals for an entire restoration, and they do not include every mechanical, body, paint or interior operation.
