The Toyota Land Cruiser ROX is an open-air concept based on the 2024 Land Cruiser 250, not a production vehicle announced to rival the Jeep Wrangler. Toyota built the one-off to explore a more open, trail-focused Land Cruiser; it has not published a price, order process or sales date for a production ROX.
What is the Toyota Land Cruiser ROX?
ROX stands for “Recreation Open eXperience.” Toyota’s Calty Design Research studio developed the concept from the 2024 Land Cruiser 250 and presented it as a one-off design and engineering study. Toyota scheduled it for display at the Las Vegas Convention Center during SEMA 2024, held November 5–8.
The project was not a simple roof-removal exercise. Toyota Motor North America said in 2024 that more than 50% of the vehicle had to be reinvented and fabricated. The goal was to make the Land Cruiser feel more open while retaining its trail-oriented character.
What did Toyota change?
Open-air cabin and cargo access
The roof and rear bodywork were redesigned around a soft top that slides from front to rear. Custom skeleton doors and high-clearance rockers with rock rails open up the sides of the vehicle. A functional mid-gate links the cabin with the rear cargo area, which also has integrated seating in the tailgate.

That combination makes the ROX more than a conventional convertible-style SUV concept: its mid-gate and rear seating emphasize access between the cabin and cargo space. Toyota has not said these custom components are production-ready or compatible with retail Land Cruisers.
Wider stance and suspension changes
Toyota Motor North America reported a four-inch ride-height increase and an eight-inch track-width increase for the concept in 2024. The changes include modified suspension and forged aluminum control arms. Those figures describe the ROX build, not a specification for a Land Cruiser production model.

Is the Land Cruiser ROX going into production?
Toyota has not announced a production version, model-year launch, price or sales date. Auto Express has described future production as something the concept “can easily be envisioned” for, but that is a conditional assessment, not confirmation from Toyota.
Until Toyota makes a production announcement, the ROX is best understood as a one-off concept. Its custom fabrication and extensive body changes do not establish that Toyota will sell a conversion, offer the parts through dealers or build an open-top Land Cruiser for customers.

Could it replace or challenge the Jeep Wrangler?
The Wrangler is a useful comparison for open-air, off-road SUV use, but the ROX cannot yet be treated as a purchasable rival. The key difference is certainty: Jeep sells production Wranglers with removable-roof configurations, while Toyota has shown the ROX only as a concept.

As a design exercise, the ROX suggests how Toyota might interpret an open-air Land Cruiser, particularly through its mid-gate and integrated rear seating. As a vehicle someone can buy today, it does not challenge the Wrangler: Toyota has not confirmed that the concept will reach production.

Why Toyota built the concept
Calty president Kevin Hunter said the team asked how it could create “an even more exciting experience for our Land Cruiser enthusiast but from a real product perspective.” Toyota Division Marketing group vice president Mike Tripp called the one-off build a testament to Toyota’s commitment to pushing boundaries while remaining true to the Land Cruiser’s spirit of adventure. Those statements describe the intent behind the concept, not a commitment to sell it.
