The 2024-generation Toyota Land Cruiser’s off-road system is easier to understand when its controls are separated by job: full-time four-wheel-drive hardware creates the traction foundation, Multi-Terrain Select changes how the vehicle manages wheel spin on different surfaces, and Crawl Control regulates very slow forward speed while you steer. Locking differentials connect the drivetrain mechanically; they are not another name for a terrain mode or a cruise-control function.
Equipment depends on model year, grade and package. The explanation below is based primarily on U.S. 2024 Land Cruiser material, with Toyota’s 2025 manual index and 2026 brochure used to clarify continuing feature positioning. Check the owner manual and window sticker for the exact vehicle before operating any locker, terrain control or descent aid.

The traction foundation: full-time 4WD, transfer case and lockers
Toyota describes the U.S. 2024 Land Cruiser as having full-time four-wheel drive, an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case and a center locking differential. The transfer case provides high and low ranges: high range is the normal four-wheel-drive operating range, while low range multiplies torque and gives the driver finer control for demanding, slow terrain. The vehicle’s standard electronic rear locking differential adds a second locking point at the rear axle.

What the center differential does
A center differential connects the front and rear axles while allowing them to turn at different speeds when the vehicle corners. Locking it reduces that speed difference and ties the two axles together more firmly, which helps when one axle has substantially less grip. It addresses the relationship between front and rear drive, not the difference between the left and right wheels on one axle.

What the rear differential lock does
The rear locker connects the two rear wheels so they can receive drive together instead of allowing an open differential to send most usable torque to a wheel that has little traction. Toyota says the system can help split power 50/50 between the rear wheels. That is a description of the lock’s potential contribution, not a guaranteed result in every situation or a laboratory measurement of trail performance.
Locking a differential does not make tire placement, throttle control or a safe recovery plan unnecessary. A locked axle can improve traction, but it can also increase tire scrub and load on driveline components when turning on high-grip surfaces. Use the exact engagement conditions and speed limits in the owner manual for your year and grade.
How the hardware differs from software controls
The center and rear locks are drivetrain hardware: they change how torque is coupled. Multi-Terrain Select is a control strategy that changes wheel-spin management for a selected surface. Crawl Control is a low-speed speed-management function. These systems may be used in combination when the vehicle’s manual allows it, but they solve different problems.
What is Crawl Control?
Crawl Control is Toyota’s low-speed off-road cruise-control function. Toyota says it maintains one of five selectable speeds, allowing the driver to concentrate on steering while the system controls the vehicle’s pace. It is intended for situations where maintaining a steady walking-speed-like crawl is difficult with the accelerator and brake alone, such as uneven climbs, descents or technical surfaces.
Rank #2
What Crawl Control controls—and what it does not
- It controls: low-speed propulsion and braking inputs to hold the selected crawl speed, within the operating limits specified for that vehicle.
- You still control: steering, route choice, observation and the decision to stop.
- It is not: autonomous driving, obstacle detection or a substitute for attention. The driver must remain ready to intervene.
The five-speed choice is a control-resolution feature, not a claim that every Land Cruiser travels at five fixed, universally identical speeds. Surface, gradient, tire grip and the vehicle’s selected drivetrain range affect what the system can achieve. Toyota’s public descriptions do not replace the model-specific activation procedure, prerequisites or cancellation conditions in the owner manual.
When Crawl Control is useful
Crawl Control is most useful when the challenge is maintaining a consistent, very low pace while steering around rocks, ruts or loose ground. If the main problem is wheel spin on mud or sand, Multi-Terrain Select is the relevant adjustment. If the problem is that one wheel or axle is unloaded, a differential lock may provide the mechanical traction change. Crawl Control can manage speed while those traction tools do their separate jobs, provided the manual permits that combination.
What do the terrain modes do?
Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) adjusts wheel-spin control for different surfaces. Toyota’s 2024 description says it operates in both four-wheel-drive high and low ranges and cites mud, dirt and sand as examples of terrain choices. The system changes the way the vehicle responds to available grip; it does not physically lock an axle or create traction where the tires have none.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy wheel-spin calibration matters
Different surfaces need different amounts and timing of slip. A strategy that quickly limits spin on a firm, uneven trail may bog the vehicle in deep sand, while a calibration that permits more momentum-building spin can be counterproductive on a slick, rutted climb. MTS is designed to alter that balance through the vehicle’s traction-control logic.

Mode names and model-year caution
Do not assume a single mode list applies to every Land Cruiser. Toyota’s 2025 manual quick-reference material lists five mode names, while the general 2024 launch description gives surface examples rather than a universal list for every year and grade. The 2025 index is a separate model-year reference, and the 2026 brochure confirms the feature’s continuing positioning without establishing identical equipment or labels on every trim. Select only the modes shown for your vehicle and follow its on-screen prompts and manual.
MTS versus Crawl Control
| Question | Multi-Terrain Select | Crawl Control |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Adjusts wheel-spin control for a chosen surface | Maintains a selected low vehicle speed |
| Driver’s main task | Steer and manage the route and speed | Steer and monitor while the system manages pace |
| Range stated by Toyota for 2024 | Works in 4WD High and 4WD Low | Low-speed off-road operation; exact conditions are manual-specific |
| What it cannot do | Physically lock a differential or guarantee traction | Choose a safe line, identify obstacles or replace driver attention |
In practical terms, MTS is a surface response setting; Crawl Control is a speed setting. They are complementary rather than competing names for the same feature.
What do the locking differentials do?
Lockers reduce the ability of a differential to let its outputs turn at different speeds. The Land Cruiser’s center lock addresses front-to-rear coupling, and its electronic rear locker addresses left-to-right coupling across the rear axle. Toyota’s 2026 brochure continues to describe electronically engaged center and rear locking differentials.

With the center differential locked, torque is coupled more evenly between the front and rear driveline paths. That can help when one end of the vehicle is on a significantly more slippery surface than the other. It does not ensure equal torque at every tire, because the front and rear differentials and tire contact conditions still matter.

Rear lock: left-to-right traction at the back
The rear locker is valuable when one rear tire is lightly loaded or on a slick patch. By coupling the rear wheels, it can keep the wheel with grip contributing instead of allowing the low-grip wheel to dominate the open-differential behavior. Steering angle, tire condition and the surface still determine how much forward motion is available.
Why lockers are not a substitute for line choice
A locker cannot bridge a gap, add clearance or prevent an underbody strike. It may increase driveline stress on high-traction surfaces and can affect turning behavior. Use it only in the situations and ranges specified by the manual, disengage it when the manual directs, and avoid treating the 50/50 description as a promise of identical real-world force at both tires.

Toyota’s MY2024 overview assigns features by grade rather than treating every Land Cruiser as identically equipped. The 1958 grade is listed with Crawl Control and Downhill Assist Control. The Land Cruiser grade is listed with Multi-Terrain Select, the Stabilizer Disconnect Mechanism (SDM) and Multi-Terrain Monitor. The First Edition has its own equipment mix.

Other trail aids that matter
Downhill Assist Control
Toyota says Downhill Assist Control limits vehicle speed on descents. That can reduce the need for repeated brake applications on a steep, loose slope, but the appropriate speed, activation method and operating limits are vehicle-specific. Toyota’s 2025 owner-manual index points to the relevant driving-support and drivetrain sections; consult the full manual before relying on the system.
Stabilizer Disconnect Mechanism
The SDM increases front-wheel articulation by disconnecting the front stabilizer bar when the vehicle’s system allows it. More articulation can help keep a tire in contact with uneven ground. It is grade-dependent in the MY2024 overview and does not increase ground clearance or remove the need to check roll stability.
Multi-Terrain Monitor
Multi-Terrain Monitor uses cameras to display areas around the vehicle that are difficult to see from the driver’s seat. Treat it as an observation aid, not proof that the path is clear. Camera views can be obscured by mud, darkness, weather or an obstacle outside the camera’s field of view; physically check the route when safe.

A practical decision process on the trail
- Identify the limiting problem. Is it insufficient front-to-rear coupling, a spinning wheel, an unsuitable wheel-spin response for the surface, or difficulty holding a steady low speed?
- Choose the appropriate range. Use the high or low range prescribed for the terrain and maneuver. Toyota specifically describes MTS as functional in both ranges on the 2024 vehicle; other feature conditions remain manual-specific.
- Select MTS when surface behavior is the issue. Choose only a mode offered by your exact vehicle and match it to the actual surface, such as mud, dirt or sand where those labels are provided.
- Use a locker when axle coupling is the issue. Apply the center or rear lock only under the conditions stated in the manual, and account for the effect on steering and driveline load.
- Use Crawl Control when pace is the issue. Select one of its five speeds, keep both hands available for steering and continue watching the terrain.
- Reassess continuously. Stop if traction, visibility, clearance or stability is deteriorating. Controls cannot compensate for an unsafe line or a vehicle beyond its physical limits.
Preparation, recovery and operating limits
Before a trail, verify the vehicle’s model year, grade, tire specification, recovery points and the exact manual instructions for each control. Toyota identifies off-road recovery gear among its Land Cruiser accessory categories, but that category reference does not validate any particular kit, component rating, brand or fitment. Match recovery equipment to the vehicle’s rated recovery points and the conditions, and inspect it before use.
- Read the drivetrain, four-wheel-drive, Crawl Control, MTS and Downhill Assist sections for the exact vehicle.
- Confirm which controls are fitted; dashboard icons and menus can differ by grade.
- Know how the system signals engagement, cancellation and a fault.
- Keep recovery equipment, communication and a route plan appropriate to the terrain.
- Do not infer performance guarantees from Toyota’s feature descriptions. No independent comparative trail test is established by the cited Toyota materials.
The bottom line for choosing a control
Think in three layers. The center and rear lockers are mechanical traction tools. Multi-Terrain Select changes wheel-spin behavior for a surface and, on the 2024 description, works in both 4WD High and 4WD Low. Crawl Control manages very low speed through one of five selectable settings while you steer. Downhill Assist Control limits descent speed, SDM can add front articulation on equipped grades, and Multi-Terrain Monitor improves visibility. Confirm the equipment and operating rules for the exact Land Cruiser before using any of them.
