Toyota did acknowledge a serious transmission problem affecting certain 2024 Tacoma pickups equipped with the automatic transmission. In technical service bulletin T-SB-0094-24, dated October 14, 2024, Toyota instructed dealers to replace the transmission assembly and torque converter when specific diagnostic trouble codes are confirmed.

This was not a blanket recall of every Tacoma. The bulletin applies to a defined group of 2024 Tacoma and Tacoma Hybrid vehicles in the United States and Mexico, subject to VIN and diagnostic criteria.

Toyota did acknowledge a serious transmission problem affecting certain 2024 Tacoma pickups equipped with the automatic transmission. In Toyota technical service bulletin T-SB-0094-24, dated October 14, 2024, the company identified a specific fault condition involving the automatic transmission and instructed dealers to replace the transmission assembly and torque converter when the required diagnostic trouble codes are present.

That is significant—but it is not the same as recalling every 2024 Tacoma, declaring that every fourth-generation Tacoma will fail, or proving that all Tacoma transmission complaints have the same cause. The bulletin applies to a defined group of U.S. and Mexico-market 2024 Tacoma and Tacoma Hybrid vehicles that meet Toyota’s diagnostic criteria.

What Toyota’s Tacoma transmission bulletin says

T-SB-0094-24 covers 2024 Toyota Tacoma and Tacoma Hybrid vehicles with an automatic-transmission malfunction-indicator-light condition and one or more specified diagnostic trouble codes. The listed codes are:

  • P07407F
  • P074571
  • P079571
  • P08BA71
  • P271371
  • P280771
  • P281671

These codes relate to torque-converter-clutch and pressure-control-solenoid actuator conditions. In other words, this is not simply a bulletin about a mildly harsh shift or a driver’s subjective impression that the truck is changing gears poorly. Toyota supplied a formal diagnostic path tied to specific electronic fault conditions.

When the listed condition is confirmed on a gasoline-powered Tacoma, Toyota’s repair instruction is to replace the automatic transmission assembly and torque converter. For a Tacoma Hybrid, the prescribed repair also includes replacement of the hybrid module.

The later bulletin broadened the application to Tacoma Hybrid vehicles and superseded the earlier T-SB-0076-24. The practical point for owners is that a confirmed case may call for replacement of major transmission components—not merely a fluid change, software reset, or adjustment.

Is this a recall?

No—not in the ordinary regulatory sense. Toyota handled this transmission condition through a technical service bulletin rather than a universal safety-recall campaign.

A technical service bulletin is a manufacturer communication that tells dealers how to diagnose and repair a known condition. A safety recall is a formal campaign involving a safety defect or failure to comply with a federal safety standard. A bulletin can still describe an expensive and serious problem, but it does not automatically mean that every vehicle of that model year is covered or that every owner receives a blanket replacement.

Contemporary reporting described the transmission action as applying to certain VINs and vehicles that met the bulletin’s diagnostic conditions. It was not an instruction to replace the automatic transmission in every 2024 Tacoma.

This distinction also explains why an owner may not see the transmission bulletin listed as an open recall in a VIN search. Separate Tacoma safety recalls may appear in the same search, but they are not necessarily connected to the transmission condition described by T-SB-0094-24.

Which Tacomas are covered?

The bulletin’s documented scope is:

  • Model year: 2024
  • Models: Toyota Tacoma and Tacoma Hybrid
  • Market: United States and Mexico
  • Transmission: The automatic-transmission condition described by the bulletin
  • Eligibility: Vehicles that meet Toyota’s diagnostic and VIN-related requirements

The six-speed manual Tacoma is not affected by this particular automatic-transmission replacement action, according to contemporary reporting. That does not mean a manual Tacoma is immune from every possible mechanical or electrical problem; it means this specific bulletin concerns the automatic transmission assembly and its related components.

Toyota’s public material located for this issue does not establish a complete article-facing VIN list or a precise percentage of 2024 Tacomas that could experience the condition. Reports of failures at very low mileage are important context, but they are owner reports and professional-media accounts—not a statistically representative failure rate.

What symptoms should owners watch for?

Reported symptoms have included a malfunction indicator light, loss of gears, severe shifting abnormalities, and trucks becoming difficult to drive. Those symptoms deserve prompt attention, particularly if they occur together or appear suddenly.

However, not every Tacoma complaint about harsh shifting, gear hunting, hesitation, unusual noise, or software behavior is automatically covered by T-SB-0094-24. A symptom that resembles an online report may have a different cause, may involve a different production range, or may not generate one of the codes listed in the bulletin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most useful combination of evidence is:

  • the truck’s VIN and production information;
  • the exact warning lights displayed;
  • the diagnostic trouble codes stored in the vehicle;
  • when and how the problem occurred; and
  • the dealer’s diagnostic results and repair recommendation.

What owners should do if the Tacoma is shifting badly

  1. Prioritize safety. If the truck loses drive, cannot select the expected gear, slips severely, or becomes difficult to control in traffic, stop driving when it is safe and arrange towing rather than attempting to nurse it to a dealership.
  2. Record the symptoms. Note the mileage, speed, temperature, drive mode, road conditions, warning messages, and whether the problem clears after switching the ignition off and on. Photograph dashboard warnings if possible.
  3. Do not erase the codes. Clearing trouble codes can remove useful diagnostic information. Avoid disconnecting the battery merely to make the warning light disappear.
  4. Request a Toyota dealer diagnosis. Ask the dealer to check the vehicle against T-SB-0094-24 and to document the exact stored codes. A dealer scan is important because bulletin eligibility and warranty handling are not determined by a generic internet symptom match.
  5. Ask for the repair order. Keep copies of the diagnostic report, codes, technician notes, parts replaced, mileage, and any towing documentation.

An OBD2 scanner for checking trouble codes can be useful for preliminary information gathering. It may tell an owner whether the vehicle has stored codes and help preserve a record before service. It cannot determine whether Toyota will approve a bulletin repair, establish VIN eligibility, diagnose every transmission problem, or replace the dealer’s scan and inspection. Do not clear the codes after scanning.

Check recalls separately by VIN

Every Tacoma owner should check the truck’s VIN in Toyota’s recall system and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recall database. A model-year article cannot determine whether an individual vehicle has an open campaign, because recall status depends on the exact VIN, equipment, production range, previous repairs, and sometimes the vehicle’s current software or label configuration.

Open safety recalls are generally repaired by a dealer at no charge. A recall or bulletin does not prove that a particular truck is unsafe at that exact moment, but an unresolved safety recall should be scheduled promptly—especially when it concerns braking, steering, driveline components, or the ability to display vehicle speed and warnings.

Vehicles or component Reported issue Listed remedy
Certain 2024–2025 Tacoma 4WD vehicles Mud and dirt can accumulate inside the rear wheels and damage the rear brake hoses, potentially causing a brake-fluid leak and reduced braking ability. Replace both rear brake hoses.
Certain 2023–2025 Toyota vehicles, including Tacoma Instrument-panel software may fail to display vehicle speed and certain warning indicators at startup. Software update or, in some cases, inspection and replacement of the instrument-panel assembly.
Certain 2025 Tacoma and Tacoma Hybrid vehicles A front-driveshaft constant-velocity joint may deform and break, potentially impairing steering or allowing rollaway in full-time 4WD when the parking brake is not applied. Inspect and replace both front driveshaft assemblies as necessary.
Certain 2024–2025 Tacoma vehicles included in a 2026 campaign An incorrect load-capacity modification label may result from accessory weights being miscalculated in software, creating a risk of loading the vehicle beyond its capacity. Replace the label.

Earlier Tacoma campaigns included 2022–2023 rear-axle fastener or debris concerns and a 2023 steering-column spiral-cable issue that could deactivate the driver airbag if an electrical connection separated. Those are separate campaigns with separate remedies.

What this means for someone buying a used 2024 Tacoma

A used 2024 Tacoma automatic is not automatically a bad purchase, but the transmission history should be treated as a central part of the inspection.

Before buying, obtain the VIN and:

  • verify recall status with Toyota and NHTSA;
  • ask whether the truck was evaluated under T-SB-0094-24;
  • confirm whether the transmission, torque converter, and—on a Hybrid—the hybrid module were replaced;
  • request the complete service records and repair order;
  • check for warning lights, stored codes, delayed engagement, slipping, harsh shifts, or inability to select gears; and
  • pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection, ideally including a scan of all relevant vehicle modules.

A Tacoma outside the bulletin’s covered population is not guaranteed to be problem-free. Conversely, a truck that received the prescribed replacement is not necessarily a bad vehicle; the repair history changes the risk assessment and may be preferable to an identical truck with no documentation.

Do not assume that the bulletin creates a blanket buyback right, a warranty extension, or a guaranteed future replacement. Those outcomes would depend on Toyota’s written terms and the individual VIN, warranty status, diagnosis, and repair history.

The bottom line on Toyota’s “big Tacoma problem”

Toyota did acknowledge a real and potentially expensive automatic-transmission failure condition in certain 2024 Tacomas. Its own bulletin identifies specific fault codes and directs dealers to replace major transmission components when the condition is confirmed. That is stronger evidence than a collection of forum posts.

But the accurate conclusion is narrower than “Toyota recalled all Tacomas” or “every 2024 Tacoma transmission will fail.” The documented action covers certain 2024 automatic-equipped Tacoma and Tacoma Hybrid vehicles that meet Toyota’s diagnostic criteria. Owners need a VIN-specific recall check and a dealer diagnosis, not a blanket internet verdict.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Toyota recall every 2024 Tacoma because of the transmission problem?

No. Toyota handled the documented transmission condition through technical service bulletin T-SB-0094-24, not a universal safety recall for every 2024 Tacoma. Coverage depends on the vehicle’s VIN and whether the listed diagnostic conditions are confirmed.

Which diagnostic codes are associated with the Tacoma transmission bulletin?

The bulletin lists P07407F, P074571, P079571, P08BA71, P271371, P280771, and P281671. These codes relate to torque-converter-clutch and pressure-control-solenoid actuator conditions.

What repair does Toyota prescribe for the affected Tacoma?

Toyota directs dealers to replace the automatic transmission assembly and torque converter on gasoline Tacomas. On Tacoma Hybrid vehicles, the repair also includes the hybrid module.

What should I do if my 2024 Tacoma is shifting badly?

Use the truck’s VIN to check Toyota’s recall system and NHTSA’s recall database, then ask a Toyota dealer to diagnose the truck against T-SB-0094-24. A generic code reader cannot determine bulletin eligibility or warranty coverage.

Are manual-transmission Tacomas included?

The documented action concerns the automatic-transmission condition. Contemporary reporting said the six-speed manual Tacoma was not affected by this particular bulletin, although that does not rule out unrelated problems.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Toyota’s T-SB-0094-24 confirms a serious automatic-transmission condition in certain 2024 Tacoma and Tacoma Hybrid vehicles. If the specified trouble codes are present, Toyota directs dealers to replace the transmission assembly and torque converter—and the hybrid module on Tacoma Hybrid models. It is a targeted technical service bulletin, not a universal recall of every Tacoma.
