Short answer: The 2026 Ford F-150 Raptor R is the extreme version of the regular Raptor. It swaps the Raptor’s 450-hp twin-turbo V6 for a 720-hp supercharged V8, adds standard 37-inch tires and specialized suspension tuning, and costs substantially more. The regular Raptor is the better choice for most buyers; the Raptor R is for those who specifically want the V8-powered flagship.
At a glance: Raptor R vs. Raptor
The 2026 Ford F-150 Raptor R is the higher-performance version of the regular 2026 F-150 Raptor, not a separate truck body or platform. Both are SuperCrew 4×4 pickups with 5.5-foot beds, 10-speed automatic transmissions, specialized off-road suspension, and the same basic high-speed desert-running mission.

The regular Raptor is the better choice for most buyers. It delivers the core Raptor suspension and off-road experience for substantially less money. The Raptor R makes sense when its 720-horsepower supercharged V8, sharper flagship hardware, engine sound, and high-speed performance are the main reasons you want the truck.
The biggest difference is the engine
The regular Raptor uses Ford’s 3.5-liter high-output EcoBoost twin-turbo V6. It produces 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque, which is already a substantial output for an off-road pickup. Its torque arrives at relatively low engine speed, an advantage when the truck needs controlled thrust on steep or loose terrain as well as strong acceleration on pavement.

The Raptor R replaces that V6 with a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 rated at 720 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque. That is a 270-hp advantage and a 130-lb-ft torque advantage over the standard Raptor. Ford identifies the supercharged V8 as exclusive to the Raptor R and the most powerful engine available in an F-150 Raptor.
Those numbers do not tell the entire story, but they do explain the Raptor R’s purpose. The extra output is mainly for harder acceleration, stronger throttle response, high-speed desert running, and the sound and character of a supercharged V8. It does not transform the Raptor R into a fundamentally more useful work truck.
Both versions still use a 10-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. The Raptor R therefore adds much more power without changing the basic cab, bed, transmission, or truck architecture that makes the Raptor recognizable.
What does the Raptor R add beyond the regular Raptor?
The Raptor R combines its V8 with the more specialized end of the Raptor hardware. It comes with 37-inch all-terrain tires, Dual-Valve FOX Racing Shocks, and Raptor R-specific suspension tuning. The standard Raptor can also be configured with Dual-Valve FOX shocks and 37-inch tires through the available 37 Performance Package, so the distinction is not simply “basic suspension versus Raptor R suspension.”
The more accurate comparison is this:
- Base Raptor: V6, 35-inch all-terrain tires, and FOX Live Valve off-road suspension.
- Raptor with the 37 Performance Package: V6 with 37-inch tires and additional hardware that narrows part of the equipment gap.
- Raptor R: 720-hp supercharged V8, 37-inch tires, Dual-Valve FOX shocks, and Raptor R-specific tuning packaged together from the factory.
Exact wheel, tire, shock, appearance, and option content should be confirmed on the selected build sheet or window sticker. Equipment can change with model year, package, configuration, and market.
Suspension and off-road equipment
Both trucks are purpose-built performance off-roaders rather than ordinary F-150s with an appearance package. Ford lists sport-tuned front and rear shock absorbers, FOX Racing Shocks with Live Valve technology, Trail Control, Trail 1-Pedal Drive, Trail Turn Assist, Baja drive mode, heavy-duty skid plates, and a 4×4 Hi-Lock transfer case among the Raptor equipment.
The drive modes are designed to adapt the truck to different surfaces and driving tasks. Depending on the selected configuration, the Raptor system includes modes such as Baja, Rock Crawl, Mud/Rut, and Deep Snow/Sand. Baja is the mode most closely associated with fast desert driving, while Rock Crawl and the low-speed trail functions are aimed at controlled technical off-roading.
The Raptor R’s advantage is not that the regular Raptor lacks serious off-road equipment. Rather, the Raptor R starts with that same concept and adds the most powerful engine, standard 37-inch tires, Dual-Valve shocks, and model-specific calibration. A well-equipped regular Raptor can reproduce some of the Raptor R’s tire and suspension hardware, but it cannot reproduce the V8’s output or character.

35-inch versus 37-inch tires
The regular Raptor’s standard configuration uses 35-inch all-terrain tires. Thirty-seven-inch tires are available on the Raptor, while they are standard on the Raptor R.
The larger tires can improve obstacle clearance and approach geometry, which matters when crossing ruts, rocks, ledges, and uneven desert terrain. They also give the truck a more aggressive stance. However, 37s are not a free upgrade in practical terms.
- Replacement tires generally cost more.
- Larger, heavier tires can affect steering feel, acceleration, braking response, ride behavior, and fuel consumption.
- Available payload can be affected by tire and wheel weight, although the exact payload remains vehicle-specific.
- Wheel width, load rating, clearance, pressure, road legality, and spare-tire fitment must be checked before changing tire size.
- A 37-inch setup is most valuable to owners who will actually use the truck in terrain where the additional clearance matters.
If most of your driving is commuting, highway travel, or light recreational use, the 35-inch-tire Raptor may be the more sensible configuration. If you frequently drive fast over rough terrain or want the factory 37-inch setup without building the truck yourself, the Raptor R has a stronger case.
Price and value
Ford’s 2026 U.S. build-and-price information lists the regular F-150 Raptor at $79,005 starting MSRP. That is before destination charges, taxes, registration, dealer fees, and options.

A current Ford inventory example identifies a 2026 Raptor R with a $116,995 net MSRP. Because an inventory figure can reflect a particular configuration and equipment, it should not be treated as a universal base-trim price. Confirm the live Ford configurator, vehicle window sticker, destination charge, and dealer pricing before comparing transactions.
Using those two figures only as an indicative comparison, the example Raptor R is approximately $37,990 more expensive than the regular Raptor’s listed starting point. That difference buys a different powertrain and flagship equipment, not a proportionally more practical pickup.
There is also an important value distinction. A regular Raptor buyer can use some of the price difference for the 37 Performance Package, protection equipment, recovery equipment, replacement tires, fuel, or other ownership costs. The Raptor R buyer is paying for the V8 and the complete flagship experience. If the supercharged engine is not a priority, the Raptor R’s additional price is difficult to justify on utility alone.
Weight and everyday usability
Ford lists the regular Raptor at 5,710 pounds in its high-output V6 configuration. The Raptor with the 37 Performance Package is listed at 5,867 pounds, while the Raptor R is listed at 5,950 pounds. Actual curb weight varies with equipment and options.

The Raptor R is therefore approximately 240 pounds heavier than the listed 35-inch-tire regular Raptor configuration. The 37 Performance Package brings the published regular-Raptor figure much closer, but the vehicles should still be compared using their individual window stickers rather than a generic trim estimate.
Both trucks retain the useful SuperCrew cab and 5.5-foot bed. That makes either one viable as a daily driver and recreational pickup, but neither is the most efficient F-150 for ordinary work. Their wide bodies, tall ride height, large tires, performance hardware, and higher running costs are compromises you accept in exchange for off-road capability.
For routine hauling, fleet use, long-distance commuting, or maximum payload per dollar, a conventional F-150 configuration is likely to be more practical. The Raptor models are most compelling when recreational performance is part of the brief.
Towing: do not assume the Raptor R is automatically better
Towing capacity depends on the exact truck, equipment, accessories, passengers, trailer setup, and other factors. The headline maximum from another F-150 configuration cannot be applied automatically to either Raptor.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →As configuration-specific examples, a current Ford inventory listing for a V6 Raptor shows an 8,200-pound maximum trailer rating, while a Raptor R inventory example shows 8,700 pounds. Those figures are not universal model-wide ratings, and they do not establish that every Raptor R can tow more than every regular Raptor.
Before towing with either truck, verify the following for that specific vehicle:
- The door-jamb certification label.
- The vehicle’s window sticker and factory equipment.
- Ford’s trailer-rating chart.
- The owner’s manual.
- Actual passengers, cargo, tongue weight, hitch equipment, and trailer brakes.
The Raptor R’s extra horsepower can make it feel more effortless under acceleration, but that is not the same as having a universally higher safe towing rating. Choose the truck based on its certified rating and your trailer, not on the V8 badge alone.
Fuel economy and operating costs
The available inventory examples show the expected efficiency penalty for the more powerful Raptor R. One V6 Raptor listing shows EPA-estimated fuel economy of 14 mpg city and 18 mpg highway. A 720-hp Raptor R listing shows 10 mpg city and 15 mpg highway.

These are configuration-specific figures from vehicle listings, not a guarantee for every truck. Verify the EPA label on the exact vehicle, especially when comparing tire packages and options.
The Raptor R will also usually be the more expensive truck to operate. Its larger engine and lower fuel-economy figures can increase fuel spending, while its 37-inch tires, performance components, and specialized replacement parts can raise consumable and repair costs. Insurance and maintenance pricing vary by driver, location, provider, usage, and dealer, so a precise annual ownership-cost figure should not be assumed without current quotes.
Before buying, price the items that matter to your use: fuel at your expected annual mileage, replacement tires, insurance, routine service, and any recovery or protection equipment you plan to add. The purchase-price gap is only one part of the Raptor R decision.
Which F-150 Raptor should you buy?
Choose the regular Raptor if you want:
- The defining Raptor chassis and high-speed off-road capability at the lower entry price.
- A better balance between performance, daily driving, and ownership cost.
- A 35-inch setup for a little less tire expense and a more rational street-oriented configuration.
- The option to add the 37 Performance Package without paying for a V8 you do not specifically want.
- A truck for mixed commuting, recreation, and occasional towing.
Choose the Raptor R if you want:
- The 720-hp supercharged V8 above everything else.
- More acceleration, engine character, sound, and emotional appeal.
- Standard 37-inch tires and Dual-Valve FOX hardware as part of the factory flagship package.
- A truck focused more heavily on high-speed desert performance than value.
- To own the top version of the Raptor lineup and accept that some of its capability may go unused.
A cheaper way to enjoy the Raptor idea
If what appeals to you is the Raptor nameplate, shape, or collectible side rather than owning the truck itself, the LEGO Technic Ford F-150 Raptor is a licensed model kit from the 2021 model-year Raptor era. The Raptor R is not a separate body style
Both versions use the SuperCrew cab and 5.5-foot bed. The Raptor R is a performance grade within the F-150 Raptor family, not a different cab, bed, or frame concept.
More horsepower does not mean more useful payload
The V8’s 720 horsepower is primarily a performance upgrade. Payload, towing, and cargo limits remain dependent on the particular truck’s certification label and equipment.
A regular Raptor can be configured closer to an R
Adding the 37 Performance Package and available Dual-Valve FOX shocks gives the regular Raptor some of the Raptor R’s tire and suspension equipment. It still has the 450-hp V6, however, and it should not be described as mechanically identical to the R.
The Raptor R’s value is emotional as much as technical
The standard Raptor already has the hardware needed for serious recreational off-roading. The Raptor R’s appeal comes from combining that capability with an unusually powerful supercharged V8. Buyers who do not value the engine’s response, sound, or exclusivity may find the regular Raptor the more satisfying financial decision.

Final verdict
The 2026 Ford F-150 Raptor is the performance-value choice: it offers 450 hp, sophisticated FOX suspension, four-wheel drive, Baja-oriented drive modes, and the option of 37-inch tires without the Raptor R’s very large price premium.
The 2026 Ford F-150 Raptor R is the no-compromise choice. Its 720-hp supercharged V8, 640 lb-ft of torque, standard 37-inch tires, and specialized suspension hardware make it the more extreme truck, but not automatically the better daily driver, tow vehicle, or value.
Buy the regular Raptor unless the supercharged V8 is the central reason you are shopping. Buy the Raptor R when the V8 and flagship experience are the point of the purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the main difference between the F-150 Raptor and Raptor R?
No. The regular 2026 F-150 Raptor is rated at 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque from its high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6. The Raptor R uses a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 producing 720 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Does the regular F-150 Raptor have 37-inch tires?
No. The regular Raptor uses 35-inch all-terrain tires in its base configuration, with 37-inch tires available through the 37 Performance Package. The Raptor R has 37-inch all-terrain tires as standard equipment.
Is the Raptor R better for towing?
Not universally. Exact towing capacity depends on configuration, equipment, passengers, accessories, and the specific vehicle’s certification information. Inventory examples show 8,200 pounds for one V6 Raptor and 8,700 pounds for one Raptor R, but those are not universal model-wide ratings.
Which is better for daily driving, the Raptor or Raptor R?
The regular Raptor is generally the better daily-driver value because it costs less and has better fuel-economy figures in the cited inventory examples. Both are wide, tall, specialized off-road trucks, so neither is as practical or economical as a conventional F-150 trim for routine commuting and hauling.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The regular Raptor is the smarter choice for most owners. The Raptor R is worth considering only if you specifically want its 720-hp supercharged V8, standard 37-inch tires, and flagship performance—and are prepared for the higher purchase and operating costs.
