Yes—but these are development engines, not announced production options. Toyota is working on new 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter inline-four engines designed to fit electrified vehicles and run on certain alternative fuels. A separate G20E engine has appeared in Toyota’s GR Yaris M Concept prototype. Toyota has not announced a consumer launch date or final production specifications.
What Toyota announced—and what it means
On May 28, 2024, Toyota, Subaru and Mazda announced a joint commitment to develop engines tailored to electrification and carbon neutrality. Toyota described the goal as combining more compact engines with electric drive systems and compatibility with a range of alternative fuels. The announcement concerns ongoing development, not engines available to buy.
Toyota’s 2024 Integrated Report identifies development of 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter inline-four engines. The 1.5-liter is being developed in naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions; the report also describes work on the 2.0-liter. These are development disclosures, not confirmed final specifications for production vehicles.
What is known about the engines
| Development engine | Disclosed details | What remains unconfirmed |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5-liter inline-four, naturally aspirated | Toyota says it is 10% smaller in volume and 10% lower in height than the company’s current 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine. | Final production specifications, vehicle applications and availability. |
| 1.5-liter inline-four, turbocharged | Toyota’s 2024 Integrated Report identifies it as a version under development. | Dimensions, output, final specifications, vehicle applications and availability. |
| 2.0-liter inline-four | Toyota’s 2024 Integrated Report describes it as under development. | Whether it will be naturally aspirated or turbocharged, plus final specifications, vehicle applications and availability. |
| G20E in GR Yaris M Concept | Toyota Europe’s March 2025 update describes it as an internal-combustion engine in a prototype capable of using carbon-neutral fuels or hydrogen. The prototype was to participate in Super Taikyu as part of development. | A production commitment, consumer launch date and final production specifications. |
The reported 10% reductions apply specifically to the naturally aspirated 1.5-liter development engine compared with Toyota’s current 1.5-liter three-cylinder. Toyota presents the smaller, lower design as useful for vehicle packaging, including lower hoods and aerodynamic design. That is the company’s engineering rationale, not an independently verified production result.

How the engines are intended to work with electrification
Toyota says the engines are being designed to integrate with motors, batteries and other electric drive units. In a hybrid vehicle, the electric motor can contribute to propulsion, so Toyota’s stated approach is that the combustion engine need not cover every driving range on its own. The aim is to develop a compact engine as part of an electrified system rather than as a standalone solution.
Compact dimensions may give vehicle designers more room to shape the front of a car, including a lower hood. Toyota links this packaging flexibility to aerodynamic design, but the cited disclosures do not provide independently tested vehicle efficiency or performance figures.

Which fuels has Toyota named?
Toyota’s May 2024 announcement names e-fuel (synthetic fuel), biofuels and liquid hydrogen as alternative fuels under consideration. Toyota defines carbon-neutral fuels as fuels that can reduce CO₂ emissions across the product life cycle. That definition does not mean zero emissions from the tailpipe, and it does not establish identical lifecycle emissions for every fuel listed.
The G20E prototype update uses different wording: Toyota Europe says the GR Yaris M Concept can use carbon-neutral fuels or hydrogen. It does not establish that every engine in development can use every fuel in Toyota’s broader list, or that those fuels are interchangeable in existing cars. The disclosures also do not establish broad availability of these fuels to everyday drivers.

When will Toyota’s new engines be available?
Toyota has not provided a consumer availability date in the cited announcements. Its disclosures establish that engine development is under way and that the G20E has been used in a prototype; they do not confirm a retail engine, a production vehicle application or final specifications. Super Taikyu participation by the GR Yaris M Concept is part of development, not evidence by itself of a production launch.
