SEMA reports that its naturally aspirated, 420-cubic-inch TRD NASCAR Cup-series truck engine sits in a custom tube-chassis vehicle built for drifting, rallycross and road racing. Only the Tacoma’s doors and roof remained original equipment components.
What is the 900-hp Tacoma?
SEMA identifies it as a 2020 Toyota Tacoma built by Brad DeBerti of DeBerti Products in Mooresville, North Carolina. SEMA’s 2021 Battle of the Builders coverage describes a naturally aspirated TRD NASCAR Cup-series truck engine displacing 420 cubic inches and producing 900 hp. Those are published build specifications, not independent measurements. The truck was categorized as Truck/Off-Road, despite its road-racing and drifting ambitions. SEMA’s build account provides the detailed specifications.
Its builder described the design goal as a blend of open-wheel racing and hot-rod style. SEMA quotes DeBerti: “Built to combine the design of an Indy Car and the design of hot rod into one vehicle, this Tacoma was completely built from the ground up in only 90 days, Brad DeBerti said.”
How much of a Tacoma remained?
Very little of the original truck’s structure or mechanical package defined the finished racer. SEMA says the build began from the ground up in 90 days and that only the doors and roof remained original equipment components. A custom Tekk Consulting tube chassis formed its foundation; Advanced Fiberglass Concepts supplied custom bodywork. Carscoops also reported a new steel frame, full roll cage, bespoke bed and custom panels. This was a Tacoma-shaped purpose-built race vehicle, not a stock-frame pickup conversion.

Purpose-built body and weight distribution
The fiberglass bodywork included fenders, a roof scoop, rear diffuser, front splitter and side skirts, machined from high-density foam, according to SEMA. The fuel cell and radiator were moved rearward to help achieve a 50/50 front-to-rear weight distribution. SEMA says TRD provided technical assistance with aerodynamic development; Gibson headers fed a TRD-designed tri-Y exhaust.
What makes it a drift truck—and what else can it do?
Its steering is a major clue: SEMA reports a custom 74-degree steering angle intended to enable extreme drifting maneuvers. Carscoops described the project as targeting drifting, rallycross and road racing. The large steering angle is a build-specific race feature, not a normal Tacoma specification or a simple bolt-on upgrade.

The range of intended disciplines helps explain the combination of drift-oriented steering and broader race hardware. The sources describe the project’s intended uses; they do not establish a particular race result or prove that the truck competed in every listed discipline.
How does the power reach the rear wheels?
SEMA lists a six-speed sequential transmission behind the V8. A QA1 carbon-fiber driveshaft sends power to a QA1-damped RTS Winters quick-change rearend. SEMA gives that rearend a 2,000-hp rating; that figure is a component rating, not the engine’s output.

The rest of the chassis package is similarly competition-focused: center-lock Forgeline wheels, BFGoodrich tires, Alcon brakes and nitrogen-actuated air jacks. A DeBerti-designed hand brake sits in the cabin. These are reported parts on this particular build, not standard Tacoma equipment or a documented ready-made conversion kit.

SEMA reports extensive carbon-fiber use, AEM electronics, a Switch Pros power panel and a Safecraft fire extinguisher. The cabin has three Sparco racing seats and harnesses. Together with the full roll cage reported by Carscoops, that equipment underscores the truck’s race purpose rather than everyday pickup use.
