Toyota i-FORCE MAX is a performance-focused hybrid powertrain used in Toyota’s body-on-frame trucks and SUVs. It combines a turbocharged gasoline engine, an electric motor-generator, a high-voltage battery and an automatic transmission.

The name does not describe one universal engine. Tundra and Sequoia use a twin-turbocharged V6 system, while Tacoma, 4Runner and Land Cruiser use a turbocharged four-cylinder system. Both deliver their biggest advantage in the same place: immediate low-speed torque that helps with towing, steep grades, launches and technical off-road driving.

What is Toyota i-FORCE MAX?

i-FORCE MAX is Toyota’s non-plug-in hybrid powertrain for selected trucks and SUVs. The electric motor sits between the gasoline engine and transmission, where it can assist acceleration, start the engine, propel the vehicle at low speeds under suitable conditions and recover energy during deceleration.

Unlike a plug-in hybrid, an i-FORCE MAX vehicle does not use an external charging cable. The battery is replenished automatically through regenerative braking and by the gasoline engine. The system can also shut the engine off at a stop and restart it when power is needed.

There are currently two substantially different i-FORCE MAX configurations in the U.S.:

Powertrain Vehicles Gasoline engine Transmission Combined output
Twin-turbo V6 i-FORCE MAX Tundra, Sequoia 3.4/3.445-liter twin-turbo V6 10-speed automatic 437 hp, 583 lb.-ft. of torque
Four-cylinder i-FORCE MAX Tacoma, 4Runner, Land Cruiser 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder 8-speed automatic 326 net combined hp, 465 lb.-ft. of torque

How the hybrid system works

The electric motor supplies torque as soon as the accelerator is pressed. That response helps reduce the delay that can occur while a turbocharged engine builds exhaust flow and boost pressure. The gasoline engine then contributes more power as engine speed and load increase.

During braking or deceleration, the motor works as a generator. Instead of losing all of that kinetic energy as heat through the brake system, some of it is converted into electrical energy and stored in the hybrid battery. The battery can then send power back to the motor during acceleration.

This is a relatively compact performance-hybrid arrangement, not an electric drivetrain. Electric-only operation is limited by battery charge, speed, temperature, accelerator input and vehicle load. Drivers should not expect an i-FORCE MAX truck or SUV to travel long distances without the gasoline engine running.

The main benefit: strong low-rpm torque

The most useful advantage is not simply the horsepower figure. It is the motor’s immediate response at low engine speeds.

Toyota lists peak torque at approximately 2,400 rpm for the V6 system and 1,700 rpm for the four-cylinder system. That makes the powertrain well suited to situations where a vehicle needs controlled force before the turbocharged engine reaches its strongest output.

  • Pulling away from a stop with a trailer attached
  • Climbing a steep driveway, grade or trail section
  • Crawling over rocks, sand or loose surfaces
  • Accelerating into traffic from a low speed
  • Carrying a heavy payload in the bed or cabin

In practice, the electric motor can make throttle response feel more immediate and reduce the need for the transmission to make an abrupt downshift. It does not make every i-FORCE MAX vehicle equally capable, however. Frame strength, suspension, tires, gearing, four-wheel-drive hardware and vehicle weight still determine the final towing and off-road limits.

Twin-turbo V6 i-FORCE MAX: Tundra and Sequoia

Toyota Tundra

The available i-FORCE MAX powertrain in the 2026 Tundra produces 437 horsepower and 583 lb.-ft. of torque. Its electric motor-generator and clutch are located inside the bell housing between the twin-turbo V6 and the 10-speed automatic transmission.

The hybrid battery is a 288-volt sealed nickel-metal-hydride unit mounted beneath the rear passenger seats. That location helps keep the battery protected within the cabin rather than placing it in the truck bed.

Depending on configuration, the 2026 Tundra can tow up to 12,000 pounds and carry up to 1,850 pounds of payload. Those are maximum figures, not ratings that apply to every cab, bed, drivetrain or trim.

The Tundra’s 10-speed transmission includes sequential shift control, uphill/downhill shift logic and TOW/HAUL modes. These features work with the hybrid motor’s low-speed torque to make trailer starts and grades easier to manage.

Toyota Sequoia

The 2026 Sequoia uses the V6 i-FORCE MAX as its standard powertrain throughout the lineup. It makes the same 437 hp and 583 lb.-ft. as the Tundra system.

The Sequoia can tow up to 9,500 pounds, depending on configuration, and reaches an EPA-estimated 22 mpg combined in qualifying versions. Rear-wheel drive is available, while part-time four-wheel drive is offered on certain grades. It is not accurate to describe every Sequoia as having full-time four-wheel drive.

Four-cylinder i-FORCE MAX: Tacoma, 4Runner and Land Cruiser

Toyota Tacoma

The Tacoma’s i-FORCE MAX combines a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a 48-hp electric motor, a 1.87-kWh nickel-metal-hydride battery and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Total system output is 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. For 2026, i-FORCE MAX is offered on grades including TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, TRD Pro and Trailhunter, although exact availability depends on cab, drivetrain and package configuration.

Some i-FORCE MAX Tacoma versions are rated as high as 22 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. Maximum towing varies by configuration. Toyota’s 2026 Tacoma materials list i-FORCE MAX ratings including 6,000, 6,300 and 6,400 pounds, so buyers should check the rating for the specific cab, bed, trim and equipment combination.

Toyota 4Runner

The 2026 4Runner’s four-cylinder i-FORCE MAX produces up to 326 net combined horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. It can tow up to 6,000 pounds and returns up to an EPA-estimated 23 mpg combined, depending on configuration.

i-FORCE MAX is standard on the Platinum, TRD Pro and Trailhunter grades. It is available on TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium and Limited models. Every i-FORCE MAX 4Runner has four-wheel drive.

Tow/Haul mode is standard on all i-FORCE MAX 4Runner grades. It adjusts throttle response and transmission behavior for towing, helping the vehicle hold the appropriate gear and respond more predictably under load.

Toyota Land Cruiser

The 2026 Land Cruiser uses the four-cylinder i-FORCE MAX exclusively. The system includes a 2.4-liter turbocharged inline-four, an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission, and a 1.87-kWh nickel-metal-hydride battery.

Output is 326 net combined horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. Full-time four-wheel drive is standard, along with an EPA-estimated 23 mpg combined and a maximum towing rating of 6,000 pounds.

The Land Cruiser also includes standard Crawl Control. Depending on grade, equipment can include Multi-Terrain Select, a locking rear differential, a locking center differential and Multi-Terrain Monitor. These features are separate from the hybrid system but complement its low-speed torque when driving off pavement.

Does i-FORCE MAX improve fuel economy?

Hybrid assistance can improve efficiency by recovering energy during deceleration, shutting the engine off at stops and allowing the electric motor to handle some low-speed work. However, i-FORCE MAX is primarily engineered to add performance and response. It is not automatically the most fuel-efficient version of every Toyota truck or SUV.

EPA ratings vary according to vehicle, body style, drivetrain, wheel and tire package, trim and towing equipment. Representative 2026 figures include:

Vehicle Maximum or listed EPA rating
Tundra i-FORCE MAX Up to 22 mpg combined
Sequoia i-FORCE MAX Up to 22 mpg combined
4Runner i-FORCE MAX Up to 23 mpg combined
Land Cruiser i-FORCE MAX 23 mpg combined
Tacoma i-FORCE MAX Up to 22 city/24 highway mpg on listed configurations

These numbers should not be applied to every trim. Larger wheels, aggressive off-road tires, four-wheel drive, added equipment and a heavier body can all change the official rating.

Towing, off-road driving and onboard power

i-FORCE MAX is particularly useful when a vehicle is repeatedly asked to move at low speed under heavy load. The motor’s immediate torque can make trailer launches smoother and help maintain momentum on a technical trail.

Toyota pairs the hybrid system with equipment that varies by model and grade, including:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • TOW/HAUL driving modes
  • Crawl Control
  • Downhill Assist Control
  • Multi-Terrain Select
  • Trailer-assistance systems on selected vehicles
  • An available 2,400-watt AC power supply on several i-FORCE MAX models

These features do not eliminate the need to verify the vehicle’s specific tow rating. A trailer’s loaded weight, tongue weight, hitch equipment, passengers and cargo all count toward the vehicle’s limits. The maximum listed for a Tundra, Tacoma, 4Runner or Land Cruiser is not interchangeable with the rating of another model.

What i-FORCE MAX is not

Several common descriptions of the system are inaccurate:

Claim What is actually true
“i-FORCE MAX is one engine.” There are V6 and four-cylinder configurations with different motors, batteries, transmissions and outputs.
“Every i-FORCE MAX makes 437 hp.” The V6 system makes 437 hp; the four-cylinder system makes up to 326 net combined hp.
“The 48-hp motor adds to the V6 to create 437 hp.” The 48-hp motor figure belongs to the four-cylinder system. The V6 uses a different motor-generator arrangement.
“It is a plug-in hybrid.” The battery charges through regenerative braking and the gasoline engine. There is no external charging port.
“The battery is an EV-sized pack.” The smaller vehicles use a compact 1.87-kWh NiMH battery; the Tundra uses a sealed 288-volt NiMH battery.
“The maximum tow rating applies to every trim.” Towing capacity changes with drivetrain, cab, bed, tires, trim and equipment.

Is Toyota i-FORCE MAX worth choosing?

i-FORCE MAX makes the strongest case for buyers who want a conventional gasoline-powered truck or SUV but need better low-speed response. It preserves an automatic transmission, body-on-frame construction and towing-oriented hardware while adding electric assistance where it is most noticeable.

The right choice depends on the vehicle’s intended job. A Tundra or Sequoia buyer benefits from the V6 system’s 437 hp and 583 lb.-ft. of torque. A Tacoma, 4Runner or Land Cruiser buyer gets the smaller four-cylinder system’s 326 hp and 465 lb.-ft., with different towing, drivetrain and off-road hardware.
