A good three-row SUV has to do more than offer two extra seats. The third row should be usable, the cargo area should cope with a stroller or sports gear, and the vehicle should remain manageable when the family is not on board. Safety results, fuel economy, towing ability, and purchase price matter too.
There is no single official expert ranking of 2025 three-row SUVs. This list synthesizes recommendations and testing from Kelley Blue Book, Car and Driver, Edmunds, MotorTrend, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The rankings are organized by the kind of family each SUV suits best rather than by one universal score.

1. 2025 Kia Telluride: best overall value
The Telluride remains one of the easiest three-row SUVs to recommend to a typical family. It combines a genuinely useful cabin with a comfortable ride, a straightforward control layout, and enough standard equipment that buyers do not need to climb to the most expensive trim for basic family convenience.

The 2025 model also earned a five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. That combination gives the Telluride a particularly strong case for families that want safety credentials without moving into a luxury-brand price range.

The second row is comfortable for adults, while the third row is more accommodating than the cramped rear seats found in many midsize SUVs. It is still worth taking a child seat to the dealership: the location of lower anchors and the space needed to tilt or remove a second-row seat can affect daily usability.
Best fit: Families wanting a polished, well-equipped three-row SUV without the size and expense of a full-size Tahoe or Expedition.
2. 2025 Honda Pilot: best balanced mainstream three-row SUV
The Pilot is a sensible choice for buyers who want one vehicle to handle school runs, road trips, bad weather, and occasional light-duty towing. It does not have the largest third row in this group, but its overall layout is practical and its driving manners are predictable.

Kelley Blue Book includes the Pilot among its best three-row family vehicles. The 2025–2026 Pilot has an IIHS Top Safety Pick designation under the current criteria. That is a strong result, but it is not the same as Top Safety Pick+, so buyers should keep the distinction clear when comparing safety claims.
One useful Pilot feature is its flexible second-row arrangement on applicable configurations. Depending on trim and equipment, the center section can be removed to create easier access to the third row. Confirm whether the vehicle on the dealer’s lot includes the configuration you want; trim-level differences matter more than a brochure summary suggests.
Best fit: Families seeking a comfortable, conventional SUV with manageable dimensions and no unusual learning curve.
3. 2025 Toyota Grand Highlander: best for third-row and cargo usability
The Grand Highlander solves a common problem with three-row SUVs: adding a third row without leaving enough room behind it for luggage. Its larger body gives rear passengers and cargo more usable space than the regular Toyota Highlander.

That distinction is important. Edmunds describes the standard Highlander’s third row as small and its cargo area as limited. The Grand Highlander is the better Toyota choice when adults may use the third row or when all three rows need to remain upright on a family trip.
Toyota also offers hybrid powertrains in the Grand Highlander range, which makes it appealing to high-mileage families. Do not assume that every hybrid version has identical acceleration, towing capacity, cargo space, or pricing. Compare the exact powertrain and trim rather than treating “Grand Highlander Hybrid” as one specification.
Best fit: Families that regularly carry six or seven people and need luggage space with every seat occupied.
4. 2025 Hyundai Palisade: best upscale mainstream alternative
The Palisade competes closely with the Telluride but leans toward a quieter, more upscale cabin and a relaxed highway experience. Its interior presentation and standard convenience equipment make it feel more expensive than many mainstream three-row SUVs.
It is a good choice for families who value comfortable seating and an attractive cabin more than sporty handling. The third row is suitable for children and workable for many adults on shorter journeys, although a full-size SUV remains the better answer for frequent adult use in the rearmost seats.
Safety labeling requires particular care with this model. The recently updated 2026 Palisade did not yet have complete NHTSA and IIHS coverage when Edmunds published its May 2026 safety roundup. That result should not be projected backward or forward automatically. When shopping for a 2025 Palisade, check the 2025 vehicle’s own NHTSA and IIHS records and confirm the build information where applicable.
Best fit: Families wanting a comfortable, feature-rich SUV with a near-luxury interior but mainstream running costs.

5. 2025 Chevrolet Tahoe: best for towing and maximum passenger capacity
The Tahoe is not simply a larger version of a midsize SUV. Its full-size platform provides substantially more room for passengers, luggage, and towing hardware. It is the appropriate choice for families hauling a large trailer, carrying bulky equipment, or taking long trips with all three rows occupied.
Car and Driver gives the Tahoe a 10/10 rating and highlights its passenger capacity, towing ability, and available off-road capability. Engine choices, including available V8 and diesel power, allow buyers to prioritize towing strength or long-distance efficiency, though neither makes the Tahoe inexpensive to operate compared with a hybrid midsize SUV.
The trade-offs are substantial. The Tahoe is wide, long, and heavy. Parking garages, narrow driveways, and crowded school pickup lanes can expose its size every day. It also does not appear on the 2025 IIHS Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ winner list. Available driver-assistance features are not a substitute for an IIHS award.
Best fit: Families that actually need full-size space or towing capacity, rather than buyers choosing a large SUV mainly for appearance.
6. 2025 Ford Expedition: best for maximum family hauling
The Expedition is the other full-size option for families who need serious interior volume and towing capability. Its three rows are designed for adults more convincingly than those in most midsize SUVs, and its larger cargo area remains useful when the rear seats are in place.

Equipment, powertrain details, driver-assistance technology, and safety information should not be generalized from older Expeditions. A dealer listing that says “Expedition” is not enough to establish which features the vehicle includes.
As with the Tahoe, buyers need to account for the ownership compromises: a large turning circle, difficult parking, higher fuel costs than a hybrid SUV, and a purchase price that can rise quickly with options. The Expedition makes sense when its capacity will be used regularly.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the right 2025 three-row SUV
Start with the third row, not the exterior
Take the people who will use the SUV to the test drive. Install the family’s child seats, sit in the third row, and check whether there is enough room behind it for the stroller, groceries, or luggage. A vehicle can technically seat seven or eight people and still be impractical for seven or eight people.
Separate passenger capacity from cargo capacity
Midsize SUVs such as the Pilot, Telluride, Palisade, and Grand Highlander are easier to maneuver and generally less expensive than full-size models. The Tahoe and Expedition provide a more convincing combination of adult-sized seating and cargo space, but their size and fuel consumption are much greater.
Compare safety records by model year
IIHS awards are specific to the model year and can sometimes depend on the vehicle’s build date. For example, IIHS specifies build-date limits for some awards, including the 2026 Kia Sportage, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Kia Sorento. That illustrates why a dealer’s generic “five-star safety” claim needs checking.
A five-star NHTSA rating and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award are separate achievements from separate organizations. Look up the exact year, body style, and powertrain where relevant before treating either result as a buying advantage.
Match the drivetrain to the job
- Mostly commuting: Consider the Grand Highlander Hybrid or another efficient powertrain before defaulting to a large V8 SUV.
- Frequent towing: Compare the vehicle’s tow rating, hitch equipment, payload rating, and trailer-brake requirements—not just engine horsepower.
- Long highway trips: Prioritize seat comfort, third-row ventilation, cargo room, and driver-assistance behavior.
- Urban driving: A Pilot, Telluride, Palisade, or Grand Highlander will usually be easier to place and park than a Tahoe or Expedition.
What experts are really measuring
Expert rankings are not based on third-row seat count alone. Car and Driver says its family-SUV evaluations consider roughly 200 data points, including acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, efficiency, value, and driving enjoyment. That explains why a smaller SUV can rank ahead of a larger one: the best family vehicle depends on how many people travel, what they carry, and how the vehicle is driven.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor most families, the Telluride, Pilot, Grand Highlander, and Palisade are the strongest starting points. FAQ
Which 2025 three-row SUV is the best overall?
The 2025 Kia Telluride is the strongest all-around value for many families because it combines a useful cabin, comfortable ride, standard features, and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award for the 2025 model. The Honda Pilot is a similarly sensible alternative with a more conventional Honda layout.
Which 2025 three-row SUV has the most usable third row?
The Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition offer the most convincing adult-friendly third rows and retain useful cargo room behind them. Among midsize SUVs, the Toyota Grand Highlander is notably more practical than the regular Toyota Highlander.
Is the 2025 Honda Pilot an IIHS Top Safety Pick+?
No. The 2025–2026 Honda Pilot has an IIHS Top Safety Pick designation under the current criteria, not Top Safety Pick+. Those awards are different, so the Pilot should not be advertised as a Top Safety Pick+.

Should I buy a Tahoe or a midsize three-row SUV?
Choose the Tahoe if you regularly need full-size passenger space, substantial cargo capacity, or serious towing ability. A midsize SUV is usually easier to park, less expensive to run, and sufficient if the third row is mainly for children or occasional passengers.
The Bottom Line
The 2025 Kia Telluride is the best starting point for most families, while the Honda Pilot is the safest-feeling all-rounder in terms of everyday usability. Choose the Toyota Grand Highlander when third-row and cargo space matter most in a midsize SUV. The Tahoe and Expedition are better tools for full-size hauling and towing, but their size and running costs only make sense when you will use that extra capacity.
Before buying, verify the exact vehicle’s model-year safety results, build date where relevant, seating configuration, child-seat fit, and cargo space with all three rows in use.
