These entries are not all the same model year or rating type. Toyota’s comparison page mixes model years and uses estimated figures, so use the window sticker and current EPA listing for the exact trim you are considering.

Why the Prius is still the efficiency control

Where it can beat a Prius

RAV4 Hybrid: pay more for utility

Toyota positions RAV4 Hybrid as the utility-oriented choice. Fuel economy can fall short of the window-sticker estimate in real traffic. Edmunds testing, reported by the Associated Press in 2025, recorded 35 mpg on a mixed-driving route for a 2025 RAV4 Hybrid versus its 39 mpg EPA estimate. That is one test route, not a universal result; weather, speed, temperature, tires, payload and driving style all affect consumption.

When the premium makes sense
- Pick RAV4 Hybrid if you need a more utility-focused crossover and are willing to spend more than the cited Corolla Cross entry price.

Choose this branch if you want a conventional midsize-sedan driving position and trunk-oriented design rather than a hatchback or crossover. Obtain the exact local trim’s EPA ratings and equipment before comparing it with Prius or Corolla Cross.

Toyota describes Prius Plug-in Hybrid as offering up to 52 combined mpg and 44 miles of EPA-estimated all-electric range. Those figures describe a vehicle that can be charged and driven electrically; they should not be compared directly with a conventional hybrid’s mpg as though both use the same test metric.
- Choose the plug-in if you can charge at home or work and many daily trips fit within its electric range.
- Choose the conventional Prius if you do not want charging as part of ownership and your priority is maximum hybrid fuel economy.
- Check your electricity and gasoline patterns: after the battery’s usable charge is depleted, the plug-in operates as a hybrid, while actual results depend on temperature, speed and charging frequency.
Which Toyota hybrid should you buy in 2026?
- Start with body style. Select Prius or Camry if you want a sedan-like profile; select Corolla Cross or RAV4 if crossover access and cargo flexibility are more important.
