Toyota Highlander vs. Honda Pilot (2026): Which Three-Row SUV Fits Your Needs?

The Highlander stands out for its available hybrid and 35 mpg manufacturer estimate; the Pilot offers more published third-row legroom, cargo capacity and AWD towing capability. Here is how to match each SUV to your family’s needs.

Choose the 2026 Toyota Highlander if a hybrid powertrain and lower published fuel-consumption rating matter most. Toyota estimates 35 mpg combined for the Highlander Hybrid, compared with 24 mpg combined for its gas model. Choose the 2026 Honda Pilot if your priorities are a roomier published third row, greater listed cargo capacity, a removable second-row center seat on applicable trims, or a higher published towing ceiling with all-wheel drive. The right answer depends on the exact trim, drivetrain and seat configuration—not on a universal winner.

This is a U.S.-market comparison of 2026 model-year vehicles. Toyota’s announcement is dated September 5, 2025, and says 2026 Highlanders were expected at U.S. dealers in November 2025. Prices and equipment can change, so confirm the window sticker and local build-and-price result before signing.

2026 Highlander vs. Pilot: the decision in one minute

  • Best for fuel economy and hybrid availability: Toyota Highlander Hybrid, with Toyota’s manufacturer-estimated 35 mpg combined rating.
  • Best for published third-row legroom: Honda Pilot, at 32.5 inches versus 28.0 inches listed for the Highlander.
  • Best for maximum listed cargo volume: Honda Pilot, with trim-dependent figures from 111.8 to 113.7 cubic feet, compared with Toyota’s 84.3-cubic-foot maximum for the Highlander.
  • Best for towing among the cited ratings: Pilot AWD, listed at up to 5,000 pounds. Pilot 2WD is listed at 3,500 pounds, while Toyota’s cited 2026 release specifies up to 3,500 pounds for the Highlander Hybrid.
  • Best for an eight-passenger possibility: either SUV, but only when equipped with the appropriate second-row bench. Several Highlander grades use captain’s chairs, and Pilot seating varies by trim.

These are manufacturer specifications and estimates, not independent fuel-economy tests, ride evaluations or reliability studies. A family should test the actual vehicle, install its child seats and verify the towing limits for the exact vehicle identification number.

The figures are not all measured under identical conditions. In particular, Honda’s official competitor table compares the 2026 Pilot with a 2025 Highlander, while Toyota’s 2026 announcement separately states an 84.3-cubic-foot maximum. Treat the cargo numbers as manufacturer-published reference points, not as a perfectly matched 2026-versus-2026 test.

Powertrains and fuel economy

Highlander: the only hybrid choice in this comparison

The Highlander offers a 2.4-liter turbocharged gas engine or a 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain. Toyota Motor North America’s September 5, 2025 announcement gives manufacturer-estimated combined ratings of 24 mpg for gas models and 35 mpg for hybrid models. Those numbers are EPA-style manufacturer estimates supplied by Toyota; they are not independent real-world measurements, and traffic, weather, speed, load and tire pressure can change actual consumption.

Toyota’s announcement describes all-wheel drive as standard for the 2026 Highlander lineup. Confirm the drivetrain and equipment on the exact trim because towing, curb weight and final window-sticker data are vehicle-specific. If your daily driving includes a high proportion of city miles, the hybrid’s published advantage is the clearest reason to select the Highlander.

Pilot: one V6, with drivetrain-dependent economy

Every 2026 Pilot uses a 3.5-liter V6 rated at 285 horsepower. Honda lists 22 mpg combined for 2WD versions and 20–21 mpg combined for AWD versions, with the exact AWD rating depending on trim. Honda’s comparison material also identifies a 10-speed automatic transmission as a Pilot advantage over the 2025 Highlander competitor shown on that page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Pilot’s V6 approach is straightforward: there is no hybrid option in the cited 2026 specifications. Selecting 2WD produces the best listed Pilot economy, while AWD brings the lower 20–21 mpg ratings and the higher published towing ceiling. Compare the drivetrain you would actually buy rather than matching the Highlander Hybrid against a lower-priced Pilot 2WD and treating the result as a like-for-like fuel-cost test.

What the ratings mean for ownership

  • For a driver covering 15,000 miles annually, the published 35-mpg Highlander Hybrid rating implies fewer gallons on paper than either Pilot rating. Your actual result depends on use and conditions.
  • A Highlander gas model’s 24 mpg estimate is closer to the Pilot’s 22 mpg 2WD figure than to the hybrid’s 35 mpg figure.
  • AWD can be worth the traction and towing capability, but its additional weight and hardware are reflected in the Pilot’s lower listed economy range.
  • Fuel savings alone do not establish the lower total cost of ownership; purchase price, insurance, maintenance, fuel prices and resale value also matter and vary by buyer and location.

Seating, second-row flexibility and third-row room

How many people can each SUV carry?

Both vehicles can be configured for as many as eight occupants, but capacity is not identical across every grade. Highlander versions with second-row captain’s chairs seat seven. Specified Highlander grades with a second-row bench can seat eight. Check the trim’s seating diagram rather than assuming that every Highlander has the same layout.

Honda lists seven- or eight-passenger Pilot configurations by trim. On applicable versions, the second-row center seat is removable. Removing it creates captain’s-chair-like access while retaining the option to reinstall the center position when you need the extra seat. That is a practical advantage for families who alternate between passenger flexibility and easier third-row entry.

Third-row legroom: Pilot has the larger published number

Toyota’s 2026 dimensions page lists 28.0 inches of Highlander third-row legroom. Honda lists 32.5 inches for the Pilot, a 4.5-inch published difference. The Pilot therefore has the stronger specification for adults or older children who regularly use the back row.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Legroom is only one dimension. Seat height, cushion angle, second-row travel, door opening and the space needed for child restraints affect perceived comfort. Before buying, place the tallest regular passenger in the third row, adjust the second row for a normal front passenger and check whether knees, feet and head have adequate room. A measurement does not guarantee comfort for every body type.

Access and daily family use

Compare how each vehicle reaches the third row with your child seats installed. A removable Pilot center seat can simplify the choice between a pass-through and a full second-row bench, but the exact mechanism and trim equipment should be demonstrated at the dealership. Highlander captain’s chairs can provide a clear aisle, while a bench-seat version preserves an additional seating position. The best arrangement depends on whether you carry three children, several adults, sports equipment or a mixture of all three.

Cargo capacity: useful numbers, imperfect apples-to-apples comparison

Highlander cargo figures

Toyota’s 2026 announcement states up to 84.3 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded. That is the maximum cited figure for the Highlander. The usable floor length and the space available with passengers aboard are smaller questions that the maximum does not answer, so measure the items you actually carry.

Pilot cargo figures

Honda lists 18.6 cubic feet behind the Pilot’s third row and trim-dependent maximum cargo capacities from 111.8 to 113.7 cubic feet behind the first row. The maximum varies by trim, so use the figure for the specific grade under consideration.

Honda’s competitor page places 111.8 cubic feet beside 84.3 cubic feet for a 2025 Highlander. Because that table uses a previous Highlander model year and may use different seat-position or measurement conventions, it should not be presented as a controlled 2026-versus-2026 cargo test. Toyota independently states 84.3 cubic feet for the 2026 model, but the two manufacturers’ published maximums still deserve a configuration label when quoted.

Choose cargo space by the way you load

  • Three-row travel: compare the space behind the third row, where Honda publishes 18.6 cubic feet. Toyota’s cited material does not provide a directly comparable behind-third-row figure.
  • Occasional third-row use: fold the rear seats and test a stroller, cooler or musical instrument in the exact position you use.
  • Large flat loads: ask whether the second-row seats fold level and whether headrests or seat belts obstruct the floor. Maximum volume does not describe floor shape.
  • Eight-passenger families: bring all required child seats. A bench may increase seating but can change the width available for cargo beside those seats.

Towing and payload: match the rating to the exact drivetrain

Pilot towing ratings

Honda’s 2026 specifications list up to 5,000 pounds for AWD Pilot trims and 3,500 pounds for 2WD. The 5,000-pound figure is the higher published ceiling among the ratings cited here, but it does not mean every AWD Pilot can tow that amount in every configuration. Trailer equipment, passengers, cargo, tongue weight, payload and the owner’s manual limits still apply.

Highlander towing ratings

Toyota’s cited 2026 release specifies up to 3,500 pounds for the Highlander Hybrid. The available material does not establish a single towing figure for every gas or hybrid trim, so do not transfer the hybrid number to an unverified configuration. Obtain the exact rating from the vehicle’s certification label, owner’s manual and factory equipment list.

A safe comparison method

  1. Write down the trailer’s loaded weight, not its empty shipping weight.
  2. Confirm the SUV’s maximum trailer rating, tongue-weight limit, payload and gross combined weight rating for the exact drivetrain and trim.
  3. Subtract passengers, luggage, accessories and trailer tongue weight from the SUV’s payload rating.
  4. Verify that the required hitch, wiring, cooling equipment and trailer-brake requirements are installed as specified by the manufacturer.
  5. Leave a safety margin instead of towing at the published maximum on every trip.

Pricing, trims and equipment

What the published prices do—and do not—tell you

Toyota’s September 2025 launch announcement listed $45,270 for a gas Highlander XLE and $47,020 for a hybrid XLE, excluding dealer processing and handling. Toyota’s live specification display showed a different gas XLE price, so those launch figures should be treated as dated announcements rather than guaranteed current transaction prices.

Honda’s live 2026 page lists the Pilot Sport from $42,395 and the Black Edition from $55,195, with intermediate trims between them. The cited information does not provide every intermediate MSRP. These are starting MSRPs, not necessarily the price of a vehicle with AWD, an optional package, destination charges, taxes, registration or dealer-installed accessories.

Do not call either SUV the value winner from base MSRP alone. Compare equivalent drivetrains, seating layouts, safety equipment, infotainment, towing hardware, destination charges and dealer fees on quotes dated close together. Toyota also notes that its specification information applies to mainland U.S. vehicles and may differ by region.

Infotainment, safety and everyday technology

Toyota’s 2026 announcement lists an 8-inch standard or available 12.3-inch touchscreen and Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+. Exact screen size and included features depend on trim, so confirm the equipment list for the vehicle you are pricing.

Honda’s comparison page lists Google built-in and the Pilot’s 10-speed automatic among its advantages against the 2025 Highlander shown in that table. Because that competitor page is not a model-year-matched 2026 Highlander specification sheet, do not assume every listed difference applies unchanged to every 2026 Highlander trim. Ask the salesperson to demonstrate navigation, phone pairing, voice controls, rear-seat connectivity and driver-assistance settings in the exact vehicle.

Which SUV should you choose?

Choose the Highlander when these priorities lead

  • You want a published hybrid option rather than a V6-only lineup.
  • Your main running-cost goal is fuel economy, and Toyota’s 35 mpg combined hybrid estimate fits your expectations.
  • You prefer a seven-seat captain’s-chair layout or can accept the Highlander’s more limited published third-row legroom.
  • Your trailer is within the confirmed rating of the specific Highlander you will buy, including the 3,500-pound maximum cited for the Hybrid.
  • You have compared the final hybrid price with a similarly equipped Pilot, rather than assuming the lower fuel rating automatically offsets any purchase-price difference.

Choose the Pilot when these priorities lead

  • Adults or larger children will use the third row frequently and the 32.5-inch published legroom is useful to your family.
  • You need the larger published maximum cargo range or 18.6 cubic feet behind the third row.
  • You value a removable second-row center seat on an applicable trim.
  • You need the Pilot’s published 5,000-pound AWD towing ceiling and have confirmed that your chosen vehicle is equipped and rated for your trailer.
  • You prefer a V6 powertrain and are comfortable with the listed 22 mpg 2WD or 20–21 mpg AWD combined ratings.

A practical buying and test-fit checklist

  1. Choose the drivetrain first. Decide whether you need hybrid efficiency, 2WD economy, AWD traction or a particular towing rating. This prevents an unfair comparison between unrelated trims.
  2. Confirm seating capacity on the window sticker. Look for the second-row bench if you require eight seats, or verify captain’s chairs if aisle access matters more.
  3. Test the third row with real passengers. Put the tallest regular passenger in back, set the front seat for a normal driver, and check entry and exit.
  4. Bring your largest items. Measure a stroller, cooler, instrument case, sports bag or pet crate. Check the vehicle with the third row in use and folded.
  5. Install child seats. Check anchor access, buckle reach, second-row slide function and whether a rear-facing seat blocks the front passenger.
  6. Read the towing documentation. Match trailer weight, tongue weight, payload and required equipment to the exact trim and drivetrain.
  7. Build comparable quotes. Include destination, dealer fees, options, taxes, registration and accessories. Use prices retrieved on similar dates.
  8. Confirm regional details. Toyota says its specifications apply to mainland U.S. vehicles; local availability and equipment can differ.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Using the Pilot’s competitor table as a 2026-versus-2026 test: Honda compares the 2026 Pilot with a 2025 Highlander in that table.
  • Treating maximum cargo as everyday cargo: maximum volume requires folding rows and does not show the space left for passengers.
  • Assuming every Highlander seats eight: captain’s chairs produce a seven-seat layout; bench seating is grade-specific.
  • Applying the 5,000-pound Pilot rating to every Pilot: Honda lists 5,000 pounds for AWD and 3,500 pounds for 2WD.
  • Applying the Highlander Hybrid rating to every Highlander: Toyota’s cited release specifies 3,500 pounds for the Hybrid; verify other configurations separately.
  • Calling an estimate a test result: the 24 and 35 mpg Highlander figures and the Pilot’s 20–22 mpg figures are manufacturer-listed ratings, not independent road-test results.
  • Comparing a launch MSRP with a current quote: Toyota’s announcement and live display differed for the gas XLE, and dealer pricing changes over time.
  • Assuming specification equals comfort or reliability: the cited material contains manufacturer dimensions and equipment, not independent ride impressions or reliability evidence.

Bottom line

The Highlander is the more logical pick for a buyer who specifically wants a hybrid and places fuel economy first. The Pilot is the stronger fit when third-row legroom, cargo flexibility, a removable second-row center seat or AWD towing capacity matter more. Neither conclusion applies to every trim: verify the seat layout, drivetrain, cargo configuration, towing documentation and current local price on the exact SUV you plan to purchase.
